  • In this video, we will look at a few old brick buildings that once housed Manchester millworkers, as well as the progress of The Chandler House restoration project. In the latter half of this video, we will look at a few finely crafted homes from the late 1800s and early 1900s, as well as bike around the inner city at random.

Thank you so much for your exposure of beautiful Manchester architecture! Without your work, I don’t think many residents would be able to appreciate the history that you care about. Thank you!!

That's my goal . It's a bit of a desperate attempt in hopes that future generations start to restore these buildings. But in the meantime, I'll document as much as possible, as in 30+ years from now, many of these old buildings that are neglected will start to vanish into thin air.

Cool. Finally got to see a place that I lived in. 163 Myrtle...right next to the 'Baldwin' Was a decent place. All of those places when they were built were very utilitarian. Meant for housing workers. At the time early 200s, someone spent huge money restoring 168 Walnut St...just around the corner. I think it still is in good shape today.

I've never been to Manchester and probably never will but I stumbled upon your channel today. My husband moved from Montana to Manchester in the early 80s after he graduated from pharmacy school and worked at a pharmacy there for a few years. I'm really enjoying watching your videos. I agree with you about taking these beautiful old homes and slapping on that disgusting vinyl siding. Keep up the good work!

Sorry , right around the 3 minute mark there must've been a glitch created while uploading as the screen turns black for a few seconds , so please be patient.

I love this channel. Thanks so much for all the time and effort you put into it. Really. Filming, archival research, but most of all, the commentary is excellent. Please, keep up the good work.

Hi, thanks so much for the videos. I lived in one of these town houses from about 1957 to 1962. The units had a basement, first and second floor. They were 3 bedroom, 1 bath, ktichen, den/dining room, living room. I attended Straw School grammar school. I noticed awhile back while on a visit to Manchester, that the Goodwin Funeral Home across the street from the old Straw School building looks abandoned/neglected. It was such a gorgeous building. Maybe you could do a video on that building.

@user-mz9vv1ed1l Yes the Goodwin funeral home hasn't been in operation for about 3 years, if I can recall. Ironically, I gave the owners a quote to paint the exterior about 6 years ago but never got a rresponse. I believe it's for sale.

I lived in that apartment complex on Hollis (Manchester Place) just 1-2 year ago. Pretty nice area. We could walk to downtown restaurants. There is also a gym just cross those townhomes in the video.

I agree as it's a scenic and historic area. I also used to be a Gym rat and recall that being a Gold's Gym.

Really enjoying your channel! Originally from NH, and your channel is making me appreciate the great urbanism of Manchester. I love that you travel around on a bike; it's the best way to experience a city.
Also oof to the drivers driving right down the bike lane. Those are not well designed! 😬

I avoid biking on the streets, as its simply to dangerous these days. Manchester was originally planned for horse and buggy , so yeah, the bike lanes are a mess.

Chandler house is very beautiful , condos nice as well. Thank you for this great tour. I feel the same way about the plywood paneling of the 1970 as you feel about siding. In the house your friend is working on nice stairs and hallway. It seems like nh landlords are some of the worst. I have lived in several state nh landlords are specially bad.

My grandparent's house built in 1912 had 'fake' clapboards that were milled from I don't know what(maybe Cedar or Redwood). They are tongue and groove boards milled to look like clapboards(2 clapboards on each board). Essentially, they were the sheathing and the finished appearance. I'm not sure there are many examples of that around anymore. Very durable stuff and quite expensive back in the day I bet.
That house at 168 Walnut has the curved windows/curved glass. They did an impressive job at restoring that. Though I did notice the curved clapboards started to pop away after a couple of years. Restoration is not an easy thing since the parts and knowledge aren't common anymore.

I know that type of siding; there are a few houses in Manchester that have it. It's basically shiplap boards and yes, theyre very durable.

What's funny is the woodwork within that rundown hallway that I videod seen here 23:00 would be considered luxury these days and would cost 10's of thousands of dollars to mill and install as it's something that you'd only see in a modern mansion these days. Back then this was considered common.

You're so right about landlord neglect. Many of the tenements on the West Side need serious work but the owners just don't care.

    • @manchesterexplorer8519
      @manchesterexplorer8519  19 วันที่ผ่านมา

Yup , that's one of the reasons why I started videoing and documenting, as many of these buildings won't exist in 30 years from now due to neglect.

I think I like your videos….I suggest keeping the videos positive. This was is filled with a lot of negativity, regarding history, choices made.. and just complaining about people’s homes..
