Fond memories of my mom and grandparents canning. It’s so funny though as a child you just assume everyone would have a supply of jams, apple sauce, peaches, and tomatoes in their basement or pantry. Whenever out of jams we ran downstairs for more.
Watched my mom can but never took a lesson from her. Then when I had children I self taught with directions and remembering my mom canning (the seed was planted) I firmly believe in “planting the seed” in children. They may not show a lot of interest at first but I still believe in showing them how to do things. Canning was one of them. I had my children invite friends and we would s make salsa and then learn to can it. Jam was another one. I planted the seed! Now they have an idea on canning. My children as adults now love canning pressure and water bath! My boys too!
They love having homemade salsa, tomatoes, jams, fruit, jalapeños, soup etc! Oh. Let’s not forget corn on the cob in a jar! Tastes just like you are eating summer corn on the cob! Oh. They love chicken stock canned!!! We can that all year long since they love ramen!
My children are used to all homemade foods so processed foods they don’t like! Homemade salsa canned kids only want homemade! And only want canned tomatoes because it is so fresh!
I teach everyone to can when they are around! It gives them the confidence to do it on their own because they see just how wasy it is and not scary at all!
Annette, you might really love canning in Weck jars! I hsve only used Weck for water bath haven’t tried pressure canning. But Weck jars are soooo nice for tomatoes pickles jalapeños peaches salsa etc.

Just a note on pressure canning…. I thought I was not a true canner because I was afraid to pressure can too.
Presto came out with an electric pressure canner and it is the easiest to use! Not scary and so easy to use! Step by step it guides you! I have been using it to pressure can my soup corn green beans meats etc! You literally set it and it beeps when you need to push a button for the next step then beeps when you move pressure gauge and then that’s it it takes over and beeps when it’s done !
