  • Massive respect to the incredible Courtney Dauwalter for giving this interview moments after finishing 1st lady in the UTMB (Ultra Tour du Mont Blanc) 2019 at the finish line in Chamonix. An incredible performance after coming back from a hip injury earlier in the year.
Here Courtney shares how she deals with sleep deprivation and gives advice for coping with the inevitable pain that running 171km (106 miles) with 10,000m ascent through the wild mountains around Mont Blanc brings!
    Thank you Courtney!

I wish people would leave her alone straight after a race like this. She's is totally out of it BUT so gracious as well.

exactly my thought, it's so inconsiderate, and no, it's not about getting "tips" for us, those are meaningless questions, it's all about getting views.

Well done for grabbing this interview so close after the end of the race. You can see how delirious Courtney is and how much these races take out of you, especially a winning performance like the one Courtney put in. The fact that she’s still willing to stand around and chat to the media is a testament to the person she is and makes her a true ambassador for this sport. I haven’t run 100 miles yet but if I do I’m sure I’ll be ready to collapse in a heap after crossing the line. What an inspiration she is.

Thank you for posting. I think one of the way to recognise genuine performer is they don't have much tips to give. They know the only way to it is through it.

I am mostly interested in how they got through it. Mostly, I enjoy the blow-by-blow recaps of how their run went vs plan. Few runners are ready to do that at the finish line. Jim Walmsley, Sage Canaday, and a few others are great at it and need little to no prodding by the interviewers. Courtney takes a lot of prodding and never really gets into the details. And I don't care. Her interviews are interesting for different reasons. She was on track to finish 14th overall for a while and still could have finished 18th (top American) had she not coasted in. She is an original, an incredibly tough and determined runner behind an endearingly cheerful personality. Big fan here.

Thanks so much Claire for having that chat. Courtney is pretty amazing - how any of them deal with all that after running such a taxing race is beyond me.
It’s been awesome to see the content from you and I’m looking forward to more as you edit it down!

I followed the race, and Courtney on-line.
She's so great and tuff !
Regarding the "pain cave" I think Courtney is right in "accepting it". It's better than trying to escape from it and using energy changing something that cannot be changed.

Nice! Surprised there is not more content on youtube after that race (maybe some folks are still editing). Crazy comeback from an injury. That crowd as she came in was incredible.

Great interview Claire! I saw where Courtney and the 2nd and 3rd place women were on a podium taking pictures, so she must have waited around for more than an hour after she had finished. I wonder how long it took till she could finally go get some sleep, and did she hang around for many hours after that to meet the other runners as they finished?

Cortney gave her the very polite "THANK YOU" as in "This conversation is now over" thank you and the interviewer just steam rolled right over her. She shouldn't be allowed on the finish line doing this any longer. You are so lucky you got 2-3 questions in. Take the win.....but no. You had to push your luck and get greedy. Hate to see this.

Can't imagine the pain of the person who is funding her to do all of this. Now that's pain. I don't believe there's a lot of money for these ultra runners out there. There never is for solo activities.
