Can you Beat Pokemon Red/Blue with Only a Butterfree?

  • Bye bye Butterfree? Not today, it's the only Pokemon we can use, and we're gonna try to beat the entire game!
    Edited by: ‪@SimplyAJ‬
Complete Playlist: • Kanto Solo Challenges
    Rules and Explanations
Rules: (1) Only use the one Pokémon in Battle, others for HMs are fine. (2) No Items in battle (3) No Glitches* (4) Set Mode (5) No saving in the Elite Four (6) No evasion moves
Badge Boost "Glitch" Explanation: When you collect odd numbered badges the game boosts a stat by 12.5%. Brock gives ATK, Surge DEF, Koga SPE, and Blaine SPC (in game text is wrong). When any of your stats are modified (even by you using a move like Withdraw, or your opponent using Leer) the badge boosts are re-applied. So If you use Swords Dance, you also gain *an additional 12.5% in Speed/Defence/Special (on top of the 12.5% you were supposed to be getting). When you level up, the game corrects this error, and only the non-glitch 12.5% remains. Because of how difficult it is to avoid, I've allowed for it to be exploited, since opponents will spam Leer/Growl anyways, and this way battles are less random. Red/Blue are extremely buggy, so there's always going to be some glitches present, and because of how unavoidable this one is, it is allowed in runs, and considered more like a special Generation 1 mechanic as opposed to a glitch.

I have always said to never underestimate the early-game Bug-types. They can pull through when it matters most. And I feel like it's even better in a real in-game scenario because you're evolving it from Metapod, which has Harden if you caught it as a Metapod (or has it regardless in Yellow), and thus has a consistent means of badge boost glitching. Whether that would make any sort of difference in a solo run, I couldn't say, but as part of a team, I have used Butterfree that kept on contributing to the team's success long past the early stages of the game.

"But becomes useless in the endgame"
Laughs in 'absolutely carried my team through the E4 and Champ at lvl52 WITHOUT Sleep Powder'
Commenting at the start here, I've been watching through the playlist in order and have been so excited to finally get to this one. Butterfree is easily my favorite gen1 Pokemon and one of my favorites of any gen. Its movepool in gen1 drives me bonkers, though. It really feels like they wanted to make it a Bug/Psychic but didn't for whatever reason. I would assume for balance reasons, but, uh... Looking at the rest of gen1, that seems unlikely, so your guess is as good as mine.
Hearing you express concern over Koga was absolutely HILARIOUS for me seeing as in the same run with that Butterfree, I was able to completely no-sell Koga, likely at a lower level too since I was still using my starter. He did manage to poison me, but because of how poison works in gen1, I still didn't take any damage from it. I really don't think you should've bothered with trying to put the Muk to sleep, not with Sleep Powder's garbage accuracy. You only need a single dodge/useless move, after all, since it's a two-shot.
Yea, okay, that e4 run was absolutely hilarious. Butterfree is truly blazing it there lol. Boooooooo on that placement. I mean you're probably right but also I'm incredibly biased.
