Downwind Surfski Paddling - How I Catch Runs

  • Last year I put together a bit of an impromptu instructional video for a few of my ultra-keen downwind paddling friends in an attempt to visualise for them how I go about it when hunting runs (skates). It's all about maintaining momentum, reading the water and paddling smart. I hope what I'm saying during the paddle makes sense and that it helps you in some way.......DAZ

Yeah! A lot of insight here. Using the water that you are paddling on is mostly a matter of the integration of sight and feel. In the case of this day there is a quartering surface wave(from the left) to the downwind bigger swell. There is some backwash from the other side from the right at times as well. This is generating some steeper standing waves and faster runs. Learning to see this going on and feeling it going on will in time help you maximize the run by you learning how to present your hull and power it for a particular situation. Simply the more you do it the keener you get. This is easy and forgiving to learn and as many of you have found out, a so fulfilling "re creation" in one's lifestyle. When you hit the beach and end your paddle never forget how blessed you feel then... for it powers a lifetime.

Great analysis Elffirr Design and beautifully described. The art of downwind paddling, seeing and feeling is definately the key and whether you're racing or just cruising by yourself or with a group of friends it is amazing!

Hi DAZ - met you last week at WA Race week (Rod & Todd) . Thanks again for these videos they have really advanced my paddling skills. Well done at the Doctor - it was a tough one! Good luck in the World Championships!! Hopefully some local knowledge will assist.

Thanks, it was cool meeting you guys and I was really happy my videos and advice helped you...........such awesome feedback and a big part of my motivation for capturing the footage and turning it into videos that hopefully entertain, but also give back to this amazing sport. Yeah, the Doctor was HARD but it was nice to get some good downwind conditions for Worlds. Hope you boys had a great trip and will come back next year despite the lack of wind (surely won't happen 2 years in a row 😁).

Totally random question: Was the orange striping a custom job done afterward?? I'm thinking about doing some vinyl graphics/striping, as I'm getting a bit tired of staring at the bright white deck of the Epic!

It was Chris. This was my first Fenn Elite S and at the time, I decided I wanted some colour. Since then, I've gone back to white on my latest ski, but have brought some colour/individuality in through replacing the standard Fenn stickers with custom ones 🙌
