I've heard stuff about stature and rod length, for fishing surface irons. I'm about 5'9 and I'm wondering if I should go with a 8 or 9 ft jigstick. I've heard depending on ur stature u cn cast a shorter rod better than a longer one
The only true way to know is to try casting multiple sizes. I found I can cast farthest with a 10' rod, but I can cast all day with a 9 footer. You can fight fish easiest with an 8' rod, but you will have to cast the hardest to get your iron into the zone. Decisions decisions... heh ;)
Will Leon The rod is a PENN Bluwater Carnage model: CARBW800XL 7'10" 10-25 LB MONO / 20-50 LB BRAID, Deckhand grip.I used a DAIWA reel clamp, which comes in a couple of different sizes. I had to use the smaller size, as the deckhand grip of the PENN rod has a small diameter. Here's the link:www.daiwa.com/images/fishing_tools_3.jpg www.daiwa.com/Accessory/fishing_tools.aspxTight lines Bro!
Andrew Kloster Awesome, thank you... Been looking for a rod clamp for my Lexa's but can only find the Tiburon brand that "may" fit the Lexa... Been looking at those Penn rods for a bit too... Right now I have my 2 Lexa's on a Shimano Tallus and a Terez.
Will Leon The Tallus and Terez are both pretty rad, and conveniently come with reel seats :) The Daiwa reel clamp isn't cheap, but it's effective, and looks sweet.
Hey Andrew im looking to book a couple trips for this year out of SD im from Dana Point. Witch boat and when do you think it would be a good time to get some yellows.
+Zach Everhart Plenty of Yellow's up on your area! I was looking at going up there for a trip or two, hah. I can't really name specific boats because their itinerary changes with the calendar and fishing conditions. What month(s) are you planning to fish? Right now the 1.5 day boats are doing well in Mex waters at Colnet and surrounding areas. As summer approaches you can get Yellows on the 3/4 day boats that fish the Coronados. I ride the M/V San Diego out of Seaforth Sportfishing a lot in the summer. Ryan Bostian has a great boat and crew. A good crew is super important.
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but spinner or conventional rod? I'd go with the six-six 20-40# conventional on a private boat, and the longer (but heavier) rod on an open party boat. Apologies for the lame answer, it's the best I could do with limited information.
+tommy hong Calstar GFDH 800M (20-50) matched with a Shimano Talica 10II loaded to the top with 65# braid. This setup is used for fly-lining live bait, and dropping Flat Falls and lighter yo-yo irons. Favorite jigs are Salas 6x and 7x Juniors and heavy, PL-68, and full size Flat Falls 160g - 250g.
+InspectaDekz The Lexa 400 was packed with 65# Power Pro Slick 8, with a 25' top shot of 30# PLine Smoke Mono. I don't normally use Fluorocarbon for open water Yellowtail. Slay'em!
+InspectaDekz The rod is rated for 15-25# mono, but because I was throwing surface plugs with it, I upped the top shot for the inevitable back lash (we ALL do it). You just have to keep the line rating in mind when setting your drag. I use an "RP" knot for the connection, and I've never had a problem with the knot ticking through the guides.
+InspectaDekz For smaller surface plugs and jigs the Lexa is fine, and I use it quite often. For larger size irons such as a Salas 7x, or Taddy 45 I use either a Tranx or Trini 20A because they have larger spool diameters and fit better on a 9+ jig stick. In the end, you have to go with what works best for you. In this video I was experimenting with gear, and for the most part the combo of Lexa and 9' Abyss worked out, but ultimately I switched back to a more traditional setup. The combo worked, but was too much effort.
I tend to cast smaller Iron's with the Lexa, with Tady 45 being the biggest. Tady A1, Salas 7X JR, Caivo Landon4x, Tady C, and Tady 45. drive.google.com/open?id=1_W7l99UL1Hj0T_z-2nF4pAojzbsWPJSA
Ya they have both regular and power handle versions. What gear ratio do you like? Komodo has a 7.1:1 and 6.2:1 like the lexa's but I was thinking 7 is a lil high as u don't get the torch wen fighting fish as much
What kind of line are you running on ur Lexa 400? I just got a TranX and I'm not sure what line to put on it. I'm between 65 braid or 30 mono. I like the stretch mono has with the surface and yoyo irons but I love the line capacity the braid has to offer. Thoughts?
Nice, looks like you had a great day!
I've been on the San Diego...nice boat and crew!
Always fun with the M/V San Diego crew :) Tight lines!

Andrew Kloster lol, k thx alot
Hey bro, what model Penn Blue Carnage rod was your Lexa 400 on? Was it with the deckhand grip? If so, what rod clamp did you use?
Awesome catches too, btw...!!!

Well i hope this year is like last..
Do you think a 7' 15-40 lb rod would work for small-medium size yellows or a short heavy 6'6" 20-40 would work? Thanks and tight lines

What kind of talica was on your cousins rod and what kind of hook were you using when you flyline.
Talica 12ii on the Cousins spooled 80 main/40 topshot.
I was flylining Owner 3/0 ringed circle hooks, as the Sardines were pretty big that day.
hey... so what is your favorite set up and your favorite lure, jig

Hey Bro... Really enjoy watching yo?r videos. Got a question for you, what # line did you use on that Penn BWC rod?
+InspectaDekz The Lexa 400 was packed with 65# Power Pro Slick 8, with a 25' top shot of 30# PLine Smoke Mono. I don't normally use Fluorocarbon for open water Yellowtail. Slay'em!
+Andrew Kloster Can the rod handle that 30#? I'm thinking of picking one up?
+InspectaDekz The rod is rated for 15-25# mono, but because I was throwing surface plugs with it, I upped the top shot for the inevitable back lash (we ALL do it). +Andrew Kloster thank you for the info. Really appreciate it. Keep the slayfest going! 🎣
Absolutely!!
How do you like that Lexa reel for surface iron fishing?

yeah....... super jelly at the moment. why am i still deployed lol. been watching a few of your videos so far.
It's like torture not being able to fish!
What month is the best time to go fishing for tuna?
+Casey phraxayavong July/August is always a pretty safe bet.
What model cousins rod was that at the end of the vid? 90j?
Joe
CBJ 80H-CT 8'0" 30-50 LB LINE
I use it mostly as a yo-yo or heavy drop loop rod.
Cool video went out the next day on the San Diego, not as many caught but i managed to get 3.
Matthew Ryan FUN FUN FUN!!! Ryan, Taro and the crew run an outstanding operation! I'll see ya out there!!
Yeah they do, great boat and crew!!!
what setup are you using at 10:00.
Shimano Terez 8' medium heavy rod, Talica 10II reel. 65# braid with short 30# mono top-shot. :)
Nice fishing! Thanks for the video.
olih517 Thank you - the fishing is awesome, you gotta get out there!! :)
What size tadys and salas would u recommend for a lexa 400
I tend to cast smaller Iron's with the Lexa, with Tady 45 being the biggest. Tady A1, Salas 7X JR, Caivo Landon4x, Tady C, and Tady 45.

Andrew Kloster thank you so much for the feedback so quickly.
bro your vids r bad ass!
AI Mega Very much appreciated!! ;-)
What size lexa is that? Hard to tell if it's 300 or 400?
Lexa 400, 65# Power Pro, 30# mono topshot. Fun reel :)
Nice I was looking at that one and okuma Komodo 350 on a shadow stalker for bass and light yellow set up
MrJesus100 Does the Komodo come with a power handle? When the seals show up I find the larger handle is beneficial.
Ya they have both regular and power handle versions. What gear ratio do you like? Komodo has a 7.1:1 and 6.2:1 like the lexa's but I was thinking 7 is a lil high as u don't get the torch wen fighting fish as much
MrJesus100 I prefer the 6.2:1 for the torque. 7.1 might require a lot of rod pumping.
Nice !!
Tight lines
Ogkilla Dabs Thank you, another great trip!!
Isn't the San Diego owned by Ryan?
Correct. Ryan Bostian is the owner and Captain of the SD, but Captain Taro was driving that day :)
What kind of line are you running on ur Lexa 400? I just got a TranX and I'm not sure what line to put on it. I'm between 65 braid or 30 mono. I like the stretch mono has with the surface and yoyo irons but I love the line capacity the braid has to offer. Thoughts?
I'm looking for an all around line for surface irons, yoyo, live bait, plastic swimbaits
And what pound was that red braided line ?
Thomas Rhim - My Lexa is spooled with 65# Maxcuatro braid, with about a 100' top-shot of 40# mono (Izorline).
