Due to vandalism, the Weston Observatory Tower is only open for one weekend per year during foliage season under supervision . The Tower used to be open to the public when it was first constructed as people used to be civil .
Wow ❤❤ this video ..brings back memories 😀 I graduated high school in 83 .. the ledge was our summer hangout 😂 day and nights .. swam .. jumped off or watched others dive off”the 55 “ all day .. lots of scrapes bruises some blood 😂😂 from mostly trying to get back up the ledge after jumping . Then , partied in the woods at night , lots of steamy car windows in Weston observatory parking lot 😂😂.. The cops would pop up and give everyone a scare ..parking lot emptied and refilled after they left.. They did bust people sometimes … when they had nothing better to do..Although pretty much all the teenagers were drinking and driving😳😳 legal age was 18 back then and convenience stores didn’t card anyone sooooo.. it was all great fun , but I’m pretty sure I know why they finally filled it in .. There were several drownings there and a lot of injuries.. I went to Central class of 83 . A home room friend who sat in front of me named Gary drowned there 1 or 2 days before Graduation. He went in but never came back up . His body got stuck on something down there. The water was very deep and there were huge logs rocks and even an old junk from the quarry.. They had to send in divers ..he was under for 2 days 😞😞 Graduation was kinda sad .. As I recall the ledge got filled in real quick after that .. I believe that summer ..
Think I went up there once in high school back around 1990 but friends and I didn't stay long but we used to always hang out down at the park..I was born in Manchester and lived there until like 2009. Definitely will be checking out more of your videos.
Been living in the City of Manchester for 24 years. There is a lot of hidden gems that can be discovered if you just look around. A good friend of mine John Clayton, author of NH History, and was the Head of the Historical Society can tell you a lot about the City and the surrounding areas.
Yes I've met John briefly on a job that I did some work on a little over a year ago on Harrison Street . He happened to stop by as it was a well known historic house to do an interview for the union leader about the house . Unfortunately, the new owners were not restoring the home and once again hacked the hell out of it which is a shame because it was once a very neat and unique house at one point . I've made a few videos of the project . I left the job as I'm about restoration and couldn't stand what was done to this house .th-cam.com/video/OaSHy5iVPI4/w-d-xo.html
Yes there is but most people could care less about history . I talk to people all the time that have no clue about some of these areas that I film . People always complain that they're bored and that there's nothing to do in Manchester , just go for a walk as you'll come across a ton of history .
We used to jump off the 55 into the water all the time they had another ledge, a little bit lower, which is around 40 but yeah, I did a lot of partying in that area back in the late 70s early 80s
Ya im 50 and I remember going up there as a kid it was way more open no trees in the quarry and people were there all the time swimming and jumping off the cliffs
we walked up from McIntyre ski area just to look around. There were another Quary or two also with water and crayfish and Goldfish. we walked a lot as children.
The place where you jump from is called 55. it was a rite of passage for me in 1978. The water was green and there was a school of giant gold fish. Two huge stumps floating you could sit on after you jumped.
I was there in the 60s as a child we lived in the housing project I also remember going for shoes at LeBlanc shoe store is it still there ty for posting
That was fascinating. I used to go there in the seventies. I remember there were always dirty old men watching us young people. They were basically harmless. But it reminded me of how todays kids never go out anymore because of fear of being attacked. Never happened back then. We thought it was funny as kids
Very interesting, love the history! I try not to go near Manchester, because of the crime which is despicable. I hope our once very beautiful, rustic state finds its way back to what it once was with good ideals. Thank you!
That was fun to learn about the Brownies! 6:22 Why do you think the Weston Tower is red and white in this historical photo if it was made of granite blocks? Do you think the granite was painted those colors or was the tower made of different materials in that photo at that time?
Good question as I didn't notice that as I'm not sure , but if I were to guess that postcard seems to be an artists illustration and not an actual photo as maybe they decided to add color to it.
I was only in Manchester until the 4th grade on the West Side , I attended kindergarten at Gossler and then attended St.Mary's until the 4th grade up until 1985 .
I also wanted to say thank you for this post today It would have been my best friends birthday today but he passed away but we use to go up there All the time and smoke but I moved out of NH and one of the last few days I was there we went up there and just talked about how much we enjoyed growing up together in school and what not 😢 but it crazy to me I found this video today again thanks for the blast from the past

Been awhile since i had been up there as well. Used to sneak over to Macyntire and hang out on top of hill.

Memories 😊. Thanks!
Jumped off 55" back in the day. I have a photo from right after it was filled in , before everything grew.
@@zoec1969 I wish I did , I missed it by a few years as I'm 48.

Yes, I remember when they added the green die and you could barely see the big goldfish.
I was there in the 60s as a child we lived in the housing project I also remember going for shoes at LeBlanc shoe store is it still there ty for posting

If you grew up in Manchester then you know it is there and have been there. It is sad it is longer open as it used to be
It's a bit dangerous as not everyone has common sense or are surefooted.
Very interesting, love the history! I try not to go near Manchester, because of the crime which is despicable. I hope our once very beautiful, rustic state finds its way back to what it once was with good ideals. Thank you!
Manchester does have crime but it's very seldom random , it's usually the junkies and thugs causing the violence amongst each other over drugs.
That was fun to learn about the Brownies!

Is the quarry not fenced off anymore? I remember it being fenced off and razor wire all around it.
It is but it's easily accessible
you going to see the Goldfish? I been there
If you go the road way. They have no trespassing signs
I lived not too far from Deerfield Park.
Question for you...I grew up on west.side as well i went to Brown primary and then Brown middle what schools did you go to?

@@KristineS73 Your parents ran away from Manchester at about the same time then as they seen the downfall coming .
@@manchesterexplorer8519 Yes absolutely!
I was there before they filled it.
I thought everyone knew about that place
Some do most don't.
You should go to battery point 💎

I used to swim and jump off. Those ledges the only thing I did not see was the painting of the girljack knife.
