I don't know what it is about The Front Bottoms, I'm not sure if I even like their style of music or the guy's voice but they make me feel so nostalgic or something. There's just some certain emotion their music makes me feel and I can't pinpoint what it is, but I love it.

This song has always got me but this part in particular. Because I remember when I first came out to my bio parents as trans and cut my hair my mom said that I was a disappointment and constantly behind me too change. And eventually my birth parents have me away.
It just hits hard.
For me it was because I was gay and when I came out (after a failed suicide attempt) my mom told me to pray and change and my dad kept trying to convince my mom to send me back to Saudi Arabia cause he was convinced I was being influenced by Canadian culture. Later when I grew out my hair he kept pestering me to cut it and everytime it would hurt.

I recently got out of an abusive friendship, so I can sorta relate. I understand that it's really hard to not go back to them, especially when they're trying to reel you back in. that lyric to me is so flipping relatable. like, i've been in both positions, both just so so desperate to leave everything and everyone you know and escape into the unknown and also to try and keep someone you love with you, instead of having them leave to a place where you won't be able to fully love and care for them. there's something heart-wrenchingly beautiful about that i think, to have two different people with such strong emotions in one setting.

I first heard this song from my ex the first night I met him. He was one of the talents for karaoke night and I remember thinking, 'dammit' when I first laid eyes on him. He was exactly my kind of poison that I couldn't resist. Decked out in all black with a leather jacket and the lightest blue eyes. Obviously always had a thing for a sad guy with a guitar. Little did I know that I would be with him for two years and by the end of it all...I also shared that sentiment. It was more of a beautiful omen than anything else. I think it may be about LGBTQ+ people not being accepted by their family and peers for example the lyrics “when they close their eyes and prayed you would change”is people trying to “pray the homosexuality out of someone”or the lyrics “it’s no big surprise you turned out this way.”is probably parents looking down upon the way their child turned out also the lyrics “and they cut your hair,and sent you away”might be about a trans girl who was not accepted so her parents sent her to LGBTQ+ conversion therapy/kicked her out.
