A lot of these shows could’ve worked in a college setting. There is no reason why Euphoria couldn’t take place in a university. It’s very annoying to see a show with an amazing plot but it takes place in a high school.
I say this ALL the time!! All the plots can easily be geared towards college students but they continue to have it center around high school students when it’s heavily unrealistic
@@ToniBryanneTV apparently it's because it's based on Sam Levinson real life, and he was an addict in high school. Also the show it's fairly realistic, sadly. Im in awe by the fact people went to amazing school district in which thid did not happen.
I think it's because everybody goes to HS but not everybody goes to university. They believe that by setting the shows in HS, more people could relate to it
Honestly shows like Euphoria would just make so much more sense in a college setting. Moving away from home, dealing with trauma, finding your identity away from your family, figuring out what you want in sex / relationships are ALL more telltale traits of college coming-of-age stories, not really highschool ones (and since I've been online schooled my whole life, it extra doesn't apply to me 😅)
there's a documentary a young youtuber did that I highly suggest, It's called Hollywood's Predatory depictions of women and children in cinema and the youtuber is called Final Girl Studios. It makes you really think, and it's terrifying
Kim Possible and the Proud Family omg!!!!! I grew up on the tail end of those shows so I did watch Pretty Little Liars (which did have a TON of problematic age gap relationships) but it was nothing like Euphoria tbh
They did a good job keeping Degrassi realistic but I do remember there being a lot of objectification and sexualization of underage girls as well in there
@@meliloves_jesus really? I know Manny was hypersexualized but that was bc she was the school 403 and she wanted to be seen that way until later on when she changed her mind. Was there something else i missed?
@@bfjohnsoncbk i remember an episode where Emma lifted up her dress with nothing under and showed a crowd while still being a minor and everyone was very supportive Since she did it to prove a point but truly I felt like it wasn’t needed
Love this. It was always strange being 14-16 having grown men preying on you and then shows showing sex in teens like it’s the thing to do. And if you aren’t you’re missing out. SMH 🤦♀️
Exactly, I realized how crazy this was when I was 14 years old on a walk, hoping that a middle aged man was catcalling me instead of my 11 year old sister next to me. It’s just so disgusting.
This is why I prefer anime, where shows that don't seggsualize the youth. Bleach, One Piece, Inyuyasha, and slice of life anime like Your Lie in April.
I'm tired of coming of Age stories stoping at 13-18 as if life and problems end after high school! Can we get a series of what's it's like being 21-25 I feel like the adult shows we do have always take place with the characters being in their mid 30's! I'm over it.
I agree. It seems the shows are either for young teens or for Middle Aged and over. It’s the same with movies. There used to be movies for those in their twenties but today it still feels like it’s missing.
@@rocioosunabeltran9227 I’m the same age so I know exactly what you mean. There’s so many ways being in your twenties looks and it’s different than from the past that even older adults don’t have a clue how to guide us
Degrassi actors were actually teens when filming. That was the whole point of the show! Teens playing teens and dealing with things that happen to them in real life. Of course it was exaggerated but the creators wanted it to be relatable to real kids.
Came here to say the same thing about degrassi being teens within a year or two of their age. But it definitely was exaggerated in terms of drama. Those incidents would happen in schools but not all at once!
@@MusikGirl23 in the Manny case she was a year younger than her age until season 6 when the format changed from seasons representing a year to a semester.
Personally, I had very ✨weird✨ adolescent years (13-17), which included constant clubbing, drinking, doing hard drugs, hooking up with guys who were WAY older than me etc etc. So, when I was watching these shows when I was underaged, I didn’t find anything problematic or wrong with them. I’m an adult now and I believe that all these things should NEVER be romantisized or portrayed in a “cool” manner because in the end my mental health went downhill and my body was constantly struggling. All these “fun” activities completely wrecked my perception of life and ruined all my family relationships. It took me almost two years of therapy to finally get better. And don’t get me wrong, partying/having active sex life is ok, but if you’re a teen reading this, please, wait until you’re mature enough, don’t ruin your childhood in order to impress people around you. I’m really grateful that more and more people start speaking out about this issue. P.S. Having romantic partner who is 5/10/15/20 years older than you when you’re underaged is not cool, he should probably be in jail now
How were you clubbing, drinking, doing drugs and sleeping around at those ages? Even with a fake ID no club would let a 13 year old in, and unless your parents were nonexistent (which is possible, and if that's the case I'm very sorry), how were you allowed to be out that late all the time?
@@fuzzypanda1684 I didn’t start clubbing and doing drugs at 13. It only started with few bottles of beer with my friends. Everything was progressing slowly. My parents were present, but they were going through many hardships themselves (the environment at home was also very toxic, which is why I moved out at 16) and they didn’t really care if I spent all my free time with friends or had lot of “sleepovers”. My parents really only cared about my grades and they were rather decent at the time.
I was about 2 years late on the Euphoria hype so I was blown away at the first episode. The amount of nudity and the fact they were supposed to be in high school blew mind, I had to turn it off.
I have never watched euphoria but the way my classmates were so obsessed with it mada me feel left out. However, after doing a lot of research I was very horrified as to why are they having so much sex and nudity, when they are teens...my goodness
I'm a teen who has never been offered alcohol or drugs so I find these shows supper unrealistic. Not only that I've spent so much time trying to find my gender identity and sexual orientation. When I finally decided to come out as nonbinary and asexual. Many adults around me always say. "You're not ace you just need to find the right partner" but the thought of sexual situations discust me.
Many of ym friends smoke,do drugs, to vape, but only one ever offered me weed. I do find most if these super unrealistic though. Not everyone is busy doing drugs 💀💀
@@snail7722 I wouldn't call not doing those things as being behind. Not a race and some teens are neurodivergent or have a proclivity to addiction and are aware of this--drugs and alcohol aren't a good idea or fun time with this knowledge. especially since alcohol is very much a depressant and worsens symptoms. It shouldn't be normal to have older plugs hooking you up with hard stuff as a young teen, it's just normalized and common. It's not the symbol of the quintessential teen experience.
it think it also depends on where are you from. now in my country is kind of normal for teenagers and young adults to smoke weed and drink alcohol. i was offered a lot of times but i always refused weed and cigarettes (bc i can't stand the smell lmao) but me or my friends never were into hard drugs, i can tell you that. i have adult family members who are addicts and i know some people who are now in rehab but people who are full addicted to hard drugs (specially teens and young adults in school/college) are not that common. because in my country if you're really struggling with addiction at that age is very probable that you aren't even attending school or that you're homeless. and if you're rich of have a lot of money you'll not be doing drugs everyday, it'll be just 'recreational use'. i live in a area that has a drug problem and i have never seen a teen with an obvious drug problem attending school. weed is one thing, but even that doesn't leave you totally knocked out like other drugs do. my point is, the drug aspect can be realistic depending on your situation. i see people with addiction every fucking day in my town. specially with alcohol. lots of homeless people struggle with it and if you live where i live is quite normal to see. i'm from chile btw, south america (+mexico) has a big problem with drugs and addiction, it's really bad. everyday i hear fireworks alerting that there's more drugs and people are so desperate for money that the delinquency levels has gone up, it's very unsafe. i even suspect that one of my neighbors might be selling something bc i see people coming there so often it's weird.
I was just reading a Twitter thread last night that made some really good points about this topic. They mentioned the lack of options for teens today whether its online, on TV, places to hang out in person, and in the clothes they shop for. Instead they're just thrust straight into consuming content that's really meant for adults and makes them want to look and act older than they really are. Specifically speaking of TV, I'm 26 and I feel like when I was that age we had actual TEEN stars and shows that were age appropriate (Think That's So Raven, Lizzie McGuire, iCarly, Degrassi, etc.). I know Disney Channel still exists but I feel like it's more targeted towards younger kids now so it's not as relevant. And yeah there was still bad influences back then (like Teen Mom, Jersey Shore) but we still had age appropriate options. I didn't feel the need to dress/act older because I had role models that weren't acting that way. Now I see these girls posting online who look like they're my age only to find out that they're only 14, 15, or 16! It's madness! Not sure what the solution is, but it's sad and quite disturbing.
ABC family at the time had different shows for teens that came from different genres such as 10 things I hate about you, make it to break it, Jane by design. I remember even watching the Carrie diaries on CW because it was also centered on teens but with the time period being the 80’s. I feel back then the topics of sex were still there but it honestly seemed age appropriate. It seems writers today literally seem lost with actually talking about these subject matters and always resort to the extreme.
Oh girl, the damage that’s being done in this generation…. Small kids with cocomelon brain rot, teens feeling the need to be sexualized from shows like gossip girl and euphoria. The doom scrolling from apps like TikTok. I don’t know what the solution is either, but it feels like there’s no hope.
I’m so glad you talked about this. I think it’s SO weird that grown men wrote these shows and made these characters so promiscuous and they were teenagers. One character that upsets me in particular is Serena Vanderwoodsen. The fan base hates her but really it’s the writers that made her that way, i personally always wanted her to be and do better but they literally made her date grown men and share her body AND do substances. I felt like it wasn’t fair that Blair was “pure” and they constantly made jokes about Serena being “free” but never ever went deep to find out why a teenager would have that many unhealthy relationships. Her and Blair needed to be in therapy lol.
Thanks for speaking about this. As an asexual individual, seeing these types of shows always Made me feel weirder in my teenage years, like I was broken for not wanting to have sx yet -and more than that, pressured to. When you're a teen it's hard to understand these things and these feelings.
someone brought up a really good point that there’s not enough content for teenagers these days. shows marketed towards teens like 13 reasons why and euphoria are really explicit/sexual, and everything else is for 10 year olds. There should be more wholesome shows (like Heartstopper, Degrassi, Boy Meets World, etc.) for people between the ages of 13-18 to watch and enjoy. it’s like all the TV-MA shows are for kids these days.
I hate how these "teens" are played by 30 year olds. I didn't realise this or think it made a difference when I was a teen, and felt bad how I could never compare with these beautiful, mature "15 year olds"
I am a teen and all these shows make you feel wrong if you are not out right sexual and not in a sexual relationship. Love you so much and all your opinions ❤
I’m soooo glad this is being talked about!! I’m currently rewatching pretty little liars as a 23 year old and they’re literally 16 years old and one of them is dating their teacher and the other ones older sisters fiancé got with her (the 16 year old) and SHE was made out to be the bad guy for breaking them up?? Like he wasn’t a perv?? And apparently the same thing happened with another fiancé before so she would’ve been even younger!!🤢🤢🤢
I told my friends I felt uncomfortable with how many Rated R scenes was one Euphoria bc they’re supposed be teens and they was like I think it’s okay bc they’re adults
Elite is one of the series that comes to my mind when watching this video. Most of the sex scenes were pointless and I would always like skip them or feel uncomfortable watching it. I'm 25 now and when I was 16, 17 and even 18 I never felt the need to sexualise myself nor did I feel the need to act older than my age.
I agree with all the points you've made, especially about age. I was constantly questioning why I don't look grown and I felt that I didn't fit the 'standard' for teens.
When I watched euphoria I shook from how they use teens very sexual, it’s was sad and disgusting to continue to watch it me as teenager , and the same thing to adults show (game of thrones) ……
My asexual self growing up not understanding the whole sexualizing thing & being grossed out by sex scenes. Teenage targeted shows really seemed fictional to me until my friends were like haha relatable. .-. Edit: my favorite teen based show is Legacies. Which the main love interest literally died after they did the devil's tango.
I hear ya! Asexual 32 yr old here (try getting some doctors to believe you’ve never even been on a date at 32…). I know it’s a normal healthy part of life for most people to have sex etc, it’s just not part of my life :) I wish 12+ me (until mid to late twenties in all honesty) had been told that asexuality was a thing and totally normal and okay for a subset of the population. I played along with things in terms of saying I liked boys, making up crushes because I thought it was the thing to do, when really, it just make me feel even more awkward than I already was. Fortunately I was at a private school where abstinence, while not required or anything and we were taught about safe sexual practices etc, was promoted so I didn’t feel AS weird, especially as most of my friends graduated high school never having had sex as well as me. Try explaining to doctors or other health care professionals that at 32 you’ve never even been on a date let alone had sex and you’ll get a little bit of strange looks going on. But I’m happy with where I am. I suppose it’s *possible* that the right guy might come along and change how I feel but I don’t think I give off the vibes of wanting to be in a relationship so it’s less likely anyways. A close friend noticed in my twenties that she had never seen me flirt at all. Guess I just don’t pick up on those cues.
@ibrahimihsan2090 Well, it's all opinion based. Legacies were definitely targeted more towards late middle school and early high school age. It's good if you remember it's not for adults. I mean, I liked it. Some of the plot I could live without, but overall, it wasn't bad. If you liked The Vampire Diaries & The Originals, it's a good continuation of the story. It includes some characters & plots from both shows before it.
I am a very young looking 26 year old person (afab), and I do very much look like a teenager still. The amount of times I am stared at or cat called while simply existing by some crusty old man is horrific. Kids need to be kids, and kids need to be portrayed as kids. If I don’t have my tattoos out, I expect stares, and it shouldn’t be that way.
It just makes me feel so so sad seeing all these young kids being influenced by these shows and growing up TOO fast!! I’m an adult now and wish to be a kid again, being grown is no fun and I wish these kids and teens don’t feel so rushed to grow up and experience all the good and the bad so quickly 😢
I do have to say as a teenager, I definitely over sexualized myself and so were other people and it led to every single one of us being in bad, regrettable situations. If shows like this are going to exist, they need to focus more on the consequences, the emotional damage that can come from acting “grown”. Because a lot of my friends and I look back at that and just think “WTF”
I love you point about objectifying women for the male gaze, because we women literally don't need those types of scenes to be entertained or to follow the plot. Its just too much
So just give women what they need, in a show that’s for men and women? Bc I speak for the men when I say we don’t need the romance bullshit🤷🏽♂️ more ass and innuendos😂
This is such a HUGE problem. I remember vividly the constant fear I had as a teenage girl being so visible to everyone because of how people my age were being portrayed. I stayed a virgin until my first long term boyfriend in college because I was simply too scared to go there. I was so confused about my feelings and about sex in general because there is way too much sexualisation of teenagers and not enough EDUCATION for teens about how to understand it all and how to navigate it safely. I remember a guy I casually liked in school who wanted to have sex with me and I felt attraction towards him but was way too scared to do anything. I thought about how nice it would be to be able to explore sex without fear like he could.
So glad this is being talked about! There's a difference with having a teen doing all these things because its related to the plot and message compared to obviously having every character normalising these behaviours. When I was a teen I was cringy as heck and still watched Cartoons instead of "grown up" programs that were popular - like Pretty Little Liars. Teenagers are between children and adult and need to start being treated as such.
I'd just like to thank you for calling it out for both men and women. Everyone ignores these things happening to young men. Side note; I miss The suit life if Zack and Cody and That's so Raven.
To be honest I think it is unfair that these things happening to boys too is ignored... But people tend to think that boys can "take advantage" of a woman's love while for girls they can't really benefit from older men because in the end, the girls get the hurt. That's why.
great video as always. i think another similar vein here is folks who make tv shows that, for all intents and purposes, are made for teenagers - and then NEVER consider the fact that their audiences have don't have developed adult brains. i was maybe 15 when 13 reasons why came out, and the surge in "revenge suicides" and negative stigma around mental health was horrifying, all because producers assumed we were grown enough to know that what the main character did was wrong.
Teen Wolf, Euphoria,On my block made this worse and in high school my classmates stated that Kim Possible needed to look older and not her age, thanks to harriyana hook I got educated on this.
I grew up on Australian Heartbreak High from '90s, and although there were some episodes that revolved around teen sex, it was never never explicit! And it was never shown as sexualization of children. The series worked with many topics about life and growing up from teen standpoint and it was done really well. Even though a lot of actors who played teens were adults they were still dressing more as teens, had "invisible" make up and normal not to done hair. There were even some teen/adult romances but they also showed how many problems might arise and how bad consequences can be for both involved. I don't know, it seemed much more appropriate than this today. In Euphoria, "teens" wear like a tone of make up with false eyelashes, nails, high heels and tight glittery dresses that would make adult movie stars blush, and they wear it to school! And they seem never to have parents or have totally incapable, problematic parents! And male "teens" like Archie have chiseled face of 30+ year old. The fact that actors playing children are full grown adults still doesn't make it all less creepy. Just put the movie or series in college for God's sake!
Yet they will never think about becoming college students. It always has to be about a 15 year old girl dressing up like a professional stripper and prostitute…like lmao. Do you know that is so unnecessary and just straight up inappropriate. Most 15 year girls do not dress up like strippers.
Thank you so much for making this video. I feel disgusted when I watch a lot of movies and shows and it seems like it only bothers me. This helped validate my feelings.
ABC family (now free form) had a ton of teen shows such as 10 things I hate about you, make it or break it, Jane By design. There were even an array of summer movies dedicated to teens. The CW also had the Carrie’s diaries centered around teens. I remember even watching the Australian teen drama Dance Academy. Nowadays everything seems to be exaggerated on tv. At least back then teens came with different storylines and different issues and genres. Now everything today for teens has to be the genre of euphoria.
A good "teen" show that does lightly talk about a few of these things but isn't the whole plot of the show is called PEN15. It's so funny but also relatable in showing what it was like for alot of us as teens in middle school. It is TVMA and it's set in early 2000s. Also I'm a newly subscribed viewer and I love the topics you speak on 💕
When they WANT a teen to actually look like a teen, they find someone like Bella Ramsey. She’s 19 and looks very believable as a 14 year old. Like they know what they doing
what I hate the most is 1. for me personally I know I went straight from disney channel to netflix because this was before like the age of disney plus and I was getting too old for it. So I went from stuff like Jessie, and stuck in the middle to Supergirl and Green Arrow which is a HUGE jump that I think is happening more now with streaming services and there not being much teen and tween content anymore. 2. Even thought I've graduated high school I'm waiting to "look like a teen" because I see 20 something's playing teens with flawless skin and keep waiting to look like them when I won't for several years because I am an actual teen 3. not me personally but these shows are marketed to teens, so like 14 year olds who'll see a senior that likes them or god forbid a teacher shows interest then they'll see things like Aria and Ezra and think it's ok and not dangerous, abusive and all sorts of horribleness
My only thing is parents need to not let kids/teens watch some of these shows. Euphoria is literally a show rated MA. It doesnt matter if they are in highschool or not. The show is NOT for highschool students lol. Shameless is rated tv MA. It is not for kids.
I don't understand why they couldn't set Euphoria in like college, where these characters would be adults. Bc then it wouldn't be 'edgy' enough? Or bc Hollywood likes to imagine teens in sexual scenarios so much?
Honestly I've always hated that adults play teens in these films. It gave me and many others body image issues, because we didn't look like that at 15/16
I remember as I was entering my teenage years, I was so excited about going to parties, getting drunk, even having sex at some point. I feel like another factor that determined my wish to ‘let loose’ in high school was not just these sorts of shows, but of stories online where people would talk about their sexual experiences in high school (think of the Reddit stories nowadays). I felt so jealous that I wasn’t living in America in the 80’s and 90’s (where most of those stories came from), and I yearned for those experiences in high school, which now that I look back on it, is extremely unrealistic for the time and place I was in.
Had boobs since 4th grade. Been cat called since 4th grade. Its a fucking problem. Thank you for educating cause it blows my mind that some people dont consider it a problem.
I’m in my mid 20’s and haven’t even watched more than the first few episodes of euphoria while my siblings who are 6 years younger than me have seen the show. Whatever gets popular on tiktok so many young ages will see that and want to hop on the trend. Forgetting how old they are and that they shouldn’t be watching a highschool girl sleep with someone’s dad
That’s why as a writer I stopped writing stories that take place in high school. For this exact reason and also because I’m 22 years old, I can’t relate to the mindset of someone in high school anymore. I think a lot of these shows have a unrealistic expectation that every single kid in high school has a sex lite because most certainly I DID NOT lol. Now when I write stories the characters are between the ages of 20-25.
Same here. When I started writing in my late teens to early 20s my stories and their characters were in High School because alot of my inspiration came from anime, Smallville and shows mentioned in this video but in my mid 20s I experienced a huge mental/creativity block and it's only when I aged up my characters to adulthood with referenc3s to their early lives being relegated to flashbacks and prequel short stories did the creative flow resume..
I feel like (as a high schooler) the shows should just focus on struggles in school, extracurriculars after school like drama, clubs, etc, and pressure of grades. Also hanging out with friends at the mall :)
the cast of degrassi were actually the ages they portrayed on the show for the most part. when The Next Generation premiered Cassie Steele and i were both 13 years old.
Actually this is most American shows, teen or otherwise, I'm sick of all the sex, they don't even try to allude to it, we have to watch a whole sex scene, I got to point where I actively have to skip those parts
i always said I couldnt get down with Euphoria because it makes me uncomfortable --- if it was a University based show, prob a little more okay with it.
Yes this really needs to be talked about more cause I'm 15 in 10th grade and watched all the shows you mentioned in this video before I even got to high school so when I first started 9th grade i was so confused on how everyone still looked like well kids not all matured and stuff cause watching these shows i thought I would immediately look like that when i entered high school and would be doing things like that and I'm not saying it don't happen at all cause a lot of the kids i go to school with well they vape mostly a few actually smoke blunts and stuff but watching these shows really had my view of high school messed up.
Hollywood showed us that we should have Sex in the age of 14-16 and if not, were missing somethink so incredible, and that we aren't Too young or that we should want it. And getting 20+ years olds for Teens is so unrealistic, they should have Seat more thinks in College
love your videos! i will say though, Degrassi was one of the only shows that actually casted teens to play teens. i feel like most of the cast looked their age and that really helped with a sense of realism. i’m not sure Manny would’ve been able to wear the things she did lol but it fit her character so i think they get a pass for that one. Degrassi (at times) was really good at showing how teenagers really talked, acted and dressed so i always commend the writers for that. as the show went on i think they lost their touch of realism and started to “adultify” their characters a little bit but the beginning seasons are pretty spot on. that show has its problems but it’s definitely one of the best when it comes to accurate portrayal of teens!
Yes, I agree to all of the above. I think it exaggerated how much drama would be going on at once, but I never thought it was something that couldn’t happen.
I'm 23 and looking back at certain shows is very cringe. Most of these TV shows were my earliest glimpse at relationships and I thought that stuff like sex in high school was normal. It's just crazy to me that very adult things that I'm going through now were put in my face at a very early age. PLL is the show I have the biggest problem with relationships with older men and younger (teenage) women. They really wanted to make Aria and Ezra normal. Lol let me not rant but I don't get the obsession
I grew up in Canada in the 80’s so we had old school Degrassi. Awesome show that dealt with tonnes of teen issues using normal, sometimes homely, teens. I know the newer versions are not the same and it’s too bad no one will go back to that formula.
That’s why I don’t really consume teen tv shows cause it makes me really uncomfortable or just don’t relate to them I relate more to animated movies or shows but that’s just me
I haven't even finished this bus you asked the question about your favorite teen tv show and the first thing that popped in my mind was Degrassi it wasn't always about sex or drugs it was about real life issue day to day life as a teen I definitely feel like shows coming out now are only hypersexual towards the youth which is disgusting
I love your channel sooo much i would love to see a video on euphoria cause theres sooo much to unpack and soo many problems to a point it feels glorified when it shouldn’t be especially with maddie
It's a big reason I still havnt finished euphoria. I need time to process. These is kids. Teens. And in every episode there's intense sexual content. Like no prep. U go to a sad scene to immediately ppl doing the nasty. No prep no nothing
The Degrassi kids looked their age. They had some wild moments but it didn’t seem like it was aimed at an adults gaze. It was more like an after school special without the overly preachy judgement
For my favourite show/movie that revolves around teens, it involves living in the sewers, being mystical ninjas and having a rat for a dad. I'm turning 16 next month btw
The thing that bothers me the most about Euphoria is Rue’s mom never tries a different approach for treatment or simple things like suboxone(MAT). That show could introduce a generation of people that will struggle with substances more science based treatment but they are just stuck in AA(Smart is another option). Plus in AA, CA, NA etc you NEVER have a sponsor of the same gender.
yes! these shows, the netflix sabrina series, the mtv scream series, the 100, and many others all have teen characters written as the leads holding adult responsibilities. on sabrina they just made them immortal teens and that basically gave the writers the idea that they could have these kids do anything adults do because they're 16 a lot longer than a mortal...uuuhhhh....ok....
I'm glad we are talking about it. I'm glad their also starting to cast ppl that look more like teens or who ate teens. Cuz them 30 year Olds they were casting in the teen wolf days were insane. I
Sasha Pieterse who played Alison on “Pretty Little Liars” was 12-13 in the first season & had a naked scene. Plus she had love scenes with Shay Mitchell who is 10 years older than her. The scene I’m talking about th-cam.com/video/oKWBpPooLYQ/w-d-xo.html
I was 17 when I started watching Pretty Little Liars and Gossip Girl. I’d have to skip certain parts that involved sex if I was watching on the family computer or on my Wii in case my parents or my younger brother walked in.
Could you/have you done a video about conflicting identities? I mean I'm asian but this probably applies to all poc but the west often has different cultures to us, and so to the west we're not western, but to our ethnicities we're too western so we don't fit in anywhere. There is also the different beauty standards too... This has also led to some having internalised racism/being a pick me where they would be racist to their own culture so they can fit into the west and show that "they're not like other [insert your ethnicity]". (I hope this makes sense!! I've wanted to talk about this as I have this identity crisis but I feel no one else will understand, I live in a very white neighbourhood, and also I'm Mongolian and our population is 3 mil which is very small so we have very little representation and every representation we have is very.... offensive where we're portrayed as savages e.g. the Huns in Mulan) also sorry for long comment
you should make this video. i don’t mean this in a mean way! but you sound really educated and connected to this topic, so you would probably make a great video too
I feel this topic deeply and how at times it feels we are POC must partake in certain dysfunctional patterns in order to feel accepted even though we are self aware how harmful it is
Kind of like how the main character Devi in the show “Never Have I Ever” is always embarrassed by her Indian culture and sometimes perceives other Indians as dorky or lame before even getting to know them.
I think it’s also very easy to forget about the age of the character when it’s people in their late 20s not to mention how confusing it was when I was the same age as the characters and looked nothing like them
oohh you got me with awkward. i love the show for drama purposes but the characters that these actors are playing are honestly WAY too young to be doing the stuff they were doing. It gives a young girl the impression that thats what teenage life is supposed to be
When you said “Think of your favorite tv show or movie centered mainly around teens, what are the characters mainly involved in?” I said “card games” out loud Oh my god
In some cities these teen girls do get into that type of stuff usually child abuse neglect, some adults really mess them up as kids and teens are in some of those situations for some ppl it’s real

Kim Possible and the Proud Family omg!!!!! I grew up on the tail end of those shows so I did watch Pretty Little Liars (which did have a TON of problematic age gap relationships) but it was nothing like Euphoria tbh

Degrassi actors were actually teens when filming. That was the whole point of the show! Teens playing teens and dealing with things that happen to them in real life. Of course it was exaggerated but the creators wanted it to be relatable to real kids.

@@madibuehlie6144 regardless the situations they were put in was not realistic for MY life but thanks for the input
@@madibuehlie6144 yeah, I think Liberty’s character was also slightly younger than her age.
P.S. Having romantic partner who is 5/10/15/20 years older than you when you’re underaged is not cool, he should probably be in jail now
Well said, spont on!
Hope you're ok now🤗
Just curious. Does it affect your relationships now?
Let’s be honest, after all of the scandals involving pedophilia in Hollywood, shows like Euphoria need to stop
I think Degrassi was one of the OG’s that pushed the boundaries but it was more realistic with their storylines rather than over sexualizing the teens
@Friday I'm in Love i didn’t really sexualize them, just put them in certain sexual situations to teach lessons
My teenage years were full of alcohol and drugs! It’s not unrealistic but there definitely was a group of people that were very behind like you
Many of ym friends smoke,do drugs, to vape, but only one ever offered me weed.
I’m a teen who’s life is exactly like euphoria
@@ritaevergreen7234 Ugh I love 10 things I hate about you
Oh girl, the damage that’s being done in this generation….
Well teenage years are for self discovery mostly... Adulthood fits much more for serious relationships that's why...
someone brought up a really good point that there’s not enough content for teenagers these days. shows marketed towards teens like 13 reasons why and euphoria are really explicit/sexual, and everything else is for 10 year olds.

Teens are no different from children.
So acting grown is them playing themselves.
When I watched euphoria I shook from how they use teens very sexual, it’s was sad and disgusting to continue to watch it me as teenager , and the same thing to adults show (game of thrones) ……

Is Legacies a good show?
Because I know that it's a successor series to The Originala which was a spin off of The Vampire Diaries.
I distinctly remember when Gossip Girl (the original run) was first being promoted and I was shocked that it was based in high school and not college.
You need to discuss the horrible sexualizing of female seiyuus in Japan's entertainment industry
Is it ok if you expound upon it more or link an article or video?
OML yes Japanese men are kinda problematic you can see it with they work like anime

Talk about Sailor Senshi’s. I remember those girls..who are supposedly 10 years old.
They were wearing some…very risqué clothing for their age…

The amount of trauma I have from this😊
right😤😤😤
but think about what led you to WANT to oversexualize yourself.. it was probably the media you were consuming. you shouldnt blame yourself, you know?
Absolutely!
Im 19 and i still watch cartoons. Heck, I've even started making one( even though it was cringe..)
I'd just like to thank you for calling it out for both men and women. Everyone ignores these things happening to young men.
Side note; I miss The suit life if Zack and Cody and That's so Raven.
Me too 😢
To be honest I think it is unfair that these things happening to boys too is ignored...
But people tend to think that boys can "take advantage" of a woman's love while for girls they can't really benefit from older men because in the end, the girls get the hurt. That's why.
Funny thing the amount of catcalling I've been subjected to has dramatically reduced since becoming too old to and no longer wearing a school uniform
great video as always. i think another similar vein here is folks who make tv shows that, for all intents and purposes, are made for teenagers - and then NEVER consider the fact that their audiences have don't have developed adult brains. i was maybe 15 when 13 reasons why came out, and the surge in "revenge suicides" and negative stigma around mental health was horrifying, all because producers assumed we were grown enough to know that what the main character did was wrong.
Indeed... I also felt weird about sex due to the fact that men are predatory on underage girls...
Yeah and how long did any of that last not long
“some of us have the decency to repress those thoughts” 🤨 !?!?

A good "teen" show that does lightly talk about a few of these things but isn't the whole plot of the show is called PEN15. It's so funny but also relatable in showing what it was like for alot of us as teens in middle school. It is TVMA and it's set in early 2000s. Also I'm a newly subscribed viewer and I love the topics you speak on 💕
When they WANT a teen to actually look like a teen, they find someone like Bella Ramsey. She’s 19 and looks very believable as a 14 year old. Like they know what they doing
what I hate the most is
1. for me personally I know I went straight from disney channel to netflix because this was before like the age of disney plus and I was getting too old for it. So I went from stuff like Jessie, and stuck in the middle to Supergirl and Green Arrow which is a HUGE jump that I think is happening more now with streaming services and there not being much teen and tween content anymore.
2. Even thought I've graduated high school I'm waiting to "look like a teen" because I see 20 something's playing teens with flawless skin and keep waiting to look like them when I won't for several years because I am an actual teen
3. not me personally but these shows are marketed to teens, so like 14 year olds who'll see a senior that likes them or god forbid a teacher shows interest then they'll see things like Aria and Ezra and think it's ok and not dangerous, abusive and all sorts of horribleness
It gave me and many others body image issues, because we didn't look like that at 15/16
True. They look too Old. When i was 19 i looked 15.
Such a mess thanks for sharing your take 😢
Seriously! Thank you for watching💗
Degassi and Skins are good examples of series that showed real teenagers with teen problems and consequences.
Had boobs since 4th grade. Been cat called since 4th grade. Its a fucking problem. Thank you for educating cause it blows my mind that some people dont consider it a problem.
It is a problem. Even with teenage girls that have the bodies of adult women and get catcalled because of it!
I was just talking about the school girl/ cheerleader outfits with someone. That shìt never sat right with me.
Same
That’s why as a writer I stopped writing stories that take place in high school.

Actually this is most American shows, teen or otherwise, I'm sick of all the sex, they don't even try to allude to it, we have to watch a whole sex scene, I got to point where I actively have to skip those parts
i always said I couldnt get down with Euphoria because it makes me uncomfortable --- if it was a University based show, prob a little more okay with it.
i feel so bad for them 😕
Same
Not to mention in the gossip girl reboot they have teenage characters in love affairs with grown men🚩🚩🚩
Indeed the industry is horrible I always forgot That there teens
@@hanokokun9246 Finally you figured out...🤦♀️
@@missstranger7697 what xD
@@hanokokun9246 The sexualization of underage girls...
@@missstranger7697 yes I know very well about that topic of infantilization of young women thank you :)
I don't understand Euphoria first of all it literally makes everything an "aesthetic" and makes everything sexual the outfits too
If you haven't done this yet, could you talk about the increasing presence of drugs and tobacco products in middle and high schools please? 🥺
love your videos! i will say though, Degrassi was one of the only shows that actually casted teens to play teens. i feel like most of the cast looked their age and that really helped with a sense of realism. i’m not sure Manny would’ve been able to wear the things she did lol but it fit her character so i think they get a pass for that one.
Yeah that was awful. Have to wonder about the people I Hellyweird that thought that was ok to mass produce.
Uhm because it happens in real life
I grew up in Canada in the 80’s so we had old school Degrassi.
I really appreciate that you did this video. Everyone wants to catch the predator but who's inciting the predator. Great work 👍
A Barbie ad just played before watching your video. A story about an escort and it’s the number 1 selling girls toy. Crazy
The Degrassi kids looked their age. They had some wild moments but it didn’t seem like it was aimed at an adults gaze. It was more like an after school special without the overly preachy judgement
That's exactly what it was! The creators wanted it to be relatable to real life teens
For my favourite show/movie that revolves around teens, it involves living in the sewers, being mystical ninjas and having a rat for a dad.
I'm turning 16 next month btw
21:28 I'm glad you put Ben's picture here, people are forgetful.
Teen girls are not “sexual humans”… creepy wording. Teens are humans who MAY or MAY NOT be exploring their sexualities.
They are exposing children…. This is what they do unsupervised by parents or when they come from broken homes
Exactly, thrown girls and women straight in the filthy hole of predators...
I will never understand why Euphoria wasn't set in a university instead
I'm glad we are talking about it. I'm glad their also starting to cast ppl that look more like teens or who ate teens. Cuz them 30 year Olds they were casting in the teen wolf days were insane. I
New set up is incredible. I like the professionnal side of it. Also suits your video style very well 💯💯
Sasha Pieterse who played Alison on “Pretty Little Liars” was 12-13 in the first season & had a naked scene. Plus she had love scenes with Shay Mitchell who is 10 years older than her.
The scene I’m talking about th-cam.com/video/oKWBpPooLYQ/w-d-xo.html
86k now 🎉🎉🎉🎉 so proud of you! I love your channel so much and happy early birthday!
I was 17 when I started watching Pretty Little Liars and Gossip Girl. I’d have to skip certain parts that involved sex if I was watching on the family computer or on my Wii in case my parents or my younger brother walked in.
Yess, I’m loving the new setup Toni 😍😍.
Yay I’m glad you’re loving it!! I think I like it a lot better. Gonna be adding some tweaks here and there lol
Finally early! Thank you for making these amazing videos, they’re very interesting and I absolutely love the new set up. You slay girl
I love her videos as well!
The footage of that little girl smoking at time stamp 21:39 , I think it's Shirley Temple, must be the most disturbing thing I have ever watched.
I think it’s also very easy to forget about the age of the character when it’s people in their late 20s not to mention how confusing it was when I was the same age as the characters and looked nothing like them
first! also i'm so glad you're talking about this, it's such an important topic
Thank you for the support and it really is! This has been an ongoing problem for years sadly
@@ToniBryanneTV it sadly is :( and also ty for replying slhejsjsjsj
oohh you got me with awkward. i love the show for drama purposes but the characters that these actors are playing are honestly WAY too young to be doing the stuff they were doing. It gives a young girl the impression that thats what teenage life is supposed to be
When you said “Think of your favorite tv show or movie centered mainly around teens, what are the characters mainly involved in?”
I said “card games”
out loud
Oh my god
In some cities these teen girls do get into that type of stuff usually child abuse neglect, some adults really mess them up as kids and teens are in some of those situations for some ppl it’s real
Its such a big problem.
Just watched this on your birthday! Happy Birthday Toni!
