  • Blood pressure simply describes the pressure of blood on the vessel walls in
which it is contained. The term blood pressure as commonly used refers
to systemic arterial pressure. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) is the highest pressure in the arterial system during cardiac contraction, i.e. during systole. Diastolic blood pressure (DBP)
is the lowest pressure occurring in the systemic arteries during a cardiac cycle
and occurs during diastole. Sixty percent of mean arterial pressure is determined
by diastolic and 40% by systolic pressure. This is because arterial BP remains
closer to the diastolic pressure than the systolic for more of the cardiac cycle.

Dr. Campbell, the way you explain concepts is amazing. The idea of teaching the Korotkoff sounds by tapping a finger on the table is genius. Many others would explain it with too complicated concepts. Kudos.

I plan on practicing a manual sphygmomanometer to monitor my husband, since a lot have advised me that it's more accurate than the digital types. And this has been the most helpful video/tutorial I've watched by far. Thank you so much for the detailed video. It helps a lot for slow-learners like me!

134/82 Got the same thing the second time. But I think people's hearing is different since I heard the diastolic both times at 82. What I mean is I happen to have more sensitive hearing in the case of the diastolic. On the Mercury one I was hearing 132/94. I had to listen to it several times. I have to take my blood pressure at home. But your demonstration was spot on. This video should be sent to every nurse and doctor because most of them don't know how to take blood pressure readings. It's no wonder there are so many people that are on high blood pressure meds when they don't need to be. And yes, I do prefer the aneroid sphygmomanometers over mercury and especially digital monitors. Great job 👍

I'd be interested to know how much variation in readings there are between different people recording the measurement, since hearing ability varies. Maybe looking at the gauge at the same time and interpreting the pulsing movement there can help alleviate that issue. But even looking at the pattern in pressure changes can be open to some interpretation.
