The real Hellboy comics mostly consisted on Hellboy handling investigations in far off villages located in the ass end of nowhere. They were limited and the tone was more horror focused. Furthermore, the dude who "adopted" Hellboy was afraid of him, even though the big red always was respectful and calm. Bottom line is that he was never comedic in the comic. His quips were mostly few and far off in between.
Bottom line is that this movie looks truer to the comic book.
