My wife and I were married to this music in 1981. The justice of the peace had this playing on his office stereo when we walked in. He started to turn it off, and we asked him to let it play! We love Rick Wakeman -- and it must have been magic. 30 years later, and we're still married.

The Forest Journey on through ages gone, to the centre of the earth Past rocks of quartz and granite, which gave mother nature birth Burial ground of ancient man, his life no more is seen, A journey through his time unknown, I wonder where he's been Wonder where he's been, wonder where he's been, wonder where he's been The shore now gone behind the hills, a forest in our sight, Rocks and distant mountains, bathed in waves of blinding light Forests from far gone time, no living man has seen, A private prehistoric world, for you and I a dream Brownish hue dictates my eye, no colour hides their fear, Flowers faded, dull and cold, now bleached by atmosphere Creatures twisting under trees, huge monsters soaked with rage Hidden deep below our earth, a frightening, bygone age Their shepherd came, now long extinct, a huge primeval man The three men filled with disbelief, just turned as one and ran.
We had music appreciation classes at our school, when I was 14, the year this came out. But I didn't really need it. This album was my "gateway drug" into classical music, and I never regretted it. But even better was finally getting to meet the man himself, and having him sign my vinyl copy!
This came out when I was 14, and though I liked SOME classical music, I wasn't very into it as a rule. Two albums changed all of that...Mike Oldfield's HERGEST RIDGE...and this one. They've been huge favorites of mine every since, and always will be.
@MiMangereiQualcosaNG The Battle was a different song, set on the sea during a fight to the death between an Ichtheosaurus and a Plesiosaurus. Both songs were on the second side of the LP version of Journey. In the long-gone days of vinyl, there were no individual tracks except, of course, side 1 and side 2.
I believe this was a great sensation in the 1st half of the 70's. An inovation. Songs mixed filling the whole side. It must have been as if rock music was trying to prove that it could be more than verse and chorus or just 4 min. simple tunes. There was possibility to look for more depth in youth's music.
There were 2 vocalists in 1974/1975. Ashley Holt, that played in a band called Warhorse, that Wakeman and the very first Deep Purple bassist Nick Simper and Barney James, the drummer on this album, once were there too. And the other vocalist was Gary Pickford Hopkins.
I bought this record and loved it - I can't remember how old I was. Same with the Arthur album... Listening to it now, I can't believe how crap it was! Six Wives of Henry the Eighth still resonates, but all the others seem to get progressively worse and bloated. No wonder we had the punk / new wave reaction!
No. But I don't see how I can support my claim... either you hear or you don't (you can always take a good tuner I guess and see that he is quite far from the notes).
Ashley was much better with 'Warhorse', an early 70s band that featured ex-Deep Purple bassist Nick Simper. His vocals were horrible on this album...not sure what Mr. Wakeman was thinking. Still...if you can look beyond Ashley's poor vocals, the recording itself was brilliant. Thanks for the post...

The Forest
Journey on through ages gone, to the centre of the earth
Past rocks of quartz and granite, which gave mother nature birth
Burial ground of ancient man, his life no more is seen,
A journey through his time unknown, I wonder where he's been
Wonder where he's been, wonder where he's been, wonder where he's been
The shore now gone behind the hills, a forest in our sight,
Rocks and distant mountains, bathed in waves of blinding light
Forests from far gone time, no living man has seen,
A private prehistoric world, for you and I a dream
Brownish hue dictates my eye, no colour hides their fear,
Flowers faded, dull and cold, now bleached by atmosphere
Creatures twisting under trees, huge monsters soaked with rage
Hidden deep below our earth, a frightening, bygone age
Their shepherd came, now long extinct, a huge primeval man
The three men filled with disbelief, just turned as one and ran.

RICK WAKEMAN IS FOR WHO KNOW GOOD MUSIK!
'Back in time', it was considered Rick's 'lowest point' but now... Wow...
thnx rock brother
@mccaiian1234 You don't need this things, this music make movie without any ther add. This music is the magic! Have a fun 2011!
JOURNEY to the centre of the mind...
RICK WAKEMAN!!!!!!
They used to have this entire LP on line with the movie video incorporated in the backround. It was great. what happened to it?
@majmom2000 Ha! me too !
down we all go, though usually not as deep as the actual center of the earth...
lumínico...

I wonder who sang this song!!!

156 likes vs. only two dislikes.
Ashley Holt solist + Gary pickford hopkins
Nah that would be Ted Nugent !
Who is the singer?
He didn't become a super star, 2 years later, in 1976, he recorded his last album with Wakeman.
@nicolasdelariva y a quien le importa? xD
I thought this album was the shit when I was 15. Then I turned 16 and realized it was crap.
@willy nilly
Huh, I wonder how you're going to feel about it when you reach 17...?
I bought this record and loved it - I can't remember how old I was. Same with the Arthur album... Listening to it now, I can't believe how crap it was! Six Wives of Henry the Eighth still resonates, but all the others seem to get progressively worse and bloated. No wonder we had the punk / new wave reaction!
But your point of view would probably change, if you discovered what happened to music when mtv arrived in 1981.
Sonds like ripped from an Irish folksong.
Pretty ok to listen to except for the woman doing voice exersice.
The vocalist is Ashley Holt - a man, not a woman. And he can't sing.
Nobody here is bothered by the fact that the singer starting at 0:33 is horribly out of tune?
+liav teichner Maybe I don't listening right... but I think you're wrong. He seems to singing in a hard region for him, but is "good".
No. But I don't see how I can support my claim... either you hear or you don't (you can always take a good tuner I guess and see that he is quite far from the notes).
No. Only you.
He does get some of the words wrong!
I grew up listening to this album and even as a child, I cringed at this part. He totally ruins it.
