I was an ALT in Toyotama in 2003-2004. I remember the people leaving their cars running while shopping. I always thought it was an island thing because if anyone stole a car, they wouldn't be able to take it off the island.
I liked your presentation, I was in Japan in 1964 at a place called MCAS Iwakuni, I really liked it, I didn't get to do a lot touring and I should have. And, I missed that especially now in my older years. I will continue to view your videos to see what I've missed.
Great video. I worked in Japan for a few years in the late 80's and also in the early 00's - but in the big city. Now I'm retired and living in South America - often in rural areas. I love the countryside and would love to live in the countryside in Japan but the language issue is big. Learning basic Spanish is a lot easier than Japanese of course... I'd love a video on your stories of getting by with basic Japanese in the countryside. If this Corona Virus thing goes away I want to come back to Japan in the Fall. Maybe I can resurrect my basic Japanese skills. My brain occasionally throws in random Japanese words when I'm speaking Spanish - so some of it still there...
Marsha Lyon, Don't be afraid to travel. There is a device that you can speak English to and it will translate it and speak the foreign language you need. I can't remember what its called- you could google it and Amazon probably sells it. Hope that puts your heart to rest; there's always a solution to a problem.
Japan is probably the safest and most polite country you'll ever travel to. I am sure the Japanese people will be happy to help you whenever you need help. You will be surprised by their kindness. But do be careful of coronavirus.
I took a year of Japanese in college, studied on my own a bit after that, and practiced with Japanese language partners every week. I was about N5/N4 JLPT level. Now I'm almost at N3!
Hmm that's a good question! Besides maybe some Korean food options in restaurants, and seeing a lot of Korean tourists, I think Tsushima's culture is mostly similar to other rural places in Japan. It's interesting because I think most Japanese people in Tsushima haven't even been to Korea!
Hi! yay bay area! I liked it but it can be really different depending on where you are placed. I definitely recommend the JET Program though, it's a good experience if its something you're interested in
Wow, terrific videos! You should do voice-over work professionally! You have the best voice I've ever heard for videos and you speak so clearly. You must be a great ESL teacher!
how innocent you are young lady..I wish I could teach English in the same school with you. I may get benefits from your experience as well. how to apply for that,, kindly guide me.
I second Mitch! And your facial expression always starts like 😒 or 😔 and then you 😁 while you talk in a overly sugary-sweet voice that seems like you are talking to kindergartners...for a few words, then lather, rinse, repeat. It's FAR too choppy, EXTREMELY distracting, and I feel like I'm being talked down to. Also, based on some of the things in your list, I'm going to ASSUME that you have lived in San Francisco for your entire life minus your year in Japan. I SAY THIS BECAUSE...MANY of the things on your list are true of ANY rural area. (stores, bugs, restaurants, finding friends with someone in their late teens/early 20's, fashion, darkness, beauty). IN FACT, the only thing specific to JAPAN (and a few random, select, other countries) would be driving on the opposite side of the car/road. Traveling ANYWHERE where the language you are fluent in is not the primary language of the country is going to be challenging for ANYONE...and it's going to be EVEN MORE CHALLENGING if you visit an area without much tourism. (Like you said, you can sometimes get away with speaking English in Tokyo...because people who live in Tokyo have more EXPOSURE TO ENGLISH via tourists.) And, whether you are the only/one of few minorities in an area, or, really, ANY new person (ESPECIALLY in a small town!), people ARE GOING TO NOTICE YOU! I feel like you could teach people A LOT about your experiences in Japan...but nothing new was really shared in THIS video. ...And PLEASE, stop with all of the edits and jumps every 4 words!
Wow -- talk about an axe to grind! Are you always this preachy? I can just see the finger wagging. Give the young woman a break. These are her ideas and feelings, and she is entitled to them. Cover your ears if it offends. AND STOP USING CAPS ALL THE TIME. Now that's really irritating...
Why does everyone think I'm being MEAN? Is it because some of my words were capitilized? That was merely for emphasis! After watching a few of her videos and not commenting, I read some of the comments on this video, and I saw one I agreed with. So I commented on that topic (about the edits) and then elaborated on it ...and then I added my own comment about this PARTICULAR video. I grew up in a small town. The majority of what she said in this video is true for ANY small town. I watched this video with the intention of learning about Japan, and her experiences there, but I didn't. In fact the ONLY THING that I learned from this video was that people drive on the right side of a car/left side of the road. HEAVEN FORBID I use the COMMENT SECTION for what it's INTENDED FOR.... COMMENTING. (WOW...what a BITCH I am!!! 🙄)

I thought my three years in Shikoku was rural but your experience wins, we at least had a train! Amazing experience, thank you for sharing.
“This One time at band camp” Too cute😍

Thanks for the information and experiences, you seem like a nice person.
Thanks for watching! 😊
You are super sweet, keep up that positive attitude ♥️
thank you ❤️
I AM A SENIOR CITIZEN WHO HAS ALWAYS WANTED TO GO TO JAPAN. AFTER VIEWING THIS VIDEO I AM NOT AFRAID TO VENTURE TO RURAL AREAS.. SO, SO HELPFUL
haha! Thanks for your comment. It might be difficult to communicate though since people don't speak English

Great video! Now let's see some of those mad cooking skills...
Haha still working on those...
you truly lived in rural Japan. I lived in Suburban-to-Rural Japan and it was called Kai-Shi of Yamanashi-Ken.
You're so funny. 🤗 What great lifetime memories.
Very interesting
What a fun video! Can't wait to see more :D
glad you liked it!
I’m pretty interested in rural Japan so it was good to find this channel.
I’m sill making my way through your videos, but how much Japanese did you know before you moved over to Japan?
I took a year of Japanese in college, studied on my own a bit after that, and practiced with Japanese language partners every week. I was about N5/N4 JLPT level. Now I'm almost at N3!
Interesting........very interesting
OMG did u see that foreigner?! She..wore a costume! Scandalous.
So which other parts of Japan did you get to go to?
I heard it was common to keep house centipedes in Japan, did you ever hear/learn anything about that while you were there?
No, I saw a house centipede once. But I haven't heard about keeping them. I know some kids like to keep large beetles as pets!
Out of curiosity, did you notice any Korean cultural influence or simply differences from mainland Japan when you were on Tsushima?
Hmm that's a good question! Besides maybe some Korean food options in restaurants, and seeing a lot of Korean tourists, I think Tsushima's culture is mostly similar to other rural places in Japan. It's interesting because I think most Japanese people in Tsushima haven't even been to Korea!
Hi! Can you play Ghost of Tsushima? 😊
ヤマネコTシャツかわいい!
Wait two convenience stores in your city were hour and a half drive away? You can drive for hour and a half and still be in the same city?
Yes the island is very long!
@@logiebear Oh you meant island, but you said city, which confused me
@@madeye0 Yeah it's kind of confusing because the island is called Tsushima-shi, which means Tsushima city, so the island is technically a city
@@logiebear Got it, that's interesting

Wait. Why is there a plant on the arm of the couch?
Was the bug juicy???
A little juicy, also crunchy
I did have to clean some juice off the floor

Thank you! No I don't, I'm back in San Francisco now.
@@logiebear Hi⚘Are you going to make videos about the San Francisco bay area?
