I never had considered neuroplasticity as holding any detrimental aspects. Now that I've watched this video, it makes so much sense!
Hopefully the results of these findings can be implemented a therapies to improve the lives of those who struggle with addiction. The possibilities and implications of this are extremely exciting!
    Thanks for another awesome video!

Missus Snarky neuroplasticity is a great way to understand how we adapt to our environment, be it good or bad. The research does look promising, so we’ll have to see once it becomes more widely tested. Thanks for watching. ✌️❤️🧠

@@BriefBrainSnacks I felt the need of a kind of a disclaimer, because I see great presentation of good scientific knowledge of neurosciences, but than I lack all the good scientific knowledge of other sciences that also have a saying about drugs and humans and life, like psychology, sociology, anthropology, and more, we claim new paradigms of interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinary knowledge production.... the paradigm of the complex, open and dynamic systems demands, now more than ever, of a complexity paradigm, less simplicity on substance and effects quick generalization that is very far from real life, and the model is just being tested maybe with limited drugs and limited contexts, and we see many solid findings in psychoactive therapies, first with cannabis, and now with psychedelics and also ketamine and MDMA, both Switzerland and the UK have heroin assisted treatment, Switzerland has projects of conditioned selling of cannabis and another with cocaine conditioned selling, we have all the new markets of recreational use of cannabis, growing, social-clubs in Spain and in Portugal maybe looked at as any other ilegal substance, as an health issue... the promised paradigm would bring also diverse kinds of knowledge sharing with stakeholders, and more important the experiential knowledge, much more human-experience-in-life, but when I look to real community of people that use drugs being invested to participate in all levels that affected in any way their lives, so material conditions for the good participation of community of people that use drugs should have a non-tokenism principle, but looking at the best investment one has ever made when looking at any human, another fundamental area is the policy making, the security forces, the judicial representatives, pharma representatives, we would have then a very complete ecology of knowledge's all focused in present and future better and best scenarios of drug phenomena...

not exactly but im working towards it.
i was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome at the start of this year (after 4 years of therapy with a psychiatrist)
i finally had 2 assessments for asd and was confirmed in february to have high functioning autism.
i have social phobia and general anxiety which is being treated with duloxetine (antidepressant) and diazepam (anti-anxiety)
im currently waiting to be allocated a one on one worker who will be able to take me out for 2 hours, twice a week.
im planning on using that time to exercise at the gym with the goal of eventually being able to go by myself.
i also understand now why i became an alcoholic.
i was unknowingly self medicating and using alcohol to mask my asd and get through my social activities like work and hanging out with so called friends, ex girlfriends ect..
since i stoped drinking i became very anxious and have been spending most of my time at home by myself (and my dog Tess)
however with this diagnosis for autism spectrum disorder im going to start receiving hands on support which is going to allow me to get back on track with my life..

just remember if you are genuinely addicted, to be careful. it can be dangerous to suddenly stop.
      alcohol withdrawal can be fatal.
it's important to taper, either drink less and less to lower your tolerance over time or (best option) go to your doctor and explain your situation.
they can give you tablets which stop the withdrawal.
best of luck to you Vitko ✌️

I ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ that there is a strong focus on the neurobiology of addiction and even more that you’re making it accessible to everyone through your TH-cam videos. I do have a question though. When I hear/say the phrase “once an addict, always an addict I usually think about how quickly old neuropathways reactivate If a relapse occurs. I don’t think of it meaning the brain doesn’t heal but rather it remembers. Sorta like muscle memory. If the person relapses they typically find themselves doing the same old things very quickly. Are there any videos about that?

    • @BriefBrainSnacks
      @BriefBrainSnacks  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Put The Shovel Down I hate to admit this, but I don’t really watch videos about neuroscience and psychology. However, there’s research on this particular topic and I plan on making a video in the very near feature about the neurobiology of drug relapses. Sorry I can’t immediately answer your question but it will be answered soon. ✌️❤️🧠

I always thought once an addict always meant the neural pathways were changed during their addiction phase and this is irreversible as the drug changed the way the brain affects their reward system. Only new pathways can be created to work around and sort of compromise and their old neural pathways would never be the same again

Tip for a struggling addict if you can afford to move country or some place youve never been do it your brain maintains its addiction through environmental ques, if you move to a different country at first your cravings will be severe but if you hold out your addiction will go into remission ive did this recently by moving from Ireland to the Netherlands for a month while your away excercise regularly to speed up recovery

    • @jayjayn007
      @jayjayn007 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I did that too. I left London last year October and moved to the middle of nowhere in South Africa. It's really changed my perspective. I'm half Irish myself, family from Galway county. You didn't contemplate going there too? I've been watching TH-cam videos on Gaeltacht islands off the West Coast of Ireland. They'd also be pretty impressive places to introspect. Saying that pretty happy to live by the beach in a remote place, with a lagoon I try walk around daily. I also deleted all social media and contacts who do drugs. That's helped loads too. How long are you into your recovery?

I used to inhale butane gas as if it were oxygen, I would sit there going through cannister after cannister, about 15 cannisters a day, & that's not exaggerating. I developed major psychosis, I thought people on TV was contacting me in secret code & I were seeing alien craft in the skies! I knew I was losing my mind. I begged & promised my own brain that I wouldn't gas up again, I begged with all my heart that the psychosis would go away, I couldn't watch any TV or listen to the radio or listen to music with lyrics because I was hearing the impossible! I never gassed up again after that. Luckily I think my brain forgave me. The psychosis decreased & went away. I can now watch anything, listen to anything with no I'll effects, I was so happy & thankful. I still have memories of watching & listening to media during psychosis & how horrible the experience of it was, it completely messed with my head.

Very interesting. I battled these issues from high school through the first year of college. I was able to quit early on though and have had many years of total abstinence since. I do Lumosity brain training daily and have done this for several years. Additionally, I exercise daily. I have noticed substantial memory improvements and was able to attain a much higher GPA in college whilst clean and sober and have had success in the job market since graduating. The strangest thing about sobriety is that I have consistently remembered more and more events that occurred during my childhood and phase of addiction. I’m not sure how or why these thing resurface but I believe it is evidence of healing. I do believe my brain has recovered but who knows to what extent. By continuing to use it I am certain I haven’t lost it ;)

Again, we’ll review the literature to see if it has changed since we last reviewed, to determine if these tasks consistently show long term global benefits. Ultimately we defer to the, “if it works for you, then there’s no need to change anything” method. We do, however, ask everyone to practice, as you stated, some healthy skepticism. ✌️❤️🧠

I can't focus as well, my anxiety is worse,my processing is slower, and I probably did some cardiac damage too. It feels like I lost something in my brain since then. It's a scary feeling. But this video gives me hope that maybe things can improve. But it seems like when most people encounter bad experiences with weed they're back to normal again within a matter of days. The fact that I'm not feels really discouraging. I want to see a doctor about it but my parents seem to not care and would just rather leave me stuck with the effects of what I did to myself.

Cuz i would pretty much end up in jail or get car crash. Also im thankfull i didnt had more money for drugs so my brain damage is on some average level. I started noticing changes after half year beeing sober. Its like waking up. Damn drugs i wish i never started.

I think you could try sweeteners as Stevia, at least for a bit? I am not sure though, ask your doctor of course! But my doctor let me know sweeteners like that still give you the dopamine boost cause your brain thinks its sugar, but it should affect your blood sugar less? Either way... make sure to check if you are wanting to try that.. again I dont know for sure. Either way: all the best to you sir!!

All types of sweeteners (artificial or otherwise) trick your brain into believing that they offer the same value. Our brain isn’t able to discriminate between sweeteners, but when they aren’t of value they could have a problematic impact overtime. I understand that the healthiest kind of sweet to consume are fruits. That may be something to look into, but just like MK mentioned, I’m not a physician so seeking out a medical professional would be the best way to go about this.

That’s not possible. Dopamine is released naturally, even during tasks that are sanctioned as part of the dopamine fasting protocol, such as meditation. Lack of dopamine has been associated with severe neurological disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease. Avoiding social media and other stimulating activities won’t stop the release of dopamine, more generally.

Jonathan Hanichak that’s a really good question. Different drugs have different effects on the brain. The majority of drugs used in the research studies that are part of the references in this video were illicit substances, except opioids (not all opioids are illegal although they essentially act the same on the brain). A personalized neuropsychological approach to drug rehabilitation is probably still the best way to treat both cognitive dysfunction and addiction in any case.

I do have PTSD from childhood trauma and working toward recovery from that has taught me that it is a managed condition. It's just a guess, but it seems so is addiction recovery. Also a guess, other brain injury/conditions probably are the same. Mind and body are only 2 health factor in a jangly mobile in motion.

Take well absorbed B-Complex, Magnesium Taurate, Vitamin E, L-Theanine, Multi-Vitamin, Dr. Mercolas's Fermented Beets with Red Spinach Capsules. Handful of Walnuts, and Almonds, and Pecans daily. Drink decaffeinated green tea. 1 Five hr energy drinks daily late morning or early afternoon. The little bottles. They are only 1 dollar at the Dollar tree (not Dollar Store...Dollar TREE) instead of five dollars at other stores. If depression continues to be a major problem take 5-HTP. Also, Ibuprofen(Advil) can help with inflammation of the Brain and CNS. 600 mg twice daily. Do not exceed safe limits of any and all of these supplements. Also, prescription sleep aids and other scripts may delay and or aggravate the recovery process. Research and discuss with Dr. Do not take anything that you are allergic to. Hope this helps. Hang in there...Don't give up. If you fall get back up my friend... P.S. Most of these Vitamins would be good to take with a little food or Milk on stomach.

Because porn conditions men to only react to superhumanly attractive and greedy women. Even attractive women become unattarctive to many men and women sttart becoming more appealing when they are dressed than when they are undressed, causing both parties to be depressed.
So are you informed about examples of full dopamine receptor recovery after porn use?

As a woman this pisses me off.. as a wife it makes me unsettled..as a mother of 2 boys it makes me sad..but I do see the mental issue that you have. What has been caused by constant wiring from our environment (e.g the Grammys). I personally know this messes with my relationship, 18 years together. It was already present when I met him, I never tried to change him. It’s his energy, his issue. When things go badly in the bedroom I don’t feel bad about myself at all.. I feel bad for him. I know the cause and so does he. Medication was given, works but at what cost to his body. Chemicals given to you to cover an addiction that could be rewired.. you know the problem.. you know what it causes. You hate it.. reset. Research Kratom.. our brains are wonderful ♥️👌🏻

I would recommend to allow your brain to fully develop before you smoke any weed. While I'm not advocating for the use of any "mind-altering" substance of any kind, the human brain isn't fully developed until around the age of 25. Some studies do point to lifelong impacts to the brain where people started consuming mind-altering substances prior to the brain being fully developed. Isn't it bananas that the brain isn't developed until this age, but then society is totally cool with kids going to fight in wars, etc.

The only common denominator between all addicts of any social background and distinction is that they are notorious liars. Addiction affects predominantly young healthy criminals. I have been trying to have the discovery of the nature of addiction known for years to end the war on drugs. I would like to help you as a recovering addict and psychologist. Addiction is the psychology of a liar, only liars get hooked and only honesty gets freedom. The tragedy of addiction is children who revenge a childhood hurt, or trauma, against their parents learning from example. Addicts don’t forgive. I am alone socially ostracised by liars paying the price for being honest. I can prove my claim that the obvious truth is addiction is the psychology of a liar dropping mortality rates when my theory is known. It is harder to convince a fool that to know the truth is better than to be deceived than to deceive him.

Hi guys, after nearly a year of using cocaine and with the last 3 months of it beeing an almost daily thing i finally summed up the willpower and removed all excuses typical to addicts( i admit i definetly have become one) to stop. Im aware a lot of things need to be done to resolve this problem but my main question is...should i try and stop cold turkey or should i slowly and taper down over the course of time? Like i said for the past 3-4 months there hasnt been a single week where i havent done atleast 2 grams(sometimes close to 10 even) so im in deep shit with it. I honestly will appreciate all advices and possitive feedbacks. Thank you.

Hey Kristijan, I’m not a clinician or medical doctor, so I can’t advise you on this matter. Please take the following advise with a grain of salt. First & foremost, you wanting to get clean is a huuuuuge deal, & I think you’re very brave for taking this step. My step dad was able to overcome his addiction to cocaine. Prior to his death, he was 6 years clean and led an AA group focused on drug addiction. If he can do it, you can do it, too. Regarding your question to which I can’t advise, I think the method you go with depends on how much withdrawal symptoms you’re willing to manage. Quitting cold turkey will result in the most severe withdrawal symptoms out of those two options. If it were me, I’d probably try the taper down approach. Regarding less “severe” drugs, I understand this approach to be more successful in staying clean over time (but this isn’t the approach rehabs employ). Whatever you choose, i wish you the best in getting off the substance and staying clean. ❤️

Brief Brain Snacks Thank you so much for your reply, the withdrawal symptoms is what frightens me the most about a sudden stop and the risk of going back in this cycle. I will look at all possible options and see how my body reacts. Thank you again.

This may have been helpful had you explained it to people who did not participate in the research that you did. In other words: I have no idea what you said. So no like but I did comment so thanks for the clickbait.

I disagree! I’ve been in recovery for 14 years now and I still have issues from it and have taken multiple cbt classes and worked with a therapist. I don’t believe that the brain is able to be the same as it was before and I don’t see any evidence that the addiction ever fully goes away.

What substances were you taking before recovery? I long were you an active user? I'm worried myself about this. Hoping exercise can help kick-start my brain.
