Thanks for the great review! After watching I bought myself a pair, and they have been amazing. Have done all sorts of hikes in them- steep inclines, thick vegetation, even up a slatey volcano! Also very comfortable as an all purpose shoe for just day to day walking around. Cheers again for the comprehensive review, I love my pair
Thanks for the comprehensive review. I agree that Moabs are generally very comfortable as I walked the 900km GR10 in the Pyrenees in a pair of Moab GTX many years ago and they were excellent. What they do lack is decent grip in the tread - not a great problem in warm relatively dry areas such as the south of France but when I come home to walking in the Pennines in the UK with all its mud, to be honest there's not a great deal of choice except maybe Inov8 Mudclaws but they are a running rather than walking shoe.
I just got a pair of these for Christmas. Spring hike I got them muddy. Rinsed them off but some mud did get stuck in between the mesh and the shoes next layer. But on some boulders or steep woodland trails I love them and with sore knees from a hard bike ride the day before . The shoes were comfortable. I hope they last for a while for me.
Score! I'm not sure most ppl realize, if you bottom-fish for open box, closeouts, overstocks, etc. you can get almost-free shoes like that. And it's much more of an adventure than deciding what you want and then paying whatever they're asking.
So jealous! I am looking at the Way of the Gods thru hike from Bologna to Florence in mid September. It’s five days over the Appenine mountains in central Italy.
Your vid convinced me to purchase a pair (while I was watching!) Thanks man :) P.s. Spent some time in Italy just before Covid hit, Urbino, what a place!! Good luck with the move Alan.
Many thanks, just got the non goretex version of this shoe, I thought the goretex version of the adidas terrex was good but omg I’m so glad I watched your review, 😮
Great. The adidas terrex swift r3 are very popular but I think they crossed over into other activities like disc golf and paintball. They are more like soccer cleats.
I noticed the fit is a bit loose, especially in the ankle area, no matter how i lace it, they run a bit hot ,but for walking with a good insert, hiking shoes ? Ya get a 100+ fotwear with a insert thats used in shipping material. ,but merrells nice shoe, as long as its vibram sole.
@@Dusty_Hikers I ended up with the Moab speed to start, $90 vs $120 just didn't make sense for the MQMs especially since the Moab seems better suited to some light backpacking too. Maybe if they have a big sale or something I'll try the MQMs as well
I just picked these up on sale at Dick’s Sporting Goods for $50! I didn’t know if they were any good, but couldn’t pass up the deal. Looks like I scored!
Hello, nice review. I will also order the Goratex model, but the durability of the vibram insoles used in the bottom sole worries me. Most of the negative comments I read on the Merrel official site were about tearing the sole of the shoe in a very short time. How do you think the base performs?
After a year all hiking shoes will have significant wear on the soles. I have a lateral heel strike so my shoes wear out on the outside heel and start to affect my gait. When that happens I replace them.
Great video! Very helpful and informative. I’m hunting around for hiking shoes / boots and these have popped up a lot. It’s between these and the MOAB 3 Mid I think. I have a rather high arch so need to pop a beefy insole in to correct the overpronation. Do you think these would be ok to do that with?
I got a pair of Merrell MQM 3s and tested them out on some hikes in Glacier and Yellowstone. Lovely lightweight hikers with proper arch support. I just recently bought a pair of moab speeds and have yet to test them. So far they do feel like a shoe with minimal arch support with more of a running shoe feel. One thing to note is that the heel drop in the Moab speeds compared to the MQM 3s feels more aggressive compared to the more neutral heel drop in the MQM 3s
i was looking around for shoes like these for my everyday use im not a hiker but im hoping to benefit from the durability waterproofness and comfort from these shoes and one main thing is, that i am over it buying a new pair every year do you think they will perform in everyday use?
Thank you so much for your reviews! I’m learning about hiking footwear and scouring TH-cam and found your channel. I am female, however, and would love to support your channel through your links. Maybe you could link the female version of the footwear as well?? I don’t know if you get credit if I find the female version through your current link. Again, thank you so much for your thorough reviews. And good luck with you move back to Italy!
Just bought the grtx pair. Not sure I need the grtx, but they were on sale running cheaper than the ones without. So what the hell, right? Hoping they’re breathable enough. Great vid!!
Mine are trapped in a container in the Atlantic slowly moving to Tuscany. I did just get a pair of Brooks Cascadia 16 to test. I am going to train for the Rome Marathon and train on hiking trails near my home.
@@Dusty_Hikers the sales person at REI recommended me the brooks cascadia and I absolutely love them. Used Salomon sense ride 4 before. The cascadia don’t have such a raised heel. Let me know what you think of them.
@@GanTreFTW I have only worn the Cascadia 16 and not run in them. I need to return them to get the next size up. I bought them in Italy and thought I was 45 EU but I think I am 46. So far so good though. I would say they are more running shoe than the Moab Speed but still pretty solid underfoot and rigid enough for just straight hiking.
Down here in the philippines, we got a mouthful of mossy/wet rocks along the trail..would the Speed hold? I just need to know before id buy a pair of these..
@@chrismichael1161 Thanks, I'll buy them..I have Merrell Chameleon 7 shoes and they are good for going down the mountains but my feet come off of the sturdy leather shoes
I would use a different shoe for trail running. These are light hikers. You can run in them for sure but I think a straight up trail runner would be better.
I wonder how much of pricing is marketing. Price the shoe high and it has more perceived value versus price it low and it has less perceived value among consumers. And yet, I wonder what the true difference in quality is between those $40 ASICS and the $120 Merrell.
@@Dusty_Hikers I would love to see you test my asics, I would value your opinion on the difference between the 2 shoes! merells are great , I have a pair moab mid hiking boots, pretty nice boot. but when it comes to low top trail running I think my asics can't be beat!
Imo, the 30% recycled rubber is junk over wet smooth surfaces. VERY "not" grippy. I have walked over a hundred miles with mine, and I hate the slipping, and lousy tread pattern and cheap rubber outsole. I do NOT recommend buying these shoes. I've walked hundreds of miles in Moab 2's, and it is a COMPLETELY different experience in grip!!! @@Dusty_Hikers I just ordered a pair of the Moab Speed Gortex. It's still summer here in NYC but part of why I wanted them other than trail running is I wanted a durable waterproof shoe for work.
