  • Do you catch the open strings when slurring across two strings, when using the same finger on both strings? Try this simple exercise every day for a week to see fast results and stop catching open strings during string crossings forever.
I am offering online lessons from July 2024. Please get in touch if you want to book. Spaces limited.

STRING CROSSING EXERCISE (to prevent catching the open strings when slurring and crossing the string on the same finger):
    USING A SLURRED BOW in first position - A & D strings:
    1. Play the first note (3rd finger D on the A string)
    2. Stop the bow (apply light pressure so that the bow doesn't move - don't take it off the string)
    3. Tilt the bow to the D string (keep applying pressure so the bow doesn't move)
    4. Move the finger across to the D string (3rd finger G on the D string)
    5. Play the second note using the same bow direction as before because we are slurring (3rd finger G on the D string)
    6. Stop the bow (apply light pressure, don't remove from the string)
    7. Tilt the bow (whilst continuing to apply pressure)
    8. Move the 3rd finger across to the A string again
REPEAT FROM STEP 1 IN THE OPPOITE BOW DIRECTION
See if you can repeat this for 2 minutes a day for one week. Once you've got the hang of that, try different string combinations (A&E / G&D and change the finger you use to 1st, 2nd and 4th)
Let me know how much progress you make in the comments.

I'm not a pro. But I do know afew things. It could be the incorrect arc at the top of bridge. Or incorrect depth of nicks. Or the spacing at the bridge might be off. I embrace the imperfections of my hand carved blanks. If you will find a good lutier he or she, may be able to help you. Sometimes I just reach with whatever finger to deaden the sympathetic string. Don't let it bother you. Hope this helps.
