Every kid in the 70's pretty much made their own wooden boards when they got fed up with the plastic polypropylene sleds that first came out. These had open ball bearings that chattered and translucent urethane wheels that kind of chipped on the cheaper ones.
The h/m wood boards were an attempt to emulate commercial solid wooden boards like Logan Earth Ski that had block wedge like kicktails.
Still a step up from the sort the early Hobie team shows. A real 6O's board would have ceramic clay wheels or a composite rubber/ clay I think. Some even had steel 'wheels'!
I first rode a skateboard in 1970 on something called a moonskate. Another board I rode that year was some sort of flexible cardboard like wood with rubber composite wheels that took effort to turn slightly and ride even 10 or twelve feet! It was about 4 inches in width.
My first double kicktail freestyle board was fiberglass and I purchased it (surprisingly early for double kicks with a symmetrical board shape) in 1976! This had precision bearings- yay! -A slightly softer wheels that no longer chipped as bad and I rode concrete bowls on it in 1976.
I was lucky enough to meet the Hobie champion freestyler Ed Nadalin in 1977 and saw kickflips for the first time. These were definitely called kickflips even back then although not of the Mullen varieties. Nadalin had a fibreglass rocker style board (again quite modern in it's symmetricality with yellow soft rubber bushed speed spring trucks (very narrow- but with an interesting geometry that proved suitable for his aerial mini take off ramp tricks and fast flowing footwork freestyle of the time!)
Barefeet was often his style and this was utilised in the aerial manouvers as a 'gorilla grip' for jumping in those pre Ollie days!
I did a kickflip a few days later and can honestly say (apart from the world freestyle champ pro Nadalin demo a bit further south) I didn't see anyone in my city do them before me.
Nadalin did toecurl over edge kickflips, parallel stance 'old school' kickflips and a front toe forward kick (basic) kickflip. He also was phenomenal at Nosewheelie Samoan squats (a tuck-knee type pre-cursor ) and many 360 style tricks.
I shaped some wooden boards and sold them as a kid back then and can remember one little ' gremlin' complaining when he found out I had made it and it wasn't commercially made in a factory! I had coated my insignia on it etc and frankly it was better than the wooden boards in the shops at the time! It lasted several years of my own use after that. Those were the days!

Hey Jonny Giger! Thanks! That reminded me of the first board I bought in 1975! It was a blue Makaha with a kick tail! My dad was totally against it because He thought they couldn't be steered or stopped! It was only after I pointed out that the same system of steering was on my sister's roller skates which he encouraged her to use frequently that he reluctantly agreed! Best 25$ Canadian I ever spent! My buddy when I was young had a signed stacy peralta powell board with the old school trucks, wheels and everything. It was probably the most legit skateboard memorabilia I will ever see in person. His little brother got mad and threw it in a pond during an argument. This was almost 20 years ago I don't even know if that pond is there anymore. Such a shame.
