I have a Dewalt, I just keep a small piece of wood on the back of the table I use to hold arm up. I lift arm and use board to prop it up. Works great and its free. I rarely use the whole table so it doesn't interfere.
Great tips Tyler. 👍 When you get older like me you might want to check out the lighted clamp on desk magnification light at Harbor Freight. It’s took me a couple of days to get used to it but the visibility was tremendous. Now I can’t scroll without it.
Please try the flying Dutchman blades. I have used them for years and am partial to them. Love the idea of putting the saw on an angle. Going to try it.
Thanks Mr Pirate! Very helpful video. Lots of great tips. Fascinated especially with your 3D scrolling videos. Your enthusiasm with the hobby is infectious!
I use both a bandsaw with a 1/8 blade and a scroll saw, instead of using a file to round over the back of the blade on both saws . I use a sharpening stone that you can buy at a dollar store . my stones are about 1''wide -3''long -1\2''' thick. for the cost of them , I all ways have a few around . BIG THUMBS UP !!!!!!
Thanks chap. I'm new to scroll saws and just purchased a 2nd hand saw from ebay UK . Its trial and error at the moment , but shocked how time flies . I sit on an oversize gym ball , helps keep my spine neutral , great tips 🇬🇧
Awesome tips & tricks Tyler just started scrolling myself on an old Dremel 16 inch i was Given. I got a foot switch recently it helps alot. Love the inclined saw tip I'll be trying that soon Thank you. I Subbed to your Channel 👍🙂
I'm pretty much set up the same as you. I like that magazine too and hope more people look into it. I sometimes stand and sometimes sit. So I haven't figured out yet the best angle for the saw. Also I never seem to remember to file the back of the blade lol. Your advice is very sound!. I did though add a LED magnifier to my stand. But that's probably not for everyone Question. Have you ever printed or drawn out your patterns in red ink? It shows up beautifully against a black blade. I always design my patterns in red. If you haven't try it. Enjoyed your video. Take care!
Just found your channel. And subscribed ;-) Anyhow I can for second the tip on the foot pedal. I used a Dewalt for 10 yrs without one. Never saw the need in it and thought I wouldn’t like it. Bought a new King scroll saw last year and it came with one. Now I do t know how I ever lived without one lol Keep up the good work
I like the idea of the forward tilt on your saw. It's a little difficult to tell how much of an angle is working for you. It looks to be rather steep, maybe 35 - 40 degrees? I have a great table with my saw mounted to it, maybe I can just figure a way to add some lift to the rear legs. Thank you for your encouragement well done! I am also a Steve Good fan.
I used a digital angle guage and my scroll saw is at roughly 16 degrees, of course it will differ for each person depending on your height as well as your workbench and works tool height, I just kept trying different heights until I found what was comfortable. Sorry for the late reply
Great video; many good tips. Question? where did you find the pattern for the scroll saw man leaning up against the "I turn wood" sign? Thanks for informative video.
My question is and maybe you can help me. I have been having trouble with my blades. The wood I use is a birch 1/2 wood and blade I use is #5 skip reverse tooth. I use a porter-cable scroll saw. When I am cutting my blades breaks and when I stop I see below that the blade is bent over at the bottom and another thing to my blades slide out of the grips even though I tighten them tightly. Blades are expensive and for it to be breaking all the time it’s getting old. Can you tell me what is going on or what wrong? Thank you for your help.
Thanks for reaching out, from what I'm reading it sounds like one of 2 reasons or maybe a combo of both, It does, to me sound like a tension issue and maybe a feed rate issue, take your time and let the blade do the work. also, a scroll saw cuts on the down stroke so, make sure the majority of the teeth are facing down,.
Tyler I've got an old 1987shopcraft 15" scroll saw I can't find any info on it ..it runs great it's painless and the blades I've found seems to be too thin the block will not tighten down on blade...any info would be greatly appreciated..
Hi there Artisan Pirate , Pete Roberts from Halifax Nova Scotia Canada . When a lady asks me if she could use a scroll saw , I ask them can they use a sewing machine . I say they are pretty much the same . I give them a business card a suggest if they have questions , call me . Just one more tip for you to use!!!!
Really great tips AP .Thank you. I have a Porter-Cable scrollsaw and I cannot get pinless blades to stay in. Any thoughts on where to look for help/tips?
@@alfredsmith9727 I have tried that Alfred. Sometimes it just pulls straight out or it will run a couple of minutes then, bang, it comes out. It has been like it since I got it 18 months ago from new. I am looking to see if I can swap the clamp assembly for something different. One of Steve Good's videos showed a good one . I need to find out if it will fit PC.
Have you tried blue painters tape and spray glue i used to use packing tape but on close cuts some times the tape and pattern will tear and then you are in trouble.
Brother, I just got my scroll saw last week and I don't know why I waited so long. This is already a passion of mine, I do have 1 question, as I said, I'm new to scrolling, my wood starts to bounce up and down rapidly and has broken a couple of my projects. My wood is 3/8 to 1/2 inch walnut, birch, and I believe some pine. What hits you if you are troubleshooting jumping up and down? Thanks, man
Glad you love scrolling! Its so relaxing. Sounds like your blade is in wrong. A scroll saw cuts on the down stroke. So, make sure your blades teeth are facing down. I use a reverse tooth blade mostly. So, the last few teeth on those blades face upwards to produce a cleaner cut
I live in Adelaide Australia can anyone recommend a magazine for scrolling I am a complete novice and Santa is bringing me a scroll saw for Christmas merry Christmas everyone

I agree with using the block of wood on the dewalt, however, with me putting my saw on a big angle, it would just always be falling off my table
Totally agree with being comfortable. Thanks for everything.
You are so welcome!
Great tips Tyler. 👍
When you get older like me you might want to check out the lighted clamp on desk magnification light at Harbor Freight.
It’s took me a couple of days to get used to it but the visibility was tremendous. Now I can’t scroll without it.
Thanks Tom !
Please try the flying Dutchman blades. I have used them for years and am partial to them. Love the idea of putting the saw on an angle. Going to try it.
Great suggestion! Never used those blades, Might have to try them, and yes, put the saw on an angle! Makes a world of difference!
Lots of Great tips Tyler. There are lots of great people on FB to help you on your personal journey in scroll sawing. If you have questions, just ask.
2 of my mentors are women scrollers. One started in the 70's and she is still at it. I just bought 6 patterns from her this morning.
Thats awesome Curtis! Major props to them. I'm so happy that females are getting into woodworking as well and teaching others
I have a dust mask handy at all times. The scroll saw makes really fine dust and we don't want to breathe that fine dust in.
I have one as well and wear it
Thank you for the friendly advice and you really encouraged me to get started
Thanks so much for the kind words! If you need any help with anything, please reach out!
Thanks I'm in the UK and and a grandmother. Thanks for your advice

Awesome idea! So sorry for the late reply and I do see the advantage of using the stone instead of a file

Awesome tips do you have a link to the delta scroll saw
The Delta Saw is available from Lowes or Amazon
I was wondering about what angle do you have scroll saw at.

Same for me! Scrolled for years without a pedal and after I got it I was like wow!
I just order spiral scroll saw blades too ! I have not used them before. That is the next thing on my list.🤗🤗🤗
Good Luck !

I hope the would ! Would love to see an Irish Scroller !
Great video; many good tips. Question? where did you find the pattern for the scroll saw man leaning up against the "I turn wood" sign? Thanks for informative video.

Thanks so much!!
You're welcome!

Great tips. Have been looking at scroll saws. A friend has a 15" jet for sale hardly used $100.00. Will see?
Awesome ! It is a fun and relaxing tool !

Really great tips!
Glad you like them!

A sewing machine was actually the inspiration for the Scroll Saw ! Awesome to know the history !
Really great tips AP .Thank you. I have a Porter-Cable scrollsaw and I cannot get pinless blades to stay in. Any thoughts on where to look for help/tips?
What kind of clamp does PC use? If it uses a bolt to clamp the blade you might have to sand the end of the bolt flat.
@@alfredsmith9727 I have tried that Alfred. Sometimes it just pulls straight out or it will run a couple of minutes then, bang, it comes out.

Good luck on replacing the clamp. keep us posted !

Yea, and it is a good idea, however I consider that to be a waste of painters tape.
Thank you very much for the info. Is it possible to put the link for your magazine i'm unable to find it ?

Know where I can get the top quick release for my old Delta ?
Delta has discontented all older parts sadly, I'd check ebay for aftermarket clamps
Great channel! Can you give me the website for Scroller magazine?
The Magazine or the pattern catalog?
p.s forgot to say, great vid.
Thank You !
Don't forget a work light (which the Delta does not have) to luminate the work space. Comes in real handy for us 80 year olds. :) :)
Very True!
Naked to the human eye, LOL, invisible to the human eye sounds better, ya dope. hehe
🤷
Cool video. Keep scrolling, friend. 🤙
Thank you 👍
👍❤️
Thank You!

I'm unsure since my Grandfather built them and he was shorter than me
I live in Adelaide Australia can anyone recommend a magazine for scrolling I am a complete novice and Santa is bringing me a scroll saw for Christmas merry Christmas everyone
