They say it's like a crossover between Halo 2 and Halo 3
It's the Helllo 4 of our generation
Nah I can feel the CoD World at War influences but I ain't complaining
Manhunt 2
I heard it releases today
You guys talking about Animal Well?
"...like Tunic, Outer Wilds, or The Witness."
You had my curiosity, but now you have my attention.
As someone who's almost done with the main story, these comparisons are very accurate
As someone who has played 3 hours so far, I strongly disagree. But maybe it gets a lot better soon
@@r6scrubs126 I’m not really sure 3 hours is enough time for any game to compare to those three games. Like, when I was 3 hours into Tunic, it _definitely_ wasn’t anything like Outer Wilds or The Witness.
I've finished the first and second endings. Comparing it to Tunic is not wrong. Comparing it to Outer Wilds is quite wrong. Haven't played The Witness so can't comment.
@@derrickcrowe3888 I do think using generalized comparisons to games is more of a "feel" comparison. How the game felt to you as you played.
But that often doesn't translate well, because how any game "feels" varies a lot from person to person.
So I think it does compare well to the outer wilds, witness, and tunic, because it evoked similar feelings and impressions in me as those games did. But your experience with outer wilds might have been entirely different from mine.
May 9th? That's the day Animal Well comes out!
Yo! Are we talking about Animal Well? I heard it comes out on May 9th.
🍞
@@ivanrzhanoy9389may 9th? That’s when animal well come out
@@zubat2391animal well? That’s like Halo 2 meets Halo 3!
"It's like Tunic, Outer Wilds or The Witness" This is the most efficient sentence you could have possibly said to shoot this game straight to #1 on my wishlist. I'm a sucker for Metroid-brainias.
The Knack franchise took a bold new direction.
You Can very much tell the knack 2 influence in this title
"It's like Tunic, Outer Wilds or The Witness", insta buy no questions asked, clear my schedule and inject that puzzley goodness straight into my veins
Same. The magic words. Good company to be named in.
i think a better comparison would be Halo 2 meets Halo 3
He just straight up named my all-time top 3
tunic and outer wilds? Holy shit two of my all time favourites lol
It's not like those games though, at least outer wilds and the witness, I haven't played Tunic
Note to self; Don’t drink the tap water at Jerry Garcia’s house.
Finally, the world's second strand type game
I know it's a joke, but Rain world is actually the second strand type game
Pretty sure rain world came out before Death Stranding though@@Korinengamecorp
@@VeritabIlIti So... is Death Stranding the second Rain type game?
@@VeritabIlIti It doesn't matter, DS was announced to be the first Strand type game by it's creator when it released, making rain world the second strand type game retroactively.
It's the first well type game
Still waiting for my loaf of Wonder Bread for adding it to my wishlist.
Marty's love of a little guy in a big world strikes again! Great review and definitely a game I'll be checking out.
So you're saying it's a MASTAPIECE?!
Joseph Anderson would be so proud🤗🤗
here comes the moneeeaaaayyyy
It blows my mind how when Dunkeynfirst announced he was getting into publishing, there was a sizeable group of people who thought he would have a negative impact. And it's so incredibly heartwarming to see how wrong those people were. The guys really smart and he's got really good taste. Dudes been gaming his entire life and understands the medium and what's special about it.
I think it’s just a pretty new concept of influencers/youtubers acting as game publishers so people weren’t that trusting. I only know of a German TH-camr called HandOfBlood who also went into game publishing recently. If successful it could be a great concept for indie games in the future I think, a good alternative to traditional publishers.
there's a pretty sizable gulf between being knowledgeable about games and being able to make interesting games
i'm glad he made the jump successfully though
@@prcervihe's not making them though
@@prcervi he's not the dev. My point is that a publisher needs to have a good eye for games, which is something Dunkey has been proven himself to have for years now
I remember people talking about how it would be damaging to indie devs because I guess he’s biased against certain genres? i.e. has personal tastes in games like every other gamer on the face of the earth. That’s how it works lmao. It literally is just more games that perhaps wouldn’t have came to fruition otherwise and to paint it as anything other than cool only reads to me as projecting that you have thin skin.
Also, I find it ironic too as a big Metroid fanboy and being pretty sure he’s lukewarm on most of them that their first published title is not only a metroidvania but seemingly a great one on top of that.
First Hades II and now Animal Well. What a good week! Well definitely be picking up this game!
I've been excited for this game. At PAX last year I saw a booth set up for it and decided to try it because of the Dunkey connection, and I was instantly hooked. Great gameplay and incredibly, incredibly atmospheric.
I'm glad Big Mode came out of the gates strong with their first published title. I'm looking forward to trying it when I get off work tonight.
I was not aware of this channel before this video, but what a nice surprise to hear Marty's voice! Subbed.
This game is better than taco night at James Earl Jones’s house
Great review Marty! Great timing too, as i just got an email from steam saying it was ready to buy, and i wondered if its actually any good, outside of the hype, visuals and Dunkey-ness!
Gotta admit though, that loud background music had me pausing the video a few times cos i thought my neighbours were drilling the walls or running some sort of machinery haha!
EDIT - Wow, only a 33mb download! Thats not something you see every day. My crappy internet thanks Animal Well.
Yeah, the comment section is about what I expected
There is a charm to Marty's High regards (when he does) that just...freaking sends me into a game head first
I was already intrigued by Dunkey's initial announcement and the trailers, but this review sold me. Great work Marty!
Most of the comments for this game is folks quoting Dunkey, I wonder if it'll translate to actual sales.
I'm very interested in knowing this as well.
@@TheCronotrigger1212It will from me
I never would have known about this game if it wasn't for Dunkey, so I think it has to make some impact at least.
Yes it should it convinced my sister to buy it, and personally if I had the money I would as well
Well, you convinced me to buy it. I'm excited to see where it goes.
Genuinely so excited and glad that this exists. Thanks for the coverage, Marty
Bytesized is just such an excellent review format, i love Second Wind!
Can't wait to see the speedruns on this game !
Chilling! Great review Marty! Animal Well sounds like the kind of game that vindicates the entire hobby.
It really makes you feel like Dunkey and Leah will have an amazing impact on the indie landscape
Leah?
@@Gigaheart dunkeys wife, also fun fact they have a daughter together now so dunkey is a dad :)
It has a little something for everyone!
This reminds me heavily of Knytt. I hope people still remember that game (and its sequels); I think it's a work of genius...
I've been looking forward to this one for a while, I'm excited to be able to dive into that well
It’s also a little guy in a big world which we know Marty loves.
Dunkey taking such a big risk starting a whole Publishing company, and the first game to pass through their system getting such high praise from so many reviewers, really bodes well for both the present and future of Indie game development.
We love to see our silly friends winning.
Paused the video halfway through to buy it, the footage and description gave me real strong Fez vibes
Great review, thanks IGN!
Everything about this makes me happy. Happy for Basso, happy for Dunk & Leah, happy that the 3-minute review is back, happy for video games, happy for me.
I'm just happy to still be a gamer in this new dawn of the indie age. The AA and indie space haven't forgot what makes games special, even while all the triple AAA studios not named FromSoft or Nintendo are falling over themselves to see who can make the most Jimminy Cockthroatest Jimminy Cockthroat game
Just bought it cuz of your review and i am pretty happy about it!!
Thank you for existing, Second Wind. Def. gonna look this up
Our boy made it! ❤
Thanks Marty! Will definitely be checking this one out
I'm absolutely in love with this game! It really reminds me of Fez with its cryptic puzzles, emphasis on exploring over combat, and just trying to make sense of the world you are in. The review embargo was really starting to makie me nervous but i'm so pleased that i was proven wrong!
I already knew I'd buy it day one, but for those who don't know Marty's tastes or haven't followed for long: This is REALLY high praise. I was expecting this game to be good, but now I don't know what to expect and that is the best kind of game. I just need to correct 2:36 It's not "Big Brain" outside the box thinking. It's "Big Mode". Jesus.
Just seen this in included with my PS+ subscription. Downloading as we speak.
From your international audience: please put the release date in the intro box in a more obvious format, e.g. May 9th 2024 instead of 5.9.2024 ( the latter of which is may 9th or september 5th, depending on the region)
Or ISO-8601, as in 2024-05-09
That is some damn high praise. I've gotta check it out now.
From the moment I saw the first preview for this, I was hoping it would play at least half as good as it looked. It looks like it's gonna be awesome gameplay-wise too. Super excited for this one now.
I'll check it out!
So excited to see this is finally available to download on PSN 😻
so it's not a jrpg and marty still likes it this much? must be worth checking out
Frost's Cold Take after a week is gonna be like "Animal Well more like Animal Smell"
Reminds me alot of Knytt
YES! that was my first thought too
@@synthetictruism I really need to go back and finish Knytt Underground. The late game is brutal.
@@bewilderbeestie Yeah, I got part way through that on my Vita, but never finished it... I did just dig out my old files for the original Knytt and had a go for 15 mins. Still oozes with atmosphere
What I love about this game is how you can solve certain puzzle in different way. I've used the frizbee a lot to fly around and get to somes places I wasn't supose to be. Excellent game!
I'd be very interested normally, but the art style makes my eyes hurt in a way I can't get myself to look past. is there a way to undo the crt filter and tone down the flashiness on stuff like the firecrackers?
So glad this is living up to my 'spectations
Welp, this went straight to the wishlist.
Seems like a perfect fit for my Steam Deck.
Dat. Music. Well done Dunkster. Gonna buy.
It's available on PS Plus too!
genuinely one of the most incredible games i've ever played
Great game. Already got about 4 hours in. Worth every penny.
The art does look amazing! Broke though so maybe another day!
That sounds like you should definitely check out "Environmental Station Alpha"!
Puzzles and secrets? Are you kidding? I loving LOVE puzzles and secrets!
Like Tunic? No way. Now I REALLY want to play it.
One of the best games in years? Wow.
Great to see this on PS extra day one
Oh I’ve heard about this game, can’t remember when it comes out though. Does anyone know?
Dunkey's game being reviewed on Yahtzee's network. You love to see it
I really hope this gets an easy to acquire physical release
There's no word on general retail release but Limited Run are doing preorders from the 24th May.
So, it's easy to acquire if by easy you mean spending $60 on a $25 game.
"Well" this is nice to hear
oh shit it's finally out. i've literally had this as my most anticipated game since it announced. welp, instant purchase.
Not my cup of tea gameplay-wise but it looks gorgeous
I liked this review
Crow Country review next?
It's comin!
The visuals remind me of the old commando 64 games, but more detail, mostly thinking of Dynamite Dan.
more interesting than meets the eye!
I remember seeing this game in indie world showcase and told myself I was going to get it. Didn't know it was related to Dunkey's publishing company until two days ago. I'm really not in touch with things.
It looks so cute 🥺🥺🥺🥺
Reading between the lines I believe we can figure out that Marty liked the game
Damn, odes this look pretty.
Sounds and looks amazing! However, it makes me think of Rain world, a game i thought i would like but quit after 30 minutes. Just couldn't get into it. Anyway, will probably give this a shot.
Thinking the same thing, and unfortunately had a similar experience with Rain World. Which sucks, because I respect what it set it to accomplish and the style. Maybe I needed a controller...
Animal Well might be more up your alley if you like puzzles and Metroid-likes. I'll try it myself one day or another.
This gives me a Jet Set Willy kind of vibe.
Those are some creative items to use in a game? I wonder if any other game has used a slinky as an object to press a button while giving you time to run away.
The art style kinda reminds me of You Have to Win the Game.
i love the day one review. nice to see second wind and dunkey working together
It's like Ratatouille meets fuckin' Stromboli. Mastapiece
This game is like playing the Outer Wilds at Tunic's house.
WOW DUNKEY MADE A VIDEOGAME?
I dont buy many games full price at release.
I bought animal well full price at release.
pretty steep price tag but glad to see it reviewing well.
This seems like the kind of game Yahtzee would like.
Ever since 2023, the number of excellent games is through the damn roof. I can't play all of them because of time.
I really want to like this game, but the save system has screwed me twice now. If I solve a series of rooms that opens up a door to the next section, please just checkpoint it and keep it open. It's so disheartening to die in a new area and realize I need to go do the whole sequence over again.
I’m confused, I’ve played the game and every time I’ve opened and door and then died, when I reloaded the save, the door was still open
@goober3889 it doesn't seem to have happened all the time. I would say at where I am now it's kept my progress more often than not, it might've just been from some odd sequences where I died unexpectedly.
@@goober3889 seems like certain things auto-save and others don't. I've died immediately after getting eggs and still had the egg in my inventory, but I've also unlocked areas and had to re-unlock them because I died before finding a save point.
Ah so it's like Arac/Spiderbot for the C64 but good
So like a more puzzle/metroidvania Rainworld?
It really makes you feel like an animal in a well.
how do i buy it?
This vs. SMB 2?
Anyone know how much playtime it offers for the average person? The fact it's only 30 mb has me kinda scared to buy it lol
I think the saying that goes "Great things come in small packages" applies. Speaking from some experience, you'd be surprised how much can be packed in to that kind of file size!
You could also try asking on forums for the game I guess
