Good video. I use LMR400 on my GMRS repeater, and it works just fine. Like yours, I get about 50-60 mile worth of coverage. Keep us informed and entertained Randy. CHEERS from Colorado
@@jmr it’s a fine coax for base use. For everyone else who might wonder why you shouldn’t use it on a repeater, it’s the dual shield of foil and braid. The inconsistent spots where the two touch inside the jacket can cause intermodulation distortion (intermod). That doesn’t mean the coax ‘won’t work’ it means it ‘could cause’ interference which maybe affects your receive or maybe transmits that interference and causes another nearby receiver to hear it. Because the points inside where the braid and foil touch can vary, it may or not cause noticeable issues that can be observed without test equipment. So for base station use it’s not an issue because you are either transmitting or receiving, not both at the same time like you would in duplex service (on a repeater). To summarize, can you use it on a repeater? Yes. Will it cause issues? Maybe. Does it work for the purposes of this video? Obviously. Is it a good idea? No. Why gamble when you know there exists a possibility of immediate or future issues. I would have used RG-8 for this short of a run.
A glad ham/new gmrs here. My 2 cents worth...LMR400 coax on the uhf band for 5o watts or less like in your home setup is really quite fine. To spend the money for hard line heliax or better for your setup in my opinion would never get you any noticeable increase in performance. Hel' you're located above a valley on a hill pointed right down at the entire landscape and everything on it. How much better of an arrangement could anyone want. Ya...LMR400 berry berry good. By the way...i enjoy your ytube channel very much and you are a great teacher. Thanks for taking the time to share. Cheers from tennessee

These past few weeks I was searching for the best mobile shortwave and got the Tecsun H-501 X . Then your channel popped up and now I've got the Baofeng uv-5r I think my life is changing thank you so much, I think your Channel's great, you're very knowledgeable and pretty funny.
Loving the GMRS content, recently applied for my license. Been a ham almost 10 years but I’m very interested in developing GMRS in my area as there are currently no users or repeaters that I know of. Love all the content, can’t understand a lot of these other hams in your channel hating and being a band policeman. I say do what makes you happy and what you enjoy with your hobby. I’ve been experimenting with VHF and UHF analog and digital modes more thanks to this channel. Hoping to eventually make a gmrs repeater and build a system for local licensed users!

Dear Diary, So I've been watching this guy on TH-cam yack about GMRS. As a result, I now have a Kenwood TK-860H installed in my '05 "grocery getter, otherwise known as a Ford Focus wagon, two Wouxun 805g's (affiliate link below), a Motorola HT1250 doped up for GMRS usage and RX only for area emergency services. And since I too want to be like my GMRS-brother, I just snapped up a factory fresh Vertex Standard EVX-R70 for a song (couldn't find a 7000 on eBay that the Sellers didn't think was constructed out of gold). I rolled the dice in getting the right software and programming cable, I literally held my breath when downloading the codeplug for the first time. Everything went perfect, had the repeater configured in under 5 minutes. Now it's time for the remaining necessities to get this bad boy on the air. Randy, you're rocking the duplexer that came with your Vertex, do you still recommend the one from buytwowayradios that you showcased with the dual 1000g setup? Thanks for all that you do, keep 'em coming. WROQ941...Clear.
The BuyTwoWayRadios duplexer is fine, just make sure you dont try putting in more than 40W so you dont risk it peaking over 50W and burning it up... The VXR7000 has adjustable power output, not sure about your R70.
If only you knew the trouble I went through programming that thing. I had to get the cable that was buried in the storage room, then I forgot I needed a driver so we had to find that for the vertex cable which took 30 minutes, then the CPS kept setting it to narrow band, and then it started raining on me and deadhead. Ohhh what fun that was but it’s cool seeing that box again and glad it’s working and rock solid
Hi Randy, you got me started in GMRS back early in 2020 when our Washington state lockdown began. Then this video introduced me to ZELLO. Thank you so much, I enjoy it, last night from Vancouver Washington I checked in on your Ranchino net.
Randy! Deadhead Dave says he can only take paypal or zelle. I don't have either of those two things so here is my donation to the Delta Repeater. When you chip in your hard earned pennies to help pay for the repeater site rental fee please put this in with it. If possible, I would like to see a video tour of the site and the repeater equipment.
Awesome video Randy…. I love the shirt… Lmr400 coax is good stuff. We use it for commercial data radios that are in the 450-470 MHz range. Of course there is better coax that you could use, but that would cost mucho dinero.
Keep bringing along your videos. Not sure what part of the country your in and most likely missed it awhile back. My land is in a valley and so I'm restricted in my transmission distance in southeastern Oklahoma. Got 🏔️ all around me.

This was an awesome vid Randy. Thank you for sharing everything & all the detail required for me to setup your great repeater on Zello. Keep your great vids coming!
"STFO" ! omg I laughed so hard I woke the kids up. You are awesome brother. Love the show Randy. I built a little Pelican style box repeater with a couple of uvr5 radios. It works but needs perfected. I'm going to look into that home setup you have here. Super cool!
I just got the same repeater w/duplexer. You got a better deal than me, I paid $650 for the repeater, programming cable, software, desktop mic, and shipping. I do have a question for you. Once I have my antenna on the roof, how do you suggest securing the coax as it runs down the side of my house? I tried looking all over TH-cam but I can’t find anything useful. I have vinyl siding and I have to run the cable vertically until I can get it down to where it will enter the house. Any suggestions?
You can buy little hooks/clips that screw or nail into the wall, but i'm not sureI would use those with vinyl siding.. Where my coax comes down its all brick - so the coax just hangs there. I have a big rock holdng it at the bottom so it doesnt blow around..
I used to work on commercial radio towers and you should see the grounding "systems" I've come across. I've also taken commercial level classes and workshops on antenna grounding and across the board, the consensus is... understand the theory, design a situationally practical system using best practices. Every site is different, has different challenges and subject to different environmental conditions. There is no "right answer", universal solutions, or hard rules.
i was really looking forward to a BAOFENG UV-5R video, but this is OK. I can chat with other BAOFENG UV-5R users in our favorite youtuber's valley with Zello 😃 so happy 😁
Hey Randy ,I’ve been binge watching your videos and love the content. I’ve been wanting to get a radio to use on the trails and I think the best choice for me will be an inexpensive GMRS . Thank you and Keep up the great work!
Enjoyed this one the best so far, found myself smiling after I'd said "experts" umpteen times 😂 Setup the Zello (I'm A-666) but unfortunately I don't have a GMRS licence as I'm in Scotland ☹️ I'll just have to make do with listening. Thanks for your videos, always interesting, and definitely entertaining, I full on laughed out loud at the finger sniffing! You need to look up a comedian from here called Micky Flanagan, he has a bit of an opinion about "fingering" (content not for young or delicate ears). Wonder if I can apply for a GMRS licence at the consulate in Edinburgh? Take care, Paul
Man who hurt you? Those "experts" are living rent free in your head. I have been a ham for 44 years, there is always someone telling me I did something wrong, just ignore them. You sir have a great location for sure! Have fun. I just purchased my GMRS license and hope to be able to use some of the repeaters I found in our area soon. 73
You setup a repeater for people to use for free? That's just not to be and the experts will tell you so. I'm just now getting into all this and it's so cool. I don't see any repeaters around me but I will have to look deeper into this. KS being 100 years behind the times as the experts tell me I may have to do like you and just put one up for non experts only to use. LOL Your sarcasm cracks me up every time i watch one of your shows.
The programming software screenshot showed frequencies outside the GMRS range. Guessing that screenshot wasn't what you have set up now? Excellent video, checking on Zello now.
I have a question as a new user for GMRS. I was reading the licensing on the FCC website and here’s what they stated. You cannot directly interconnect a GMRS station with the telephone network or any other network for the purpose of carrying GMRS communications, but these networks can be used for remote control of repeater stations.
The experts would most likely say use Heliax and N- connectors to cut down on loss. But for your situation LMR-400 is fine. I use it for now and it works well but we need too extend out our "fars" due to one of our group moving out of our current coverage capabilities and also the local club south running roughshod over us. We plan on Heliax and 14 element yagi's and simply Simplex one of the 2 remaining repeater channels with legal limit options. As our local "some people" to the south do everything they can to bother us almost every night(we do use input and output tones mind you) since our friend is moving ESE of them we figure yagi's will reduce their ability to hit us hard even though they somehow manage to run 150Watt repeaters on GMRS and LMR 100watt radios as well and not have issues. So we will go beyond lmr-400 coax not because its no good but we wish to stay fully legal on our side and get max performance out of our equipment. I liked how you explained how your antenna performs and explained your coverage vector which I dont think many understand how different types of antennas propagate differently. It seems many believe the bigger the better on GMRS. Much like the old CB mudducks preach very often. That might be a video worth putting up explaining what antenna is best for certain options on GMRS. Antennas for local repeaters, terrain type, and long range Simplex for examples. Would love to know where you get your shirts too. Love your vids and sarcasm, keep up the great work!!! Dave- The Old Fogey
Randy could sell a button that says "Experts" (like the Target button) I bet he'd sell a few! "Sad ham" stickers (or magnets) to pass out to the guy who had his license for "this many years."
Very cool video Randy Appreciate the information and the entertainment been Listening on the zello app on your repeater for a week or so @NotaRubicon Productions
Glad you threw the buy once cry once out the window and went with why have one when you can have 2 at twice the price. Your series on repeaters is supper helpful. I'm almost ready to install one at my home. I'm curious, what is your understanding of the rules governing GMRS repeaters on the internet. I ask because it was my understanding from the FCC rules that you couldn't do that with GMRS but could with HAM. What are you using to announce the base station's (your) call sign auto-magically? Again it's my understanding that a repeater must announce it's self every so often, just like a normal station.
Hello, can you please post a link to the VOX Box you are using? I have a vxr-7000 on 16 in San Diego that I would like to link onto Zello. Thank you. Ron
I am trying to so hard to figure out how to get my crosslink with Zello to work. There's not a lot I found on Google about the settings other than play with them. I'm no expert by any means, just a guy trying to help his local community. The way I have this set up, I have a Midland MX275 with the 2.5mm to 3.5mm going to my mic jack. I have a Baofeng UV-82HP with the 3.5mm going to the speaker jack. Every now and then I can get noise but nothing at all is reliable about the setup. I tried using just the Baofeng and that didn't work. I also don't know where to find all these HAM and GMRS groups with the super top secret to doing this. I realize it's not a lot to go on, but any information would be helpful. P. S. - Your videos are awesome! I have watched nearly all of them! I've also ordered A Wouxun 1000G Plus for my truck, KG-S88G, KG-XS20G for my side by side, KG-UV9G, Retivis repeaters, the Midland antennas you have on your jeep! These radios are next gen radios. I do hate that the XS20G isn't superheterodyne. To my knowledge it's the only Wouxun that isn't (At least that's what Stephen with Buy Two Way Radios told me on the phone.) You definitely deserve the credit and I look forward to more videos.
Whew...😥 You said Zello! Not Zillow.... Some "X-pert was going to sell your house"! Sounds like you have filled up the toilet bowl, below you, with much Mega-ja-her-its! Zenu 👽 would be proud. The Fars are strong, with this one! 💪😲🖖
I know you said you wanted a "better" repeater, with more duty cycles - but were the woxuns a problem? As long as the LMR stays dry, it should be fine. Living in California, you probably have no worries for a long time even if what people say is true. I'm in wet humid Florida, I'm gonna try it. Run what you brung and all - it's already connected to an antenna up there, why should I take it down until it fails? The first rule of grounding, is NEVER talk about grounding.
I just bought the tram 1486. It should be here Sunday , it is marked for delivery on Sunday. I can' find anything on the tram 1486 on you ube. I was hoping to find a review . I hope this is worth it?
As a sad expert I can tell you (everything) the Far’s 😜signals will bounce ,reflect and boomerang off the 80,000 foot mountains to another mouthtain across the space between them. Technically speaking of course 😉
Hey Randy, Bob your favorite fan here from Maine. For your Tram 1486 seen in your video from a year ago, and assuming you still have it in place. Do you feel the ground plane with those 3 horizontal spikes at the bottom are adequate enough? I saw your past review of the Nagoya GPK-01 with the 21" Radials. Just looking for the Tram 1487 is OK as is? Or what you have/ find might be working better?
Hello.. Robert... I still have the 1486 on the roof and it's working just like it did on day-1. The ground plane for ~460Mhz does not need to be big, and when you do the math, you will see that the radials are fine.. The 1487 is for much lower frequencies (~180Mhz range) and that is why the radials are so much larger. Get the antenna that is designed for whatever frequency range you will be transmitting in.
I thought that LMR-400 was better. Why do they say it can't be used for a repeater? What cable would "they" recommend? Maybe an episode all about RF cable would be fun.
LMR-400 is plenty good enough for a repeater - that's why I use it on MY repeater just like thousands of others. "Some people" like to say LMR-400 is not the best, greatest possible cable in the world because over time, if you don't take proper precautions when installing, water can get inside of it. "The experts" would recommend 'hard-line', which costs 10X more, when telling you how to spend your money.
Assembling the KG1000 repeater was a fun learning experience but two KG-1000's strung together is a large, unwieldy mess of wires, especially when you consider that to prevent desense, you have to keep the radios several feet apart. A single, purpose-made repeater in a box is more practical and performs better.

There is no "right answer", universal solutions, or hard rules.
really enjoy your videos. thank you, for the time you put in them. have learned a lot from you.
Well done, Sir!
Experimenting at it's finest!
Did the “experts” actually leave comments on how to ground?
🤦♂️
Love the vids 👊
I like the fars in your talks. 10/10
Congrats Randy, thats a nice set up.
Really enjoyed that, great video. You have a beautiful home.
i was really looking forward to a BAOFENG UV-5R video, but this is OK. I can chat with other BAOFENG UV-5R users in our favorite youtuber's valley with Zello 😃 so happy 😁
You are my favorite TH-cam person ever. Your content is Awesome 👌 👏 👍
Super cool setup... Thanks for sharing!
Sir you are both entertaining and an epic troll. May you have a blessed Christmas
Hey Randy ,I’ve been binge watching your videos and love the content. I’ve been wanting to get a radio to use on the trails and I think the best choice for me will be an inexpensive GMRS . Thank you and Keep up the great work!
i as a favorite viewer laughed much more than i think i should had
That's cool, I installed the app. Greetings from Ireland
Thank you, Randy. I'm not one of those #airquotes. I appreciate the information.
I made my repeater from a pair of KG-1000Gs using LMR600 and LMR400. It works just fine. 25 mi away is the farthest contact so far.
Well this is neat.. and thats a "good" proper entry level repeater.
Oh I joined your repeater on Zello too, sounds fun so far.
Beautiful dog Randy!
Very nice setup sir! Thanks for sharing!
Randy I love your t shirt , & your back up battery good video😀 some experts
There's a lot of things in this video that I like 🤝🤙
Did you get rid of the Yagi antenna? Keep the killer videos coming!
It might not help "some people", but Randy is hilarious when you're stoned
I need to find a good repeater for GMRS to install here in rural Iowa.
Am I the only one that can see that the radio is a Vertex Standard VX-7000 and not a Motorola , or is just me ?
Motorola bought them out i believe and Vertex makes them for Motorola.
I think Motorola purchased vertex in 2009 or 11 that's probably why he's calling it maybe a Motorola
Randy, do you happen to have a link to the vox box you used?
I love that shirt you are wearing!
Picture shown was before he uploaded the Code plug from the Repeater.
when using the internal duplexer, where do you connect the antenna?
Thank you! Your guidance or anybody that is reading this is appreciated
Were they expecting you to install heliax feed line! All I use is LMR-400 on my antennas. Back in the 70's and 80's, I used 213.
I have a question as a new user for GMRS. I was reading the licensing on the FCC website and here’s what they stated. You cannot directly interconnect a GMRS station with the telephone network or any other network for the purpose of carrying GMRS communications, but these networks can be used for remote control of repeater stations.
Please quote the rule that says "..or any other network", I would like to see that one.

Watching this guy is like being in the TWILIGHT ZONE
The Twilight Zone of knowledge
Randy could sell a button that says "Experts" (like the Target button) I bet he'd sell a few! "Sad ham" stickers (or magnets) to pass out to the guy who had his license for "this many years."
Very cool video Randy Appreciate the information and the entertainment been Listening on the zello app on your repeater for a week or so @NotaRubicon Productions
Round of applause for Randy's shirt!!!
😂Thank You for a good laugh. All of the “……..” experts!
Great video! Love the 👕!
Instead of using an old laptop, could I use a raspberry pi for this, and where do I obtain a vox box?
I have a VX-7000 and mistakenly plugged in a Motorola microphone which shorted out the logic board. Do you know where i could get that repaired?
Whew...😥 You said Zello! Not Zillow.... Some "X-pert was going to sell your house"! Sounds like you have filled up the toilet bowl, below you, with much Mega-ja-her-its! Zenu 👽 would be proud. The Fars are strong, with this one! 💪😲🖖
Any chance you can link or post the model/source of the box you use to connect the laptop to the KG-905G?
I've been waiting for this moment all my Life!!!!
Vox box? Can anyone elaborate on this? I'm using a cell phone with aprs cable into a BF888 but looking for a better set up. Thank you
I can't be the only person who wants to see the uncut version.
@@TheNotaRubicon Thank you Randy, can hardly wait for your next video. Maine is watching and listening WRJR-209
Thats freakin' awesome!
Can you get the Zello gateway running on Linux or is it Windows only?
I thought that LMR-400 was better. Why do they say it can't be used for a repeater? What cable would "they" recommend? Maybe an episode all about RF cable would be fun.
LMR-400 is plenty good enough for a repeater - that's why I use it on MY repeater just like thousands of others. "Some people" like to say LMR-400 is not the best, greatest possible cable in the world because over time, if you don't take proper precautions when installing, water can get inside of it.
"The experts" would recommend 'hard-line', which costs 10X more, when telling you how to spend your money.
Great video!
Nice house! We're definitely in different tax brackets.
Also may I ask why you chanted to the Motorola repeater? Where there issues with the KG-1000 setup?
Assembling the KG1000 repeater was a fun learning experience but two KG-1000's strung together is a large, unwieldy mess of wires, especially when you consider that to prevent desense, you have to keep the radios several feet apart.
A single, purpose-made repeater in a box is more practical and performs better.
