"Grief can be almost a feeling of possession. It's so hard to feel safe in your body, especially if it's traumatic grief, no prep time grief."-David Dastmalchian. He is one of the most self aware and vulnerable actors I've ever heard. Thank you! 🙂

David Dastmalchian is one of my favorite actors. Ever since I saw him Batman, I've seen him pop up more and more and he's always intrigued me. It overjoys me to see that he's human, that he puts in the work, and that he's arriving at a place of peace and self love and acceptance. I don't know that you're reading this Mr. Dastmalchian, but you've inspired me to start therapy. Hopefully someday I'll arrive at your state of peace.

I wish to meet David in person someday, I'm sure he is a fantastic person.

I rarely, if ever, use the word "genius" when talking about actors. In this case, however, I think I'll agree with you.
For actors, it usually just goes "skill" and "talent"; but with David Dastmalchian, the "genius" is actually justified.

Got to see Late Night With the Devil last night with my wife and it was extraordinary. Dave Dastmalchian proving once again that he's one of the hardest working men in Hollywood with a performance that rides the line between tragedy and absurdity. Excellent supporting cast, pitch perfect period detail, treacle black humour, and an unexpected "oh, that's who that was" moment courtesy of Michael Ironside.

I'd seen several of his films before his first appearance on your channel, and after that, I immediately checked out all the others I could find. I'd sign up to your patreon just for the longer version of this, but my finances are about on a par with my mental health at the moment (ruling out both patreon and therapy). I appreciate you guys a lot though, and if/when my money circumstances allow, I'll sign up!

I've loved David ever since I saw him in the first "Ant-Man" movie. I also loved him in "The Suicide Squad" and was excited to see him in a small, but excellently performed role in "Oppenheimer." I don't have the amount of trauma in my life as David has had in his, but I'm in a very long and complicated assessment to get into an organization that offers psychotherapy for seniors in the New York City region. Listening to him speak about how therapy has helped him makes me feel more confident in my choice to find a good therapist.
P.S. I manage a psychiatric practice and work every day with people who have many more issues than I will ever have. I love being able to help them as much as I can.

"You can get lost in the abyss very quickly, and it's not just dangerous. It can be deadly" 😵‍💫 YES! I've never seen this movie but it's going on my list now, because the way this family was described starting around the 22:17 time stamp feels exactly like my house growing up. I have an entire family compromised of that type of brilliant mind that's highly prone to turn against itself in older age, or after severe trauma. Lots of police officers, detectives, combat engineers, and creative types. We're slightly eccentric and proud of it until someone ends up the hospital or is diagnosed with dementia 🤦
During the pandemic I watched two loved ones descend into really dark places far past my ability to help them safely. They never bounced back and it's heart breaking. I work with a therapist who has known me for many, many years so I'm okay. But I often wonder where that tripwire is that people I love keep crossing over, and am I doing enough work to ensure I don't find it.
One thing has become surprisingly clear though... because of growing up with a mother suffering from mental illness, I instinctually developed some rock solid reality testing of my own from a very young age. It's amazing how we learn to adapt to our environments.
This was a great episode 🙌 Gave me lots to reflect on and think about in a different way.

Yay! Another David D ep!! Tell him I enjoy his work and I really love his opinions and thank him for putting himself out there and raising awareness of emotional pain. I find a lot of relatability to his words

Everyone should go see Late Night With the Devil when it comes out, I saw it at a film festival in October and it's great. David is phenomenal in it

I like that he calls it a "no brainer", while many people above the age of 30 struggle with the fact that they are still affected by their childhood and their parents, *while also trying to be a parent* 😅

"Loneliness" will do that to you.

Thanks for the extra video! Really enjoy your deconstructions of films that most people enjoy without necessarily thinking about afterward e.g. romcoms and films labeled 'kids films'. They have a huge impact on us, be it consciously or unconsciously, and it is interesting to discover the values and lessons buried in some, good or bad. For example, it was really surprising to find out that the original Disney "Beauty and the Beast" is actually a healthy relationship, while the one in "Pretty Woman" is not. The latter film made me uncomfortable as a teenager, and your analysis really helped me figure out why

I appreciate his boundary drawing over not using his work as therapy. That said, I ended up in a production of Into the Woods after an incredibly difficult year that included a miscarriage and it was such an incredibly helpful experience. I played Cinderella, so I had some distance from my actual grief (the Baker's Wife might have been too close), but it gave me a space to process the ugly feelings of random suffering and sudden loss. I found out I was pregnant again at the end of the show, and I'm so thankful I had that time to use art to work through my feelings. Pregnancy after loss is always complicated, and that was no exception, but I was in such a better place because of my acting journey on that show. All that to say, boudaries are important, AND acting can be therapeutic, if the environment and material are safe and healthy.
