For this video, I am out in Thorpeness in Suffolk, England for a beach wild camp. I had been there before with Tom from Tom Outdoors so was familiar with the area.
When I left London, it was 36.5 degrees celsius! This was officially the hottest day of the year and the hottest July day on record, so I was very glad to be leaving London for the cool of the coast! It was worth the three-hour drive to the coast just for the air con in my car!
The Suffolk coast was forecasted for some isolated thunderstorms so I was careful to avoid this and was ready to do abandon camp - if necessary…

Cool video, adapt and overcome sometimes on wildcamps, if your going to shelter from a mad thunderstorm, a pillbox has to be the place, literally bombproof, stunning shots of the storm, good health and safe travels my friend, cheers craig

I live on the Northumberland coast, where we have plenty of these old pill boxes. I've often thought that they would be great for wild camping.

Great video. I remember that night. In London we got very little. The lightning was pink. We had one particularly bright flash and loud bang at about 4 in the morning. I went downstairs. Ive been caught out 1200ft above sea level back in 94 at Rivington Pike. Some people were STILL heading to the summit with fork lightning hitting down. Luckily the car was not too far away but i ran. That was one of the biggest days in 94. Think the UK suffered its most lightning strikes

If you're cold set the tent up inside the bunker.
Good idea. The only problem with that for me was my tent wasn’t a freestanding one and so it would have been a pretty tricky pitch.
one of the mornings it feels fine to leave the campsite :), and i agree it was a smart move to stay

It's refreshing to watch a Wild Camping video that's so unlike the so called 'norm' now a days, even if it was as a result of your discomfort. I have been in the exact situation, a storm rolling out of nowhere at the end of a very hot day, when it had not been predicted. Sadly I was on top of Kinder Scout, on Edale Moor, under a DD tarp with two petrified dogs. I had to sit it out and just hope, very scary because it's all down to luck in the end. Like you say you can't be standing, walking back to the car, you would have been a perfect target. Maybe this is a start of a new aspect of Wild Camping, we have had drone footage, GoPro video under water, the what's in my pack load out vids. Now its the 'Blair Witch' Pill box Camping with piss stains, broken bottles and scary graffiti ha ha. Made very good viewing though. Atb Bill.

I remember this night, I had planned to go to the woods camping, and i am so glad I bailed out, the storm. Was very bad in South Wales and I was terrified just watching through my window, where I would have camped didn't have any safe buildings or shelters for at least 3 miles either

I was gonna kip in a WWII German bunker a few weeks ago, but it was full of soil and very dusty, didn't fancy breathing that all night, so unfortunately gave it a miss.

Great adventure. My evening was spent in a luxury campsite in a six man tent in Wareham nice and warm with the family. We had the rain but very little storms. ATB. Graham

Hi Ben sorry it's taken me a while to get round to commenting.. I've tried to do a fair bit of research on this building but there's really very little to be found neither on the internet or in the many local ww2 books have.. So I'm going to have to make an educated guess on this one I'm afraid.. Judging by the shape of the windows I'd say it's not a pillbox though, a the interior doesn't have any of the usual things found in pillboxes, plus the common choice of pillbox along the coast here was the 'Suffolk Square' which this is definitely not, so i would agree with a few of the other comments which say it's likely a look-out. I have however found out that there was a ww2 gun battery of some type built very close by here so it could have originally been part if that.. Sorry I couldn't be more help but thanks for the mention in the video. Emma 🙂

From my experience places like that pill box are normally full of poo and used needles. l would sooner have run for the car.

As much as it rains in England and you're scared of a thunderstorm?
We get some rain England but storms like this are rare. In any storm - that involves lightning - anywhere, it's sensible to be safe. And so in answer to your question, yes I was a bit scared with lighting striking very near to me.
@@benhikescamps Well yeah better safe than sorry. Living in the American southern states I guess I'm just so accustomed to them and the tornado's.
