Nick R You best bet would be to just work on your reaction time. Reading the defense is all about hyper awareness. That's the main key skill you should learn to be able to read defenses (in a professional sense anyways). It's nothing like being able to shoot the ball, pass, dunk, score, cross over. No, Reading the defense is a completely different skill. It's very difficult and takes a lot of practice. As you can see in the NBA, some of those people can't even read the defense that well. You must be hyper aware. Only true top elite expert professionals have the ability to "read" the defense on a consistent basis. Now, that doesn't mean you have to be able to read the defense that well in order to be a good ball player and out ball other people you play against. But guaranteed, anyone you do play against that can truly read the defense all the time, will always be able to beat you......unless they suck at scoring lol. Hands down being able to read defenders is one of THE MOST valuable key assets to have as a ball player.
