I am a student of Indian classical vocal music, and your videos have helped me a lot. Thank you so much. You are the first voice coach who has comprehensively demystified the whole issue of registers, and how it is not useful to be thinking about them, because they are controlled by muscles over which we do not have conscious control, but urges singers to focus on reproducing the sound they want, and trust their brains to harness the relevant muscles in the throat and around. Have I got this right? :) I was wondering whether you had any more videos focusing on the topic of how to work on improving one's timbre.

Mark, you actually had me laugh out loud on this one! I love the switching of locations. Great way to make an important point. For example, there have been many a gig when I could feel that I may have pushed too hard and during a moment when I didn't have to sing, have done an exercise right there on stage to realign things and get myself back in sync so I could proceed with a loose, controlled voice. No one knew what I was doing and it made all the difference. Great stuff, as usual!

@Camila Hi, Camila. I was very fortunate to study personally with Mark for over 4 years. Not only is he a tremulous guy and a great friend, but he's an incredible vocal coach/teacher. +Jhon Adams Singing is easy, if your going through voice cracks. It's best to lie low and wait. Iv'e wanted to sing but I have really bad voice cracks. I improved by literally using a guitar.
I couldn't disagree more. Vocal cracking is just a tiny slip of coordination - just like when your finger lands wrong on a fret when playing guitar. Do you lie low when you flub on guitar? Nope - you practice more. And that's exactly how the voice improves.
Hi Baxter! I´ve been doing this great Ex as a warm up and recently I´ve noticed a sensation of "inhaling" as I go thru the "mix" range of notes. It can be both by singing in Head voice or Mix. Its a very comfortable feeling but feels more like the air is going IN rather than singing OUT. Is this something you also have noticed? Is the "illusion" because the stomach moves inward as the air goes out? Almost like the voice switches and goes upside down? Haha hard to explain, maybe you can explain it better if you know about this, thanks!
+Rob Lundgren Live Vocals Yes yes yes - Rob!! That's absolutely the sensation you want to embrace. It's simply because your air pressure is truly proportionate and therefore it feels like your singing without doing anything. We're all so used to bulldozing our voices to create a powerful sound (really just us avoiding vulnerability) that it feels wrong at first (almost like cheating) to do so little and hear so much. You found vocal balance - what classical singers refer to as "singing on the inhale." But it's not exclusive to classical sounds - it's all about proportionate energy. Congrats!
+Voice Lesson.com Wow! that was actually what I was going for these weeks, to really find that perfect balance, guess I found it :) Thanks for confirming what I already was thinking! And this is not only for singing, its actually how life works in any area, perfect balance between too little or too much = evolving and growing in a natural way. Perfect Balance + Patience = Success ;)
+Voice Lesson.com Thank you Baxter for explaining this and thx Rob for asking this! I've also experienced this but did not have anyone to ask about it! I'm singing alone at home, with no guidance, just checking a few tips from here and there. I'm so happy!
Have started singing again after 30 years and Mark's videos have helped me discover connection and coordination that eluded me in years of private voice lessons...and it is such a joy to finally be able to vocalize w/o tension! I love this particular exercise! Is it common for it to be difficult? I find that I start to poop out about half-way through. I'm setting myself a challenge to get through my entire range and back again w/o having to stop and rest. Many thanks, Mark!
100% not only the best advice on singing I've ever received, but the most hilarious and clever video at the same time. Does this hold true to do this for even over-used voices ie. too much talking or a demanding gig? How long should one session of vocalizing like this be? How about before a performance? And finally, how many minutes would you recommend people vocalize every day? Thank you so much for the best channel on TH-cam for singers.
Just transfer your questions to another part of your body. Let's use your legs. How long is too long to stand on your feet? What if you have to walk a lot for your job? How long should you exercise your legs? When should you rest? My point is that these are all circumstantial situations that you would have to make a judgement about based on how your legs feel and what is expected from you. I am talking and singing all day every day, and have no fatigue. It's not length of time that determines irritation on the voice - it is the line between use and abuse. Stay on the "use" side and you're good to go all day.
You make me laugh more than some stand up comedians do. I keep cutting my sessions short because of the strain in my neck and throat and have to sing for a new band in a few days. I'm going to use as many as your exercises as I can till then. Thanks for all the videos.
I'm glad my videos are helping - and making you laugh! Try wearing an ear plug (or two) when singing with bands. It's so hard not to push against the volume of a band and that turns on all kinds of unwanted muscles.
"Do this every day and you'll sing better every tomorrow!" --- I like his saying! Do the exercise no matter wherever and whenever you are. Then will see the difference!!!
I love this. It is a very clever way to guide you through some otherwise tedious practice. Thank you Mark. Another obvious way to keep tempo is with a metronome.
Thanks so much Mark for the inspirational, entertaining and humorous instruction. Loved it! Thanks for the different locations. Love shot of Les Invalides in Paris with the Eiffel in the background, I stayed in that area! Just off of Rue Claire.
Love it. I'm doing the 100-day challenge, so I've done this exercise twice. My voice (even only a day later) felt much more relaxed and my range more accessible. Thanks for all your awesome videos!
i got through most of it, but you also keep making me laugh. you're a natural comedien, lol, but I will practicw them on my own. i have definitely noticed a change in my singing quality and I would recommend your singing techniques to anyone who wants to become better at singing.God bless
You said an HOUR? A person should ideally vocalize for an hour a day, before singing the songs they are working on? Is that what you are saying? How much time should ideally be spent on exercises before singing songs? What about this cool down concept? can you help me out here? Thanks..Like I stated before I hurt my voice 2 or 3 times, and dont want this to ever happen again..
That is a complicated question without hearing what you are doing. I would suggest mastering technique at low volume and in your lower and middle chest register prior to attempting loud notes or straining for high notes.
Well, dear Mr. Mark, it is a proven fact that I have derived from your this video that to become a REAL artist you got to have a sheer amount of patience, passion, perseverance duly embraced with deep devotion for a good amount of time and then only one can come out with flying colors. Thanks to you for showing your courage towards your musical conviction and I am with you on this path, too, with same motive. With due respect and honor!!!
The effort you put in this video is AMAZE ❦!

This one really helped me get back on track!
Mark is great. He's helped me quite a bit over the years
Have started singing again after 30 years and Mark's videos have helped me discover connection and coordination that eluded me in years of private voice lessons...and it is such a joy to finally be able to vocalize w/o tension! I love this particular exercise! Is it common for it to be difficult? I find that I start to poop out about half-way through. I'm setting myself a challenge to get through my entire range and back again w/o having to stop and rest. Many thanks, Mark!
Yes - it's very common when working back your voice to need to pace yourself. Be patient - you'll get there!
I was doing really well until I saw you under the bed sheets than I couldn't sing for laughing. Good video . Another exersise to do in my rep, cheers
@@voicelessondotcom The line between use and abuse - point taken. Thank you Mark, I'll be working with your videos daily now.
You are simply the best!!!
Happy to help!
This is seriously a great video!
Thank you My Teacher
You are the best!!!!
Thanks! I'm happy to help!
You're absolutely right! And THAT video would have been a whole lot easier to make! :)
I love you hahaaha you hilarious and a genius :D
Thanks so much Mark for the inspirational, entertaining and humorous instruction. Loved it! Thanks for the different locations. Love shot of Les Invalides in Paris with the Eiffel in the background, I stayed in that area! Just off of Rue Claire.
Glad you like it! It was a lot of fun to shoot!
@@voicelessondotcom I do your "Worried About Vocal Damage" lesson every day when I walk the dog. ..and sometimes vocal fry.
@@Will-Max Good walking with ya!
i want to learn but your method is also kinda funny XD great vid
Love it. I'm doing the 100-day challenge, so I've done this exercise twice. My voice (even only a day later) felt much more relaxed and my range more accessible.
Thanks for all your awesome videos!
You're hilarious and awesome backster

Vous êtes les bienvenus! Maintenant il est temps de chanter!
Outstanding!
Thank you sir
You're welcome!
Welcome to my channel! Glad to help you on your journey!
