    I think the one huge advantage of using directional air roll is the ability to turn on more axis than free air roll. There are a lot of instances where you need your car on a certain side of the ball to make the best play, and directional air roll will allow you to not only position on that side, but to turn your car's orientation to also have better position (nose on the ball for example). Sometimes with free air roll, it just isn't possible to do both things simultaneously.

    i feel like its kinda chalked tho tbh, being 100x more used to directional vs free going into this - need a video of like "i played 1 month of only free air roll to compare to directional air roll" or something like that (it requires practice to use properly)
    mad respect for the experiment tho, you're onto something🙌

      If we bind directional air roll to a trigger, we can moderate the speed at which we are turning, giving us as much control as free roll. Technically speaking directional on the trigger would be much better than free roll. I've always been better at free roll persnally. The differences in what's "better" probably make little to no difference in most ranks, and personal preference will be much more helpful.

      I used to only used Free Air roll up until I hit Grand Champ before I switched to mainly Air roll right. Now I'm definitely more used to directional but I still have all those years of only using free air roll and I think that definitely still allows me to use it with very good control. And after using both for so long and getting good at both I'd still absolutely say directional is the better move. Once you have full control with directional you can move in ways that you just simply can't do while only using free!

    I must say normal air roll in the short term will get you to do well, and everything is consistent. But finding the angles to touch the ball and feeling like you can reach the ball no matter where it is feels much nicer when you have the access of directional air roll. I HIGHLY recommend putting in the time for directional air roll. The best way I did it was using free play slowing the game to 50% and then observing when I go in the air how I would turn my car to get left and right. Then find out how you can go backwards and forwards, angle the car up and down. And keep doing this for any scenario you might think will be awkward and its soo efficient and fast learning air roll.

    While directional air roll is definitely better than non directional air roll, it’s fair to say the biggest issue for you is how much more used to directional air roll you are compared to free roll.
    I’ve been learning directional air roll, and my control is less consistent now without free roll, BUT I am doing some things better when I maintain control, so I’m seeing other benefits already. It’s just constantly uncomfortable.
    I will say, that as long as you practice directional air roll over time and then just start adding it in here and there, it makes the growing pains a lot less severe and become much easier than just trying to constantly force it, but I also made it GC without it, which I think gave me a good baseline to learn it quickly.

    Directional air roll all the way. I only use free air roll for things like wave dashes or very small corrections.
    There are some aerial maneuvers that just aren’t possible without directional air roll. It makes it so much easier to make the perfect touch. HOWEVER, I’m sure that some people could argue that you can still make the perfect touch using free air roll, but I feel like directional air roll makes it way easier to put yourself in the correct position, or to make those small adjustments in order to put yourself in the correct position.

    GC 2 here who uses free air roll. The key to good car control is actually becoming comfortable with both free air roll and directional. I use free air roll when approaching aerial hits and when I'm looking to shoot the ball on net, and I use directional air roll for first touches, air dribbles, and half flips. I even use directional air roll to tornado spin last second on aerial hits to give me a stronger hit on the ball. Doing so barely sticks your corner out and get less surface area on the ball. When it comes to gaining flip resets or weird touches on the ball to get around defenders, I use free air roll because it is the most comfortable to me. I actually use free air roll and directional when air dribbling. In order to get the ball where I want it, I use free air roll and then use directional air roll once it is locked on my car.

    Just to clarify for anyone here, free could be harder to master but it gives you a wider sense of freedom, no pun intended. Directional feels locked at which movement set you can do depending on your current movement, with free you can do all aerial styles in one flight if you wanted to. Wouldn't be surprised if all of this would be argued by someone that prefers directional, I think it really comes down to feels, free just feels more in control for me.

    • @To2mo23
      @To2mo23 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      While it's probably fair to say that free airroll lets you have more fine control over the exact movement you make, it's objective that there are certain things you cannot do with free that you can do with directional. Directional airroll allows you to keep your left/right turning mid-air while also airrolling, and if you look at zen's controls he actually has directional airroll bound to his triggers, which allows him to fine-tune the speed of his air roll while still maintaining the ability to turn simultaneously.
      It's generally down to preference, and I think it's still good to have free airroll bound if you're only using 1 directional airroll button, which is how I've been doing it for years, however if I could instantly learn new controls without having to grind new muscle memory, I'd definitely opt to go for how Zen does it, since it seems like the clear winner IMO.

    I’d also like to highlight on Tenacity’s point of “the less you care about winning, the better off you’ll be.” I totally agree with this.
    About a year ago, I used to only play competitive and it would put me in a bad mind state. I would focus too much on my rank, feel pressured to win a game in order to grind MMR and my play style would suffer because of my mind state.
    Ever since then, I’ve turned off ranks and mmr in bakkesmod and have focused strictly on my mechanics, my opponents mechanics and not getting in my own head about what a person may or may not be capable of depending on their rank. I’ve been only playing casual for the last year but I went from being diamond 2 or 3 last year to consistently going against players with GC titles (don’t know what rank I’m playing in) but the skill level is much higher than what I used to play and it all came from just focusing purely on mechanics and nothing else.

      Air roll right - Right stick right
      Air roll left - Right stick left
      Jump - L1
      Boost - R1
      For the same, if not more control. It’s actually crazy intuitive. The only issue is having to put camera swivel on the thumb buttons. It’s cool to use for fun tho.
      Also, one thing to note about L2 is that using break affects how your car reacts when getting flip resets. If you hold R2 underneath the ball on a reset, there’s a split second where you slightly drive forward under the ball which can throw off positioning. If you hold L2, you pretty much break, or get “glued” to the ball. It actually helps but it’s just something to note because sometimes I find not using L2 better in certain positions when making contact on a reset.

If a needed last second direction change to avoid a goalie occurs then do it sure. but if the goals open it will just slow you down. Thats simple logic. ive even seen pros trying to over do things and miss very important shots in tourneys right here youtube. knowledge is knowing how to do an intricate shot, wisdom is knowing when to do it. Listen to his words too, not just what you're watching. Its actually more important

    technically speaking, free roll gives you more subtle control as well as being easy to learn (being able to move the joystick more/less giving you more control over speed of the free roll). Directional input gives you more efficiency (left +neutral left in only 1 press of a button) but you can't control speed. Thanovic just released a video, and people have been putting directional air roll on the TRIGGER. This gives directional air roll the same control as free roll, making it better (only on triggers). Plus you can do a weird neutral jump while twisting, may be a new movement tech who knows. Please lmk if you agree/disagree! Tenacity you need to switch your binds! Lol

    • @tenacitytv_
      @tenacitytv_  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I still use both types of air roll but I used them at different times. I'll use free air roll for small and precise movements and air roll right for control in the air or recoveries

    • @enyraries
      @enyraries ปีที่แล้ว

      @TenacityTv I don't know if I have the patience to make such a big switch but swapping the directional to the trigger could be huge for the precise movements, since youre already goated at it. I loved directional air roll on my left stick for half flips but idk how you do it all the time like that lol.

    • @chamberlan888
      @chamberlan888 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Binding air roll to triggers was enough for me to decide I don't need free air roll anymore. I only used free roll for recoveries / wave dashes since learning directional air roll anyway. There's definitely a learning curve with timing trigger release so you aren't still holding brake / accelerate when you land if you don't want to be but I feel like it's much better for my movement in the long run.

      I can do flip resets and double ones. Free air roll. But they arent as pretty as directional people. GC btw. Issue is, which you'll see; half flips are so much harder. Getting the perfect touch after the reset is harder. If you haven't spent hundreds of hours on free air roll yet, don't. Use directional(coming from someone who only uses free). Alot less strain on the hands too

    Something you're neglecting to do with your free air roll vs directional is you're not spinning the entire time. If you watch your rings, you stop spinning and adjust without air rolling every time you get uncomfortable. I think this is subconscious because the critical physical difference between the two is you need to make small inputs and no inputs for directional air roll. For free you constantly make inputs even for a straight z-axis. This inevitably is slowing down your free air roll speed. Think of it as adjustment then returning to neutral just like letting go of directional air roll. In summary, your skill of a 9 vs a 7 is not really a fair representation. You did mention this, I just wanted to add some specifics.
    I would also like to add for the first test any small change is going to affect your gameplay. I once just decided I was going to pick up more pennies and I immediately de-ranked. As you also mentioned mindset is a large factor in winning and focusing on anything else other than your standard play is going to negatively affect you overall.
    I enjoyed the attempt and just the fact that you have used both and like directional better is enough for me to be satisfied with the results. Thank you for the video!

I never give a peepeepoopoo about win or lose, my lifetime is precious so i play for fun when i can play. i queue immediately for rank because casual is garbo. c2 right now i think although mightve gone back down to c1 at this point idk. Point is, its a video game, i play for fun. Also I barely roll. straight air with minor rolls when needed, it's not pretty but it works for now.

    As someone who's used both directional and free, i can confirm directional is the better one. Been using free for over 2 years and only been about 6 months with directional. I've made more progress in mechanics, rank and general game pace and speed including ball and car control in these 6 months with directional than i had in the 2 years of free, keeping in mind i havent even been spending time in Freeplay for directional whereas i spent hours in training for free. Just my opinion and experience tho, open to hear anyone else's
