    Moving to Paris from San Francisco over the past five years has been the most difficult thing I’ve ever done and I’m a Vietnam combat veteran!

      Should have stayed in San Francisco, I moved from Sydney to France and apart from good food just about everything is worse. The administration is debilitating.

    My company luckily took care of pretty much all the bureaucracy on my behalf and even then it was a nightmare and I'm an EU citizen (for a few more months at least being British).
    Can't imagine doing it all alone, but at least after doing so you've learnt a key part of being a Parisian - how to moan.

    • @JaySwanson
      @JaySwanson  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I feel for you man. Only when my Vietnamese wife came to live with me in France did I actually experience the full on bureaucratic nightmare my home country can sometimes be.
    - De facto requirement to go back to Vietnam and apply for a family residence permit at the French embassy there because the next available appointment at the prefecture in France was 8 months away.
    - Several trips to the local CPAM just to understand how and when she could get healthcare coverage, only to find that her application package had been lost weeks ago and that we had to gather all the required documents again.
    - When it came to actually covering my wife's health expenses, the CPAM rejected several hospital invoices and had us return to the hospital to get them reissued, much to the confusion of the hospital personnel.
    - An excruciatingly long day at the OFII, including a trip to the hospital for a compulsory chest x-ray, just to get the compulsory OFII "vignette" into her passport.
    - Weeks of waking up at 5 AM every Monday to try and get an appointment on the Prefecture website to exchange her Vietnamese driving licence for a French one.

      Ugh - yeah - sounds all too familiar. And I'm only at like step two, haha. Good on you for powering through though!

      Makes me want to give up about moving back there even though that's the only place I can legally do so in the near future as my current situation is up in the air & I may not have long to remain here... could be months or a few more yrs, but I'll need to move at some point to start over again. France is where I last held a passport when my folks divorced & one of them remarried a French citizen giving me FC about 30 yrs back - at least I can somewhat speak & understand many French words than outside foreigners (life...)

    Thinking about moving to a foreign country when I grow up. Doing research to find which one would be best for me.
    Looking for a country that is green. By green I mean. It needs to be environmentally friendly in some way.
    Culturally accepting. Just very accepting of all types of people. Regardless of gender or race or sexuality.
    Easy to learn language. I know no language is “easy” but just generally not hard to learn.
    Needs good freedoms. Like I need to be generally free to do anything that I would want. Kind of like America. Like just be able to walk and wear and say whatever I want.

The american approach is " I have the right to... i want it done" .You know doggone well this never flies in France.

    Just to give you some background: the police dept is the prefecture, it is the dept that takes care of état civil which is your civil status: birth, immigration, marriage etc. The "tobacco shop is not really a tobacco shop, it is more like a newsagent given the license to sell tobacco. So it is more like a newsagent. The advantage of buying a state stamp there is that you do not have to line up at a prefecture de police, as bureau de tabac are private businesses, they are fast. They also are usually licensed to sell lottery tickets and other things like that.

    When Algeria tool its independence from the french, they kinda imitated that french birocracy system, i would cancel projects just because i can't handle the emotional pressure of dealing with administrations. All based on papers and papers and more papers with a big lack of orientation/communication, they could make everything eletronic but NO !! they need a physical paper lol

  • @AdminSorbonneServices
    @AdminSorbonneServices 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, it is a fiscal stamp, it is not money laundering :) The bureau de tabac will then refund the cash to the govt. The advantage is that the govt does not have to collect the money it is done through a licensed agent a bit like paying your tax to a tax agency that would then forward to the govt.

    Just subscribed after watching this fun video. Don't know why you're in France; guess I'll find out as I catch up on your videos.
    The birth certificate part kinda scares me. I moved to Canada and will naturalize soon. I then plan to move to France and I'm worried that if they start asking for documents from my original country, where I haven't been for nearly a decade, things are going to go very quickly from just excruciatingly difficult to flat out impossible.

    • @JaySwanson
      @JaySwanson  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's very possible. They'll want even more documentation if you're trying to naturalize.

    • @JaySwanson
      @JaySwanson  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And thanks for subbing!! I hope you figure it all out as you catch up :)

    • @PHlophe
      @PHlophe 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kumar, I am not sure the laws have changed, but that birth certificate will be the least of your problems since it will be assumed that your naturalization process has covered all the grounds, they could ask the CA authorities directly if they need more paper they may have on file. but what they may well ask you is a extrait de casier judiciaire , translated and signed by local authorities in canada. Being french i get mine immediately from Nantes but i realized people abroad often do not have it. and administrations tend to be obtuse despite the fact that they know folk have not heard of it. They don't care, they want to close cases and move on, you comply or you restart the application process from scratch.

    I'm considering to do my masters in France, and all the university websites I have visited is not helpful at all. And it is basics I am looking for: Program information, cost, bursary / sponsorship, language requirements etc etc...Good lord, starting to think that it is a french thing. On the other hand, I went to Japanese universities, and bare in mind, Japanese people speak very very very very little English, and I most of the sites I visits gave information relevant to international students. Come on France, you can do better.

    • @pumpkin7889
      @pumpkin7889 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha absolutely right. I did undergrad in Japan (as a international student, and I never had administrative problems even tho they require some more paperwork than other countries) and was looking for masters in France, and gave up with utmost angers. In the end I came to a french speaking part of Switzerland and things went smooth man ;)

After my time there, I am seriously considering going back to live for a while. How long did you live there before you were able to get a resident visa, and I would also need to sort out the working as an entrepreneur. Also, have to also shout out the Colorado shirt, since that is my birth place! Anyway, great vids man, keep em' coming.

      @JaySwanson  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Ciaran! A beer link up is always a welcome form of link =D Do you have any favorite spots in the city? I've lived here twice before, but the visa I applied for was called "Competences et Talents" - it no longer exists, but I was given an artist visa instead. It's a really powerful visa, like really powerful, and I'm lucky to have gotten it. I'd google the Competence et Talents requirements and see if you could qualify, then contact your consulate and ask if they have an alternative in place yet. Mine came through the consulate in LAX, which was a surprise because Americans are required to go through the one in SFO. The whole thing was a bit providential.

      well i'm french and got the same problem , I remembered it was supposed to be in the tabac, but... no freaking tabac sold them anymore " nope , we don't, don't know , won't tell". Everthing is made to make you give up , efficiency and smartness are forbiden in french administration, exept la "direction des finances publiques ", they are quick and efficient to help you pay taxes.

You know what, i ll follow your channel and maybe you ll reconcile myself with my own country who knows ;)

    • @JaySwanson
      @JaySwanson  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha, here's hoping reconciliation is only a few videos away. I didn't take it as bitter, but I totally get the annoyance with how things are run here a lot of the time. I get frustrated too. I figure I can beat my head against walls until I'm black and blue and change nothing, or just smile and struggle through the process as it is. Hopefully they make good alterations as we go, but for now I just think of it as the rite of passage to living here.

    • @JaySwanson

      I don't know if land is cheap, maybe out in the boonies, and taxes aren't lower here than in the US as far as I've seen. But they do include healthcare which goes a long way, and the healthcare here is WAY better overall.
