One of the hardest lessons I learned in the USAF was that I have to immediately try (within reasonable parameters of course) to build back up if something goes wrong whether it was a slight equipment issue, or a full on loss of life. I broke my arm in 2010 and the first time I've ever done that. Immediately after getting diagnosed with 2 fractures to my ulna and a hairline fracture on my radius, they immediately sent me to the fitness center and had me doing small exercises on my injured wrist(no worries. It was simply a small 2lb weight just being gripped and rotated slowly as much as I could) and going almost non-stop every week. I learned later that they were instilling the warrior part of my fight instinct when something on me is disabled, to use what I have, and keep going to get the mission accomplished. Cause when I'm overseas in combat, combat doesn't stop when my arm breaks. I have to put the pain in the back of my mind and switch hands, and even use the little strength the broken one has left. It was a crucial lesson I learned that life doesn't slow down totally when something goes wrong. You simply have to look at what your remaining/altered options are and see how you can get the job done and make it home.
I always saw it as him having faith that Maverick could come back from this. If he let him stay grounded, he’d get stale. He’d start overthinking, then he would start doubting if he can fly anymore. Just my point of view

Iceman basically convinced Maverick that there was no reason for him to stay and everyone was against him. Maverick now had nothing to gain, nothing to prove, and nothing to lose. Maverick left was it was the only thing left to do. Any man wanting to keep what dignity he had left would have done the same thing.
