That's the manufacturer's plan: low-price product for those who don't have extra money to spend, high-price product for those who don't care about price, and a middle product they plan on selling the most of because people's decision process is "low priced one is too cheap / bad quality, and high-price one is too fancy and overkill" So the middle priced product is designed to have good profit margins (ie, may not be the best deal for consumer).

In the 25 years I've been building my own PCs, I've always stuck to the 100-150 range on motherboards. I've had a single failure, but it was within warranty and was repaired for free. No way to say if that was because they were cheap, or just bad luck of the draw. This video answered its own question right at the start, then spent 4 minutes in a circle to come back around to the same thing. Get what has the I/O features you need. Also, thicker boards do not always mean thicker traces, but can mean more layers. In addition, a thinner board can actually have superior performance by moving signal layers closer to power planes. This reduction in thickness is from a reduction in the insulating material, like FR4, not by thinner traces. Thicker does not automatically mean better, not by a long shot, and you do a disservice to your viewers saying so.
idk, getting cheapo motherboards at least for me has been a good experience so far, nothing has failed and everything has been quite reliable, even older prebuilts do well, despite having the cheapest everything in most cases and the least of features.
Mama board disciplines all the child components and papa PSU supplies for the family. And then Papa PSU gets drunk off that White Lightnin' moonshine and slaps the Mama board into a "brick" wall.
Then the components have to go to RMA & Associates: Divorce Attorney at Law. Papa PSU says it wasn't a wall she hit but rather just Momma's VRM's acting up. Momma says it's Pappa's degrading capacitors that made him blow up like he did in a fit of rage. CPU Brother and GPU Sister are adopted by new components.
Let's look at my personal experience. I've been owning and repairing computers for ... a while. I've had a lot of parts fail on me. The three most common failures I've seen are: #1> Hard drives. Not the most fair comparison, due to the VAST majority of my hard drive failures being laptops, and rough handling played a major role in most of them. This was a major reason why I was so happy to see SSDs becoming affordable, and I was a major evangelist for the technology in laptops in the early days. Forget the speed benefit, buy an SSD for your older laptop so you don't lose all your data if you drop it! I have one machine that's claimed THREE drives all by itself. Can be resisted with a good solid backup plan, and given the average age of my typical failing hard drive (I've only lost one newish drive), you're probably due for an upgrade anyways. #2> Fans. I've had a lot of old and crusty fans fail. But I've also been able to repair a lot of my failed fans and restore them to operation. Unless it's your CPU fan, these usually aren't terminal. #3> Motherboards. Seriously. I'm saddened by how many motherboard failures I've experienced over my computer-owning life. It's a good idea to put a bit of dollar into the quality of your motherboard purchase to try to help head off this particularly traumatic, sudden, expensive, and *very* computer-ending failure. My first desktop motherboard was also my first desktop motherboard failure. I hated that thing and was honestly kinda glad to see it go. It resulted in me buying an old server grade workstation motherboard, as I wasn't ready for a CPU upgrade, and Intel did an Intel and discontinued my socket. I have another system in my collection that I'm pretty sure is a ticking time bomb before its motherboard goes.
Damn, I never had hardware fail on me ever. I've reassembling computers since I was 6 and never have I ever had any component at all die on me. Once a VERY old hdd stopped working over a bent pin, so I decided to retire it instead of fixing it, and I had a gpu fan blade break, but I replaced the fan so it's working fine again. So far nothing died. Not even 20 year old oem psus
My very first hardware failure was by my GPU, because my parents didn't think having a FREAKING FAN ON THE GPU WAS ACCEPTABLE. Entire GPU burnt itself up and took the motherboard with it.

@@andreiarg i went from a gtx 230 2gb to a 970 4gb and it still kicks ass for me to buy a new one...i dont need a better one yet for 1080p 60fps gaming ..but in a couple of years i think im going for a 2070 for a 1440p upgrade and i will make a new pc entirely because outside of the gpu th rest are from 2013..and i think i will keep the 970 for physix or something

They don't matter as much any more, especially on the AMD side. 95% of consumers won't notice difference. But Intel still segments hard so you're right.
Not worth it, there's a bad board for every chipset. For example the x570GT is rated F on the LTT Motherboard Tier List due to bad power delivery which only support 50A, while the Asrock B450 Pro4 is rated D as it has better power delivery of up to 100A and costs half the price if not less.
You might be right about bad motherboards for every Chipset, but thats not the fault of a chipset. A Chipset does provide features. Those features segment Motherboards into tiers. And that is something I personally think should matter to a consumer. Ofc you are right, it doesn't matter to everyone and most won't even notice the difference, but to those who build their PC by themselfs, which are those this video is targeted at, it should matter. And Chipsets may (depending on the platform) provide the support to overclock. There are Chipsets that will straight up lock overclocking, even though the processor might support it.
Truth be told when I went to buy the board in my current system what I cared most about was having something that was full ATX first and foremost so I had plenty of Sata and expansion ports,(and since I was building in a case with a tempered glass side panel I wanted something that would fully fill the motherboard tray). I also wanted something that had onboard RGB control and lighting as I was also looking to make a flashy system as well. I went with a ROG Strix B450 gaming F because it filled all the needs I had for the build and seemed to be a good value for the money in December of last year and it had a lot of positive reviews.
I would love it if a bit of diagnostic help like buttons and a post code display which are not something only Overclockers need would be on not bonkers expensive mainboards. instead of comparatively useless stuff like RGB, bonkers level overclocking and whatnot.

Personal expirence, never gona buy a high end MB ever again, not because they are bad or not worth, because last one ( ASUS ROG Z270i Strix GAMING) have a problem with their memory channels after some time of use (never OC, buy it most for integrated wifi 5 and bluetooth in a ITX at the time) and asus dont recognize garranty, so i en up buying a cheap msi b250 with a pcie card for wifi and bluetooth. all the original components of the ASUS are still working on the chep msi, and if this one died, at least was cheap.
I have a computer with a first gen i7 with an expensive motherboard that I have gamed on for years and only recently stop using it for gaming, it's now my plex server. I have another computer hats a 4th gen i7 with a motherboard that cost me 89 at the time, it died 1 1/2 years ago, but before it died it went out slowly over 3 months.

I have been running Gigabyte X58 UD7, one of the most expensive mobo of 2009, for 11 years now 24/7. Computers are fast enough in every way, support enough memory etc. that the computer you build today will be usable at least a decade in all but compute heavy tasks. You can buy 2nd hand 3950X and Big Navi later and extend the life of your system. Motherboard is the only thing you are not going to upgrade. I also bought on 2009 one of the biggest/best cases, best PSU, and Noctua NH-D14. Buying great case, great PSU and great air cooler (water cooling is obsolete, best air coolers beat all AIOs) are great investments. Great cases will look great and offer everything you need for a really long time. Good PSU won't cause short circuits, won't break and require work for replacing it, won't have crappy coolers that starts to make noise later, and it produces better quality electricity which is good for all the components. Great air cooler allows better boosting, cooler temps which leads to quite a bit lower use of electricity, which accumulates into real savings over the years especially in 24/7 usage. You don't need to clean the cooler as often, it's more quiet, has more reliable fans. And good coolers have resell value. Good PSU and case can also help with the use of electricity, as PSU will waste less power and produce cleaner power that allow all components waste less, and great case helps to keep components cooler and more efficient.
There is a fluid cooling system that will beat forced air heat dispersion... but it's not the old tube based water cooling. It's 100% immersion, zero fan. Such as th-cam.com/video/PvmMs6mU0NU/w-d-xo.html for example. Pricey, sure... but if the system is properly sealed to keep out contaminants it'll run indefinitely. OFC, making future changes is moot since draining to replace a graphics card, for example, would be a PITA.
I didn’t expect the extra features to be so important when I bought my Aorus Master Z390 beside stably overclocking my 9900k. But I end up using all these features to the max such as Bluetooth 5.0, extra USB voltage modulator (let you increase voltage manually. Great for VR headset and sound equipments). So be sure to check for these extra features that might benefit your peripheral equipments.
If you have a Ryzen 3900x or 3950 you should consider getting a 12+ phase motherboard. Those caps will otherwise go into 120 degree celsius territory, throttle your CPU and may reduce the lifetime of your board. derBauer has a great video about that. I myself spend a bit more on my next board because my system runs 24/7 and I need the long term durability and stability high quality components usually provide.
Today, my X570 Tomahawk seems to be the best bang for the buck mobo. I'm glad I waited for it even though it was the only missing part for my first ever build.
I love how there is a lot of motherboard related videos popping up on my youtube recommended the last 2 days... while waiting to find out what happened to my motherboard I bought a week ago and is a few days overdue delivery... I have a Gigabyte B450M board, it was great with my Ryzen 5 2600, but I recently bought a Ryzen 7 3700X and I can tell you this, the motherboard is very unhappy with the power draw of the CPU, VRM's are getting extremely hot and having power delivery issues because they need to rapidly cool themselves instead of cook to death, doesn't help the upper VRM's have no heat sync at all, and the left side VRM's have one but it may as well not because it just doesn't work. The new motherboard will be the final upgrade to my system (a unless something fails or whatever), since I upgraded the CPU from like I said, a Ryzen 5 2600 to a Ryzen 7 3700X, my GTX 1060 to an RTX 2070 Super, replaced all 5 120mm fans in my case with newer, more powerful fans to blow a lot more air into and out of the case, I have 16gb of DDR4 3200mhz ram so no need to upgrade that for a while, and also added 2tb of extra space to my overall storage, and once it gets here, I will be replacing my current Gigabyte B450M with an ASUS TUF B450-PRO board, from Micro ATX to full sized ATX board, has some real nice heat syncs over the VRM's, and have a few other pretty good looking heat syncs elsewhere on the board, plus a better payout of the SATA ports, and is made with Ryzen 3rd gen in mind so no updating the BIOS to run any 3rd gen Ryzen CPU, can do that out of the box. I also have a be quiet! Pure Rock CPU cooler to replace the EXTREMELY LOUD stock cooler that came with the 3700X... I have never heard a Wraith Prism be so loud in a system before, and has to be, as it can barely keep the CPU cool enough while idle. Needless to say I finally have myself a really decent CPU (once the new motherboard arrives and is installed) and will be building a second PC out of all the spare parts I will have left over (currently the only spare part missing is a motherboard to run the Ryzen 5 2600, which the board I am using now will be the board used in the second system)

When I was picking out parts for my first PC I was originally going to cheap out on my motherboard. I am happy I invested in a better model, cheap motherboards typically have cheap VRM. (I ended up going with an Asus Z370 ROG Maximus X Hero WiFi)
Asus has a quality series of z390 boards for anyone searching for a solid mid-range... Asus Prime z390a ~$170 for base / Asus ROG z390e ~$220 if you want built in AC WiFi/BT5.0 - the bios on their boards is super easy to use and has a high threshold for customization
So as always, build with your specific use cases in mind. If you're just gonna game than a low to mid-tier board would be more than adequate but if you're planning on using it for more than that like streaming or light to medium workstation tasks than throwing the dough at a higher-end mobo might be worth your while.
In my experience don't cheap out on a motherboard you end up pay the same price for two motherboards half the price as an expensive one because of issues and buy a motherboard where there is confirmation for future upgrades like Ryzen or like Intel used to. An exception for a cheap motherboard was for my first build I had an i7 4790k with a $49 motherboard from MSI (brown with blue pcie 16 slot) I don't remember the name but it was a solid built mobo with overclock capabilities
I think the next Ryzen processors are going to use a new chipset as AMD has reached the end of what this one can do. But the next chipset will have a few years of support once they swap to that.
@@jacobgame2757 Ryzen 4000 (Zen3) should still be AM4 and be supported on older motherboards (except maybe A320). Ryzen 5000 (Zen4) will most likely be a new socket and support DDR5 and AVX512.

I got an X370 board (Asrock Killer Sli/Ac) for my original R5 1600 build and now have a 2600 installed in it and it still runs great. I plan on upgrading to a new board and a 3600 eventually but really have no need right now other than wanting a smaller case and ARGB headers. Been thinking of X470 since it's a decent sweet spot of features/price.

Jack doesn't define cable type, I've used RJ45 for POTS, Ethernet, and Serial. All different cables. You'd have a bad time pumping Ethernet at any modern speed through that serial cable
i've blasted thru about 20 mobos ranging from cheap to expensive and the failures were indiscriminate. Of 6 identical machines, three died at 1.5, 2 and 3.5 years while the 3 remaining still work 11 years on. Same batch of boards. In general, top end boards with big PSU and graphics cards failed fastest, and of laptops, the only one to ever fail was a 7gen i7 at 18 months, bad MOSFET. The other 5 are 2-5 gen i5-i7, all fine. My advice is go mid-range for longevity and go cheap otherwise, because chances are it will last as long as an expensive one and its death won't make you suicidal. Possibly interesting: of about 28 machines over 20 years, the mobo was #1 at failures. 75% of mobo failures was trace melting on high CPU+GPU load and the rest were random rubbish components. What I do now is buy cheap and just abuse them (render farm) and for the most part, they take the punishment without issue.

According to google: The average lifespan of a computer is typically three to five years Sure it can last ALOT longer than that, you should expect to upgrade after at best 5 years. Most people would want to upgrade sooner for higher perfomance, but that is a different problem :)
@@ssu7653 Yeah my CPU is over 9 years old (i7 2600, released on January 2011) yet I don't feel the need to change CPU or mobo. Sandy bridge for the win. Although I am running with the integrated intel graphics card. I will benefit a lot if I buy a decent graphics card, like the GTX 1060 or the 1650 Super. That is, _when I get the money to afford it,_ because I'm broke now.
My current board is an EVGA X79 board and CPU which is 6 years old with a GF1660ti vid card. Not a 'cheap' board back then. Mid-range and higher level boards are generally more reliable and last longer due to the better quality build process.
I was a sucker for years that I needed to get the best motherboard possible. Now I am still a sucker for getting the best motherboard possible. Two reasons: 1 they'll last longer and 2 the resale value is higher on these boards. So the day I sell my Z77 motherboard I will be asking top dollar for it and I know I will get it. some lower or mid range X570 boards are the best bang for the buck. I have the MSI MPG X570 Gaming Plus with a 3700X and a 2080 Super and I couldn’t be any happier. Goes for $170 and you can get some for around $200 which are even better and will last a long time.
AsRock X570M Pro4 AM4 looks dead sexy brand new outta the wrap, components on mobo fabrication tech have shrunk too. I can barely see pots and diodes and resistors they are effink microbial on AM4 boards. Kind of stunning effect really, the only stuff that really sticks out on that bare board are the ports, sockets, slots, plugs and heat shields. Maybe its chipset fan too, there'll be a water block for that I reckon. These are absolutely the best bang for a buck mobo right now. I recommend.
it's always fine, that's true. but not as reliable or durable under the same circumstances. Power fluctuations can degrade components, it's invisible to the eye but pretty clear (or deadly) on the long run.
No need super expensive "Gaming" motherboard unless : 1. You're gonna do SLI / Crossfire or multi GPU setup 2. You need extra PCI-E bandwith for Raid-0 NVME SSD 3. You use top of the line CPU like i9 9900K or Ryzen 3950X (no need $500 intel Z390 or AMD X570 motherboard if you're gonna use i5 9400F or Ryzen 5 3600) 4. You can't live without RGB bling-bling
Oh ho ho, I use Ryzen 5 3600 with X570 chipset. Actually, the chipset can provide up to PCIe Gen 4 support instead of Gen 2 that other chipsets provide. I can run PCIe gen 3 cards using PCIe x4 slot now, and also, one of the Wifi AC 1200 card that use PCIe gen 3 x1 to the fullest (I can now get a max speed of 1Gbps instead of 500Mbps).

Well, depends. What if your system needs, say, 500 watts. Why would you get a 1,200 watt psu? That’s just a waste of money on extra wattage that you won’t even use. Also, with a mid-range mobo, you can get some really high quality stuff with just a little less bells and whistles, but at half the price.
This is all true, quality components at perform better today WILL last longer than low quality components that perform "meh" today. OC motherboard is a bit more special case tho, if you dont OC you dont get the benefit (and this is very personal if you want or not). Everyone have a budget, some more fixed than others, and within that budged you should get the best you can not just the cheapest. PSU come with 10years(?) warranty and you should expect to upgrade your system every few years = last several builds. Case could last until your grandchildred die of old age, clearly something that could last for several builds. Not to mention cooling is very dependent on the case, and component lifespan is increase with good cooling (or decrease if they get to hot) SSD's today last almost forever, i still have my 120gb from '09 and i have no problem with it (in a less used laptop, but still alive and run circles around any HDD) Large storage i would still keep on HDD due to cost, but i have never had a SSD fail while i had several from HDDs over the years. 256gb system drive and 1tb for storage is more than enough for 99% of users, any additional storage should IMO be on HDD or possibly in a NAS (HDD in the NAS) CPU and GPU is more the performance, buying a lower tier today might mean you "need" to upgrade next year while a higher tier might last you several years before that "need" show itself. You mostly get what you pay for, the cheapest option will only last so long, either due to quality or simply starting far behind the curve today and ending up to slow down the line.
I still use my 11 year old motherboard that cost me like 60$. It works fine, has a lot of USB 2 and 3. Good audio and yeah. Just works lol. I will probably never buy an expensive MOBO. Maybe for some better Bluetooth and wireless net, but even then id rather just plug a cable and use a 10$ USB Bluetooth plug. It works fine.
2:55, Number of chokes does NOT mean = phases, You need to check the phase design, mosfets and controller to say that. AND having more phases does NOT always mean having more power. To say that, You need to check phase desigh, mosfets, trenchfets and controllers and test it to make sure. Sometimes 4+2 phase boards mosfets ( 91 amp ) deliver much more power than some of 6+2 (48 amp) phases.

The cheapest and the most expensive boards also tend to have less support after release if there are problems because there are not as many users as common mid-range boards or any other product.
I have a few unrelated questions: How many of those “Novelty Keyboards” do you still have around the office? Which one do you wish you had mastered and became a more efficient worker thanks to that? (Or have you done so?) Is it posible to combine a bunch of those Keyboards, boxes, mouses(?) mice(?) (is it still mice when its from a PC) etc to create the most WIERD PC ever?

My last high end board ( last mobo purchase at all) is the Asus P8P67 Deluxe. I remember dieing a little inside paying $360 for it. But I loved the features, Bluetooth? really? that was rare for a desktop back then. And today, it's 2020 and I still use it and my i7-6700K. I recently had a friend give me a GTX 970 so I do ok. Was killed by hiring the wrong tree guy and trying to help him (literally, died) so now disabled. So in hind sight I am SO GLAD I bought the best i could 8 years ago. I hope it keeps holding up while I save more to get a new system. Since then I have built a couple PC's for friends/family and they wanted to go no higher than $60 for mobos. I have replaced no less than 2 of those motherboards already as they had something go out in them (SATA controller, ETH etc). So do yourself a favor, DONT SKIMP on the MOBO
The motherboard is the last thing to check when building PCs because at that moment you can choose one depending on what component you already listed and your budget. I prefer a good CPU without overlock rather than an expensive motherboard with a dual-core.
I don't understand why someone wouldn't buy the motherboard and CPU "together" if you get a cheap processor then you get a cheap motherboard and vice versa otherwise you are bottlenecking one part or another, this is especially true with long term builds where upgrade cycles are far between.

@@keylatheace_dcs127 Pretty sure you're completely confusing an overclocked 9900K with a speed-locked 9700F... the 9700F just doesn't get very hot. I've been running a 9700F on this MB for about a year now, no problems, full (locked) speed... what's your experience with this setup? My VRMs are just fine. I speak from personal experience, not throwing wild guesses to the wind and offering opinions without knowledge.
@@wolfshanze5980 "wild guesses"... We're not trying to attack you, we're reccomending you don't continue what you're doing. Our "wild guesses" are backed by specs. A board of that quality (or lack thereof) will have the minimum VRMs that work, or 65w. Sure you may have a *TDP* OF 65W, but TDP and actual power draw are not the same thing. A 9700F can pull >100w EASILY when turbo boosting. A sustained multicore load will almost guarantee VRM throttling your boost clocks, and a heavier one cutting into base clocks.

I've seen major differences with my builds between good and bad VRM set ups. Also big efficiency gains at same GHz vs bad boards. I tend to run mine at 100% load 24/7 so these things matter to me. For example I upgraded my i7-8700k from a Asus board to a recommended EVGA board and saw a 20W less power being used at the same 4.9GHz all core. Also stopped VRM throttling. So yes, I have to shop for boards with well regarded VRM set up and the plugs I need. Say, the stupid rare USB-C front header.

When it was time to upgrade my PC a few years ago, i went with a top of the line ASUS board for AMD, mainly for the amount of rear USB 3.0 ports, ability to run 2 NVMe drives and a host of SATA ports (6 or 8). because i want to run separate physical drives for different purposes, Getting a cheaper board and lots of add-on cards was not sensible, neither was forking out a ton of cash for top of the line capacity magnetic drives. The top of the line boards simply are the most versatile of them all, from RGB to over-clocking to add-ons to running multiple GPUs. And like they say: better to have sth you don't need, than to miss sth you thought you didn't need.
I got an Asus z360-A and being honest I probably don't use half the features its got but 1 thing I thought was awesome was its automatic overclocking feature. It allegedly tests what CPU you have and rates your cooler and then decides what clock speed you can have. I managed to get an extra Ghz out of my Core i7 8700k. On the down side I have blue screened twice in the last few weeks since I enabled this feature. Although these were after long gaming sessions when I have accidentally left chrome open to look at a TH-cam video to see how to get passed something. And we all know how chrome seems to use more performance then Crysis!
Alright I got the VisionTek pocket SSD and I'm getting USB 2.0 speeds of 27MB/s. Just the kind of performance my Xbox 360 needed so I can actually play the Quest for the Lost Eternia Shards without the constant lag, especially since now I can enter the Crystalline Dimension, I need IDE quality performing USB drives for that.

And chokes are inductors, coils and when you have two 400nH inductors in parallel their combined inductance is 200nH granted you split a load across two of them but they don't get hot enough to effect there performance to begin with. And buying one 200nH higher current rated chouk is cheaper than two 400nH lower current ones....but manufacturers still do it because everyone still count those... however if something make more sense from electrical stand point it is to count number of compactors (caps) around socket because more of them the better filtering is and power delivery is more stable. You cant know number of phase unless you find details of everything used to make it. For example my friend spent more on gigabyte b450 aorus elite that is electrical wore than msi b450 tomahawk but hey aorus looks better... and is more expensive so it must be better!? WRONG!

That's the manufacturer's plan: low-price product for those who don't have extra money to spend, high-price product for those who don't care about price, and a middle product they plan on selling the most of because people's decision process is "low priced one is too cheap / bad quality, and high-price one is too fancy and overkill" So the middle priced product is designed to have good profit margins (ie, may not be the best deal for consumer).
Hopefully manufacturers don't figure this out and start selling budget MOBOs as mid-range, upgrading only the looks

In the 25 years I've been building my own PCs, I've always stuck to the 100-150 range on motherboards. I've had a single failure, but it was within warranty and was repaired for free. No way to say if that was because they were cheap, or just bad luck of the draw. This video answered its own question right at the start, then spent 4 minutes in a circle to come back around to the same thing. Get what has the I/O features you need.
Also, thicker boards do not always mean thicker traces, but can mean more layers. In addition, a thinner board can actually have superior performance by moving signal layers closer to power planes. This reduction in thickness is from a reduction in the insulating material, like FR4, not by thinner traces. Thicker does not automatically mean better, not by a long shot, and you do a disservice to your viewers saying so.

idk, getting cheapo motherboards at least for me has been a good experience so far, nothing has failed and everything has been quite reliable, even older prebuilts do well, despite having the cheapest everything in most cases and the least of features.
Mama board disciplines all the child components and papa PSU supplies for the family. And then Papa PSU gets drunk off that White Lightnin' moonshine and slaps the Mama board into a "brick" wall.
Then the components have to go to RMA & Associates: Divorce Attorney at Law. Papa PSU says it wasn't a wall she hit but rather just Momma's VRM's acting up. Momma says it's Pappa's degrading capacitors that made him blow up like he did in a fit of rage. CPU Brother and GPU Sister are adopted by new components.

Let's look at my personal experience.
I've been owning and repairing computers for ... a while.
I've had a lot of parts fail on me.
The three most common failures I've seen are:
#1> Hard drives.
Not the most fair comparison, due to the VAST majority of my hard drive failures being laptops, and rough handling played a major role in most of them.
This was a major reason why I was so happy to see SSDs becoming affordable, and I was a major evangelist for the technology in laptops in the early days.
Forget the speed benefit, buy an SSD for your older laptop so you don't lose all your data if you drop it! I have one machine that's claimed THREE drives all by itself.
Can be resisted with a good solid backup plan, and given the average age of my typical failing hard drive (I've only lost one newish drive), you're probably due for an upgrade anyways.
#2> Fans.
I've had a lot of old and crusty fans fail. But I've also been able to repair a lot of my failed fans and restore them to operation.
Unless it's your CPU fan, these usually aren't terminal.
#3> Motherboards.
Seriously. I'm saddened by how many motherboard failures I've experienced over my computer-owning life.
It's a good idea to put a bit of dollar into the quality of your motherboard purchase to try to help head off this particularly traumatic, sudden, expensive, and *very* computer-ending failure.
My first desktop motherboard was also my first desktop motherboard failure. I hated that thing and was honestly kinda glad to see it go.
It resulted in me buying an old server grade workstation motherboard, as I wasn't ready for a CPU upgrade, and Intel did an Intel and discontinued my socket.
I have another system in my collection that I'm pretty sure is a ticking time bomb before its motherboard goes.
Damn, I never had hardware fail on me ever. I've reassembling computers since I was 6 and never have I ever had any component at all die on me. Once a VERY old hdd stopped working over a bent pin, so I decided to retire it instead of fixing it, and I had a gpu fan blade break, but I replaced the fan so it's working fine again. So far nothing died. Not even 20 year old oem psus
My very first hardware failure was by my GPU, because my parents didn't think having a FREAKING FAN ON THE GPU WAS ACCEPTABLE. Entire GPU burnt itself up and took the motherboard with it.

She doesn't need a super good motherboard, an i5-6400 will be fine with a H110M if nothing will be done to the computer.

They don't matter as much any more, especially on the AMD side. 95% of consumers won't notice difference. But Intel still segments hard so you're right.
Not worth it, there's a bad board for every chipset. For example the x570GT is rated F on the LTT Motherboard Tier List due to bad power delivery which only support 50A, while the Asrock B450 Pro4 is rated D as it has better power delivery of up to 100A and costs half the price if not less.
You might be right about bad motherboards for every Chipset, but thats not the fault of a chipset. A Chipset does provide features. Those features segment Motherboards into tiers. And that is something I personally think should matter to a consumer. Ofc you are right, it doesn't matter to everyone and most won't even notice the difference, but to those who build their PC by themselfs, which are those this video is targeted at, it should matter. And Chipsets may (depending on the platform) provide the support to overclock. There are Chipsets that will straight up lock overclocking, even though the processor might support it.
Truth be told when I went to buy the board in my current system what I cared most about was having something that was full ATX first and foremost so I had plenty of Sata and expansion ports,(and since I was building in a case with a tempered glass side panel I wanted something that would fully fill the motherboard tray). I also wanted something that had onboard RGB control and lighting as I was also looking to make a flashy system as well. I went with a ROG Strix B450 gaming F because it filled all the needs I had for the build and seemed to be a good value for the money in December of last year and it had a lot of positive reviews.
I would love it if a bit of diagnostic help like buttons and a post code display which are not something only Overclockers need would be on not bonkers expensive mainboards. instead of comparatively useless stuff like RGB, bonkers level overclocking and whatnot.

Personal expirence, never gona buy a high end MB ever again, not because they are bad or not worth, because last one ( ASUS ROG Z270i Strix GAMING) have a problem with their memory channels after some time of use (never OC, buy it most for integrated wifi 5 and bluetooth in a ITX at the time) and asus dont recognize garranty, so i en up buying a cheap msi b250 with a pcie card for wifi and bluetooth. all the original components of the ASUS are still working on the chep msi, and if this one died, at least was cheap.
I have a computer with a first gen i7 with an expensive motherboard that I have gamed on for years and only recently stop using it for gaming, it's now my plex server. I have another computer hats a 4th gen i7 with a motherboard that cost me 89 at the time, it died 1 1/2 years ago, but before it died it went out slowly over 3 months.

There's a middle ground where you're not spending $500, but getting the extra features you would want over the $50 unit.
I typically look around the $200 mark. That, I feel, is the half way mark. It has features you'd want, and doesn't have features you don't want.
I have been running Gigabyte X58 UD7, one of the most expensive mobo of 2009, for 11 years now 24/7. Computers are fast enough in every way, support enough memory etc. that the computer you build today will be usable at least a decade in all but compute heavy tasks. You can buy 2nd hand 3950X and Big Navi later and extend the life of your system. Motherboard is the only thing you are not going to upgrade.
I also bought on 2009 one of the biggest/best cases, best PSU, and Noctua NH-D14. Buying great case, great PSU and great air cooler (water cooling is obsolete, best air coolers beat all AIOs) are great investments. Great cases will look great and offer everything you need for a really long time. Good PSU won't cause short circuits, won't break and require work for replacing it, won't have crappy coolers that starts to make noise later, and it produces better quality electricity which is good for all the components.
Great air cooler allows better boosting, cooler temps which leads to quite a bit lower use of electricity, which accumulates into real savings over the years especially in 24/7 usage. You don't need to clean the cooler as often, it's more quiet, has more reliable fans. And good coolers have resell value. Good PSU and case can also help with the use of electricity, as PSU will waste less power and produce cleaner power that allow all components waste less, and great case helps to keep components cooler and more efficient.
There is a fluid cooling system that will beat forced air heat dispersion... but it's not the old tube based water cooling.
It's 100% immersion, zero fan. Such as th-cam.com/video/PvmMs6mU0NU/w-d-xo.html for example.
Pricey, sure... but if the system is properly sealed to keep out contaminants it'll run indefinitely. OFC, making future changes is moot since draining to replace a graphics card, for example, would be a PITA.
I didn’t expect the extra features to be so important when I bought my Aorus Master Z390 beside stably overclocking my 9900k. But I end up using all these features to the max such as Bluetooth 5.0, extra USB voltage modulator (let you increase voltage manually. Great for VR headset and sound equipments). So be sure to check for these extra features that might benefit your peripheral equipments.

If you have a Ryzen 3900x or 3950 you should consider getting a 12+ phase motherboard. Those caps will otherwise go into 120 degree celsius territory, throttle your CPU and may reduce the lifetime of your board. derBauer has a great video about that.
I myself spend a bit more on my next board because my system runs 24/7 and I need the long term durability and stability high quality components usually provide.

I love how there is a lot of motherboard related videos popping up on my youtube recommended the last 2 days... while waiting to find out what happened to my motherboard I bought a week ago and is a few days overdue delivery... I have a Gigabyte B450M board, it was great with my Ryzen 5 2600, but I recently bought a Ryzen 7 3700X and I can tell you this, the motherboard is very unhappy with the power draw of the CPU, VRM's are getting extremely hot and having power delivery issues because they need to rapidly cool themselves instead of cook to death, doesn't help the upper VRM's have no heat sync at all, and the left side VRM's have one but it may as well not because it just doesn't work. The new motherboard will be the final upgrade to my system (a unless something fails or whatever), since I upgraded the CPU from like I said, a Ryzen 5 2600 to a Ryzen 7 3700X, my GTX 1060 to an RTX 2070 Super, replaced all 5 120mm fans in my case with newer, more powerful fans to blow a lot more air into and out of the case, I have 16gb of DDR4 3200mhz ram so no need to upgrade that for a while, and also added 2tb of extra space to my overall storage, and once it gets here, I will be replacing my current Gigabyte B450M with an ASUS TUF B450-PRO board, from Micro ATX to full sized ATX board, has some real nice heat syncs over the VRM's, and have a few other pretty good looking heat syncs elsewhere on the board, plus a better payout of the SATA ports, and is made with Ryzen 3rd gen in mind so no updating the BIOS to run any 3rd gen Ryzen CPU, can do that out of the box. I also have a be quiet! Pure Rock CPU cooler to replace the EXTREMELY LOUD stock cooler that came with the 3700X... I have never heard a Wraith Prism be so loud in a system before, and has to be, as it can barely keep the CPU cool enough while idle. Needless to say I finally have myself a really decent CPU (once the new motherboard arrives and is installed) and will be building a second PC out of all the spare parts I will have left over (currently the only spare part missing is a motherboard to run the Ryzen 5 2600, which the board I am using now will be the board used in the second system)

When I was picking out parts for my first PC I was originally going to cheap out on my motherboard. I am happy I invested in a better model, cheap motherboards typically have cheap VRM. (I ended up going with an Asus Z370 ROG Maximus X Hero WiFi)

Asus has a quality series of z390 boards for anyone searching for a solid mid-range... Asus Prime z390a ~$170 for base / Asus ROG z390e ~$220 if you want built in AC WiFi/BT5.0 - the bios on their boards is super easy to use and has a high threshold for customization

So as always, build with your specific use cases in mind. If you're just gonna game than a low to mid-tier board would be more than adequate but if you're planning on using it for more than that like streaming or light to medium workstation tasks than throwing the dough at a higher-end mobo might be worth your while.
In my experience don't cheap out on a motherboard you end up pay the same price for two motherboards half the price as an expensive one because of issues and buy a motherboard where there is confirmation for future upgrades like Ryzen or like Intel used to. An exception for a cheap motherboard was for my first build I had an i7 4790k with a $49 motherboard from MSI (brown with blue pcie 16 slot) I don't remember the name but it was a solid built mobo with overclock capabilities
In my experience, the Gigabyte A320m S2H has been really good so far, almost a year with it with both the ram an the cpu OC'ed
I think the next Ryzen processors are going to use a new chipset as AMD has reached the end of what this one can do. But the next chipset will have a few years of support once they swap to that.
@@jacobgame2757 Ryzen 4000 (Zen3) should still be AM4 and be supported on older motherboards (except maybe A320). Ryzen 5000 (Zen4) will most likely be a new socket and support DDR5 and AVX512.
My build is 4790K on MSI Z97 Gaming 3 from 2015 and i'm using it to write this very comment, heh. MSI GTX 970 still going strong too.

Thanks man, that was a good video. I'm an MSI B550 Pro VDH Wifi guy - I build a lot of rigs with this, but they aren't going to crazy overclockers and it's been a very reliable board..only $110 for Zen 2 and Zen 3 Ryzen CPUs. It's great.

I got an X370 board (Asrock Killer Sli/Ac) for my original R5 1600 build and now have a 2600 installed in it and it still runs great. I plan on upgrading to a new board and a 3600 eventually but really have no need right now other than wanting a smaller case and ARGB headers. Been thinking of X470 since it's a decent sweet spot of features/price.

Nearly all modern connectors are a serial connection. And both of them are RJ45 Ethernet jacks, not DB9 Serial.
More specifically those are Cisco serial cables (console cables), you get them with pretty much all their server grade switches and routers.
Get your facts right at first.. That is one type of CAT 6 connector..

It's a serial cable, it's not an Ethernet cable. Jack doesn't define cable type, I've used RJ45 for POTS, Ethernet, and Serial. All different cables. You'd have a bad time pumping Ethernet at any modern speed through that serial cable
i've blasted thru about 20 mobos ranging from cheap to expensive and the failures were indiscriminate. Of 6 identical machines, three died at 1.5, 2 and 3.5 years while the 3 remaining still work 11 years on. Same batch of boards. In general, top end boards with big PSU and graphics cards failed fastest, and of laptops, the only one to ever fail was a 7gen i7 at 18 months, bad MOSFET. The other 5 are 2-5 gen i5-i7, all fine. My advice is go mid-range for longevity and go cheap otherwise, because chances are it will last as long as an expensive one and its death won't make you suicidal. Possibly interesting: of about 28 machines over 20 years, the mobo was #1 at failures. 75% of mobo failures was trace melting on high CPU+GPU load and the rest were random rubbish components. What I do now is buy cheap and just abuse them (render farm) and for the most part, they take the punishment without issue.

Sure it can last ALOT longer than that, you should expect to upgrade after at best 5 years. Most people would want to upgrade sooner for higher perfomance, but that is a different problem :)

My current board is an EVGA X79 board and CPU which is 6 years old with a GF1660ti vid card. Not a 'cheap' board back then. Mid-range and higher level boards are generally more reliable and last longer due to the better quality build process.

I was a sucker for years that I needed to get the best motherboard possible. Now I am still a sucker for getting the best motherboard possible. Two reasons: 1 they'll last longer and 2 the resale value is higher on these boards. So the day I sell my Z77 motherboard I will be asking top dollar for it and I know I will get it. some lower or mid range X570 boards are the best bang for the buck. I have the MSI MPG X570 Gaming Plus with a 3700X and a 2080 Super and I couldn’t be any happier. Goes for $170 and you can get some for around $200 which are even better and will last a long time.

AsRock X570M Pro4 AM4 looks dead sexy brand new outta the wrap, components on mobo fabrication tech have shrunk too. I can barely see pots and diodes and resistors they are effink microbial on AM4 boards. Kind of stunning effect really, the only stuff that really sticks out on that bare board are the ports, sockets, slots, plugs and heat shields. Maybe its chipset fan too, there'll be a water block for that I reckon. These are absolutely the best bang for a buck mobo right now. I recommend.
I'm using a $150 low-midrange motherboard and it's been fine for not only general use but overclocking
it's always fine, that's true. but not as reliable or durable under the same circumstances. Power fluctuations can degrade components, it's invisible to the eye but pretty clear (or deadly) on the long run.
No need super expensive "Gaming" motherboard unless :
1. You're gonna do SLI / Crossfire or multi GPU setup
2. You need extra PCI-E bandwith for Raid-0 NVME SSD
3. You use top of the line CPU like i9 9900K or Ryzen 3950X (no need $500 intel Z390 or AMD X570 motherboard if you're gonna use i5 9400F or Ryzen 5 3600)
4. You can't live without RGB bling-bling
Oh ho ho, I use Ryzen 5 3600 with X570 chipset. Actually, the chipset can provide up to PCIe Gen 4 support instead of Gen 2 that other chipsets provide. I can run PCIe gen 3 cards using PCIe x4 slot now, and also, one of the Wifi AC 1200 card that use PCIe gen 3 x1 to the fullest (I can now get a max speed of 1Gbps instead of 500Mbps).

person C: having a good PSU can last multiple builds or a decade
person D: having a good CPU can last multiple gens
person E: having a good GPU can save several gens of upgrade
person F: having a large storage SSD can last you several builds

Well, depends. What if your system needs, say, 500 watts. Why would you get a 1,200 watt psu? That’s just a waste of money on extra wattage that you won’t even use. Also, with a mid-range mobo, you can get some really high quality stuff with just a little less bells and whistles, but at half the price.
This is all true, quality components at perform better today WILL last longer than low quality components that perform "meh" today.
OC motherboard is a bit more special case tho, if you dont OC you dont get the benefit (and this is very personal if you want or not).
Everyone have a budget, some more fixed than others, and within that budged you should get the best you can not just the cheapest.
PSU come with 10years(?) warranty and you should expect to upgrade your system every few years = last several builds.
Case could last until your grandchildred die of old age, clearly something that could last for several builds. Not to mention cooling is very dependent on the case, and component lifespan is increase with good cooling (or decrease if they get to hot)
SSD's today last almost forever, i still have my 120gb from '09 and i have no problem with it (in a less used laptop, but still alive and run circles around any HDD) Large storage i would still keep on HDD due to cost, but i have never had a SSD fail while i had several from HDDs over the years. 256gb system drive and 1tb for storage is more than enough for 99% of users, any additional storage should IMO be on HDD or possibly in a NAS (HDD in the NAS)
CPU and GPU is more the performance, buying a lower tier today might mean you "need" to upgrade next year while a higher tier might last you several years before that "need" show itself.
You mostly get what you pay for, the cheapest option will only last so long, either due to quality or simply starting far behind the curve today and ending up to slow down the line.
I still use my 11 year old motherboard that cost me like 60$. It works fine, has a lot of USB 2 and 3. Good audio and yeah. Just works lol. I will probably never buy an expensive MOBO. Maybe for some better Bluetooth and wireless net, but even then id rather just plug a cable and use a 10$ USB Bluetooth plug. It works fine.

2:55, Number of chokes does NOT mean = phases, You need to check the phase design, mosfets and controller to say that. AND having more phases does NOT always mean having more power. To say that, You need to check phase desigh, mosfets, trenchfets and controllers and test it to make sure. Sometimes 4+2 phase boards mosfets ( 91 amp ) deliver much more power than some of 6+2 (48 amp) phases.

The cheapest and the most expensive boards also tend to have less support after release if there are problems because there are not as many users as common mid-range boards or any other product.

I think you should've mentioned how important audio is to some people. External amplifiers and DACs can get pretty expensive really quickly
If you want max stability and performance and plan to overclock your CPU and RAM to the max. Then yes, buy yourself a quality motherboard.

My last high end board ( last mobo purchase at all) is the Asus P8P67 Deluxe. I remember dieing a little inside paying $360 for it. But I loved the features, Bluetooth? really? that was rare for a desktop back then. And today, it's 2020 and I still use it and my i7-6700K. I recently had a friend give me a GTX 970 so I do ok. Was killed by hiring the wrong tree guy and trying to help him (literally, died) so now disabled. So in hind sight I am SO GLAD I bought the best i could 8 years ago. I hope it keeps holding up while I save more to get a new system. Since then I have built a couple PC's for friends/family and they wanted to go no higher than $60 for mobos. I have replaced no less than 2 of those motherboards already as they had something go out in them (SATA controller, ETH etc). So do yourself a favor, DONT SKIMP on the MOBO
The motherboard is the last thing to check when building PCs because at that moment you can choose one depending on what component you already listed and your budget.
I prefer a good CPU without overlock rather than an expensive motherboard with a dual-core.
I don't understand why someone wouldn't buy the motherboard and CPU "together" if you get a cheap processor then you get a cheap motherboard and vice versa otherwise you are bottlenecking one part or another, this is especially true with long term builds where upgrade cycles are far between.

I've been running a 9700F on this MB for about a year now, no problems, full (locked) speed... what's your experience with this setup? My VRMs are just fine. I speak from personal experience, not throwing wild guesses to the wind and offering opinions without knowledge.
@@wolfshanze5980 "wild guesses"... We're not trying to attack you, we're reccomending you don't continue what you're doing. Our "wild guesses" are backed by specs. A board of that quality (or lack thereof) will have the minimum VRMs that work, or 65w. Sure you may have a *TDP* OF 65W, but TDP and actual power draw are not the same thing. A 9700F can pull >100w EASILY when turbo boosting. A sustained multicore load will almost guarantee VRM throttling your boost clocks, and a heavier one cutting into base clocks.

VRMs or otherwise... feel free to blow chunks of cash on things you don't need if you want, but I don't have a high-end CPU throttling my VRM... this is coming from a person ACTUALLY USING THIS SETUP... ie: not you.
I've seen major differences with my builds between good and bad VRM set ups. Also big efficiency gains at same GHz vs bad boards. I tend to run mine at 100% load 24/7 so these things matter to me. For example I upgraded my i7-8700k from a Asus board to a recommended EVGA board and saw a 20W less power being used at the same 4.9GHz all core. Also stopped VRM throttling.
So yes, I have to shop for boards with well regarded VRM set up and the plugs I need. Say, the stupid rare USB-C front header.

When it was time to upgrade my PC a few years ago, i went with a top of the line ASUS board for AMD, mainly for the amount of rear USB 3.0 ports, ability to run 2 NVMe drives and a host of SATA ports (6 or 8). because i want to run separate physical drives for different purposes, Getting a cheaper board and lots of add-on cards was not sensible, neither was forking out a ton of cash for top of the line capacity magnetic drives. The top of the line boards simply are the most versatile of them all, from RGB to over-clocking to add-ons to running multiple GPUs.
And like they say: better to have sth you don't need, than to miss sth you thought you didn't need.
I got an Asus z360-A and being honest I probably don't use half the features its got but 1 thing I thought was awesome was its automatic overclocking feature. It allegedly tests what CPU you have and rates your cooler and then decides what clock speed you can have. I managed to get an extra Ghz out of my Core i7 8700k. On the down side I have blue screened twice in the last few weeks since I enabled this feature. Although these were after long gaming sessions when I have accidentally left chrome open to look at a TH-cam video to see how to get passed something. And we all know how chrome seems to use more performance then Crysis!

Alright I got the VisionTek pocket SSD and I'm getting USB 2.0 speeds of 27MB/s. Just the kind of performance my Xbox 360 needed so I can actually play the Quest for the Lost Eternia Shards without the constant lag, especially since now I can enter the Crystalline Dimension, I need IDE quality performing USB drives for that.
One of the first comments! My Motherboard was chosen because it was one of the cheapest and could overclock and was updated for Ryzen 2000 series.

@@benjaminmcintosh857 But manufacturers especially in recent years put more chokes in one phase in parallel to appear that mobo has more phases.... And chokes are inductors, coils and when you have two 400nH inductors in parallel their combined inductance is 200nH granted you split a load across two of them but they don't get hot enough to effect there performance to begin with. And buying one 200nH higher current rated chouk is cheaper than two 400nH lower current ones....but manufacturers still do it because everyone still count those... however if something make more sense from electrical stand point it is to count number of compactors (caps) around socket because more of them the better filtering is and power delivery is more stable. You cant know number of phase unless you find details of everything used to make it.
