My ANA Flights - Economy Middle Seat to Widest Business Suite

- I want to visit my mom in the U.S. but all the flights have been packed. Last minute, I found a seat on ANA. The first flight from HK to Tokyo is in Economy Class.
There’s nothing wrong with flying economy class, but once you tried premium class, it is hard to sit back here….I made a mistake by forgetting to do online check-in and it was a full flight, so this time it was my turn to sit in the middle seat!
I dozed off a bit during the takeoff. Flight attendants came back for full meal service, and they handed out a menu card with meal pictures for passengers to choose their choice of either ginger pork or chicken. The main course came in a paper container, drinks in paper cups and napkins made of green tea leaves…ANA is going green.
We landed at Tokyo Haneda Airport on time in the evening and the terminal was very busy. I proceeded to the ANA lounge and it was crazy crowded. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the food in the lounge.
My next flight to San Francisco is on ANA B777-300/ER. This flight features their new Business Class Suite called “The Room” which is the widest Business Class seat out there. The bed is not quite long enough for my height so I settle with a diagonal position which I can stretch fully. ANA provided some good amenities such as latex pillow and mattress for a good sleep in Business Class. Since it was a red-eye flight, the food option was limited.
You really should fly more economy class so we see what actual flight experiences look like. Luxury classes are interesting but unaffordable for most people. This video was quite informative, thank you!
I agree his flying in economy class makes for interesting videos, nonetheless, in my humble opinion, if he has the financial means to fly in a more premium class, he should definitely not limit himself to economy!
@@wstrat3623 I agree wst... but if the videos are all first class, I will only watch if they intrigue me. If I had the funds, I would fly premium. But as Gabor stated, most folk don't have the money. I've flown enough coach for my lifetime, but those premium prices!
There's a lot of channels that showcase economy seats. Sam's has generally been to showcase the best that an airline offers and that's OK. Someone's gotta do it.
@@Lucky8s You are right Lucky8s. "Someone's gotta do it". I watch Sam because he is funny, charismatic, and clearly the crews seems to like him very much. I suspect that he treats those around him really well. But I think the odd coach video is a great "offset". Also, I note that I do not subscribe to any of those coach channels. Brings back too many bad memories :)
@@roderickcampbell2105 Totally, I think he captures the individual (passengers, pilots, flight attendants, staff at the airport and on the ground) and their personalities in a way that no other aviation blogger does (such as VV, Alex Praglowski, Simply Flying, etc.)
Unfortunately economy is how over 90% of us fly.
Although a struggle it's a good thing we can all travel again

That's how most people travel. Too many travel vloggers do nothing but travel in business or first, which is of a lot less interest to many viewers who want to know what different airlines are like in economy, for when they make their own travel decisions.
I want to watch business and first class stuff, but it is refreshing to see something different. That’s the key with these vloggers, variety. Even guys like simply aviation who feature mainly economy, I get excited when they post a premium cabin review.
I hear this comment very often. From a content creator's point of view, Premium class has way more features and offers more privacy to create video without disturbing passengers. My channel would be sharing my own travel experience, like I said, once you tried Premium class, it is hard to go back to Economy. You spend all days figuring out the best way to fly in comfort on your next trip.
@@SamChuiI was thinking that was the case. For the sake of production, economy would be harder to do. Still, seeing it once in a while for contrast isn't bad!
@@SamChui Except 90% of fliers fly economy and want to know what airlines offer them in economy. Not jollies for vloggers who basically use YT money and airmiles to swan around the globe.
And this is not aimed at you, but those travel vloggers who do nothing but fly around in business and first class.
@@QuicknStraight well if you can go through Sam's Vidoes you will realise that most of his most viewed involve those luxury classes.
Most watch because they cannot experience those luxury classes themselves, so it's great to come along with Sam and have a "share " of the experience.
I agree 90% fly coach , but what's so interesting about economy to make a 20min video about it? . It sucks , that's it.
Anyway there are plenty of economy reviews out there , they still don't get as many views as Sam , to show you how much less interesting economy reviews are.
I would rather watch a video of something I don't experience on a regular bases or have not experienced before.

You are right about flights being full. This is the first summer that the Asian countries are fully open. You have people rushing home to see their family after 3 years of lockdown and people from Asia side that rush to get out of the country. A perfect storm, in a way. As an airline staff traveler, it is not a day pass that we don't read about staff getting stuck in Japan for several days and not being able to get a seat out of Japan.
You’re 💯 right. I was stuck in Japan and was forced to fly to Sydney to connect back to the USA.
yes every flight is full in the summer, and very expensive. Everyone is going on vacation as this is the first summer fully opened for travel after 3 years of covid restrictions. I recently flew to Japan in August, the price was at least 50% pricier than pre-covid.
You should fly on the unique ANA jets Sam, I just went from HND to LAX a month ago on the unique ANA green jet. I boarded into a rainforest, cool green seats and a unique menu with a nature based sountrack.
It was so special and awesome even in economy

Also it was the one 787 flight I slept 7 hours straight in economy so that was a bonus, it was pretty awesome and good looking jet JA871A. Also I was at the Haneda ANA lounge at 8pm and in mid July ans it was packed like your video because you have access to that Lounge if you pay 30 USD

Lounges everywhere are out of control. The Schipol KLM lounge was absolutely packed the last time I was there. That lounge is massive.

I noticed many people saying you should fly economy more often because most of us can only afford economy. Well I say keep flying business and first class as much as possible. Majority of us subscribed to your channel in order to experience the luxury of flying first and business through your experiences. If I wanted economy, I would subscribe to a channel that focuses on that so Sam keep up the great work and fantastic videos.

You’ve mentioned the efficiency of boarding. In my opinion, the passenger profile plays a huge factor in this. Japanese people are mostly light travellers - who normally brings one small handbags. Which makes the boarding so quick, without these unnecessary overhead bin dramas.😂

I was so disappointed on my first Dreamliner flights - there was simply no room for long legs, or turning around to sleep. So now I fly Premium Economy (United), and the extra room is worth every cent.
That's what I try to do as much as I can, so I flew Premium Economy 3 months ago. Comfort is definitely a thing when you have to fly 12 hours in a row.
The Narita ANA lounge was a nightmare...just like a shopping mall food court.Same condition on my visit on 2016
I had the most horrible experience checking in ANA from Narita on New Year’s day and I’ve been to Japan many times. The check in procedure was an absolute nightmare and I was thinking of booking the ANA lounge and luckily I didn’t cos there wasn’t time left after the horrid check-in. I will not fly ANA agin unless really necessary

I am glad Sam gave real review of flight by sitting in economy cabin like most of us. To be honest, reviews of business class is kind of meaningless because vast majority of passengers can't afford business cabin.

Never thought I’d see Sam in the sandwich seat. I had to do it from Tokyo to San Francisco bac in February it sucked I had no choice.
Had very similar itinerary as you! But was PEK-HND-LAX. Haneda lounge is crazy, struggle to find a seat at peak hours, you need to somehow find your way into the suite lounge for a better experience. Lucky me, I was in business with no one next to me from PEK-HND and the whole business class was like half full. But unfortunately HND-LAX does not have 777-300er so had to settle with 787-9, still decent with good privacy. I experienced the room from SFO-HND, it was truly amazing. You should try their "the suite" sometimes!

Another great review. Thank you, Sam! I flew NH860 in Y last week. As an ANA fanboy, I have to say it was a bit of a letdown in all aspects. Not sure if it was a cost-cutting issue. My next leg to America was great though (as usual).
For trans-Pacific flights in Y, KAL is actually quite competitive: Great food options (always have the bibimbap option as an insurance policy, particularly when flying from America...), generous amenity kit (sleepers and toothbrush in Y!!!!!!), and slightly cheaper than ANA.
With that said, ANA is still my first choice: Japanese hospitality, Star Alliance, and most importantly (as Sam mentioned), the maximized (carefully timed?) sleep time. Only ANA can give me that no-jetlag trans-Pacific experience.
ana's food quality is definitely a letdown, especially because it was much better before.

Nice to see you fly like most of us do 😂 I flew ANA economy twice last year and loved it. So clean and great service. Food was good too. It was a stark contrast to United that I flew to Tokyo.

ANA is pretty decent economy with 33-34 inches of pitch. Premium Economy is ahhhhhh. But, PE is usually 2x

In the mid 90s, when ANA started route from Washington, D.C. to Tokyo (then Bangkok), they used to serve steak and sushi in economy class. It was quite good. Those days are gone but the cold soba noodles with sauce was served then and now as well.

From the first time i flown onboard an airplane when i was little with my family to the last time in July 2018, me and family always flew in the economy class and IMO (In My Opinion) i think none of those airlines in Indonesia (Yes you may remember me as an Indonesian Avgeek) have the worse seat but i think that is about to change when me and my family traveled onboard on airplane again in the near future. Anyway, good video, Sir. As always.
I really like the HUD on approach to landing. Not sure many airlines offer that on the multimedia screen.

It is the same lounge but with different timing, the result can be quite surprising. I was personally shocked to see it was that busy in the evening.

I was on that flight to SFO in April. There's no meal after takeoff. It's only the snack menu, which is still pretty good. I thought there was a meal, so I didn't eat in the lounge. Thank goodness for the snacks.
ANA economy JFK to Haneda is the worst I have seen ever. 3-4-3 seat configuration. I sat in the middle seat in exit row (female, 5-7, 140), and the seat is so narrow that I couldn’t fit anything else (like my purse). The plane has mostly business class 2/3, one small section of economy plus, and one section of economy in the back. Plane was almost full both going and coming. Just painful and inhumane. I think the seats were even narrower than US domestic flights. Service was very good which is the saving grace. Ironically, the Haneda to Beijing flight was much more spacious, because ANA hadn’t gotten around to upgrade! The JFK route was brand new but they managed to squeeze out an extra seat per row in economy! Website was difficult to use and I had to wait for an average of one hour every time I wanted to reach customer service. However, once I got thru, the agents were extremely helpful. But they also acknowledged that no one can get thru because of staff shortage. That’s the case even in China which is unusual. Also I met an extremely incompetent ground ticketing staff trying to make changes-she didn’t know what to do but wouldn’t admit it. It took another staff member quite a bit of courage to hover around and eventually took over so I didn’t miss my flight! I heard JAL economy is much more comfortable. Won’t fly ANA again

Depends on time of day at NRT for the numbers in the lounge...when I fly out, the lounge is mostly empty.
I thought I was flying "The Room" last month from LAX-HND, but when checking in found out it was SFO-HND (ONLY) that offers "The Room" from the West Coast...ugh. Will eventually get to fly in "The Room".

I’m 6 feet and flew middle seat economy from bkk to Kix with Thai and was ok for the 6 hour flight. Normally I’m in premium economy or business but satisfied with it
Im fine with economy, its great for frugal travelers. Less spent on getting to your destination means more can be spent AT your destination. Each to their own. I would like to try the premium class at least once and call it a day.

ANA opened newest international gate in terminal 2 in Tokyo/Haneda airport.
Only few flight use this terminal, but their are huge capacity for passengers using lounge.

Both companies I have worked for that if they booked my trip on business I end up in a middle seat on the flight in coach. Hated it! It was always a cost savings excuse with both companies. I refuse to travel on the company nickel! Lol!
