How to Tune Violin to Carnatic or Hindusthani style

In this video, I try and explain the concept of Shruthi and how to Tune your violin and why we tune it to different forms.
This concept of tuning and shruthi can be applied to any string instrument to play Indian music.
Shruthi - Choose a particular sound frequency and make that as tonic note which is base note Sa (Shadjamam).
Tuning - Use Pano Tuner instead of Tambura so you tune it perfectly. Use Pegs when you have to tune the string to 2 or more notes high or lower than the note the string currently is tuned to.
Use the fine tune screws to adjust the string in 1/2 or 1 note variations.
Tune to S P S P for most of the shruthis. But when the shruthi is too high or too low (shruthis A, A#, B, C or C# which is 6, 6.5, 7, 1, 1.5 shruthis) use P S P S tuning so the string can miantain high tension and you dont break the string trying to tune the violin to such high shruthis.

After tuning to sa pa sa pa the strings became loose and making noise, is that okey to keep practicing ? Or can I tighten the strings to adjust to comfort the sound ?

I practiced violin from my 4 th to 9 th class later had a break and didn't know how to continue because tuning was one of the difficult tasks. Great tutorial. One question. Do Indian violinists use these tunings (Sa, Pa, Sa, Pa or Pa, Sa, Pa, Sa) in stage/orchestra performances/backing up songs etc.? If so what's the shruthi use in these cases. Or do they just use western tuning GDAE in that case. ?
I have no idea sorry. But if I have to guess, they tune it to one shruthi and play all songs in same shruthi or do grahabedham and play original song shruthi in the shruthi they tuned which would basically mean tuning to G D A E.

The pano tuner app which you have suggested is not downloadable on iPhone. Could you please suggest any other apps for iPhone users? I did try a few other apps. But the tuning isn't correct.

Sir, when I used pano tuner.. the green area is seen when the violin is tuned to G# E# A E .. I tried tuning the madhyasthayi Sa to D, but it doesn't sound like Sa at all.. please advice me.

Hi Upendra, I am a beginner and having hard time to tune the violin to sa pa sa pa, I tried tuning the violin to D A D A which is Sa Pa Sa Pa as you mentioned, but I never hear the same sound as you play, can you tell me English letter that I can tune from sting 1 to 4.
My violin was tuned to E B E B not D A D A

Thank you Upendra garu, for teaching with so much ease and explaining in detail. It is very useful. I had been using an inherited violin for a while and my strings seem to be old, Can you please let me know what strings you would recommend for replacement. Also currently I am using Gustave Bernardel rosin, however, the sound seems to be sharp and it is dusty on strings. I recall using different rosin which wasn't that dusty, can you please share your recommendations as well.
I am not too familiar with brands on Rosins, but for strings, Prelude are one of the best and Daniel Silver strings are good for Indian weather.

Amal Surendran the fifth string which is the left most would be Pa. that’s the athi mandra stayi. In western terms it’s C. C G D A E would be western tuning. For Carnatic it would be P S P S P.

Sir I have one more doubt. Madhyasthayi, manthrasthayi, tharasthayi is all relative right? That is will the manthrasthayi octave for sruthi 1 become Madhyasthayi or tharasthayi if i change the sruthi to 1.5 or higher?

Sir how we tune 2 nd last and last string as through the pano tuner
Thank you very much, sir. After a lot of struggle as a westerner (french learning harmonium) - I learned the basic concepts of hindustani and as far as what I came up with, A, B, C, D are "Keys" and "Key signatures" which is equivalent to Shruthi (mesured in hertz as frequencies) - where you chose a root note to build a scale. Now, scales are the variations of notes you chose (komal, teevr, suddh) for your scale. It cannot be correlated with frequency, because it depends on which shruti you pick (which key signature, basically). variations of Swaras, whether Shuddh or Vikrut (natural or accidentals) is more or less the equivalent to (#) and (b) but more complex and logical to me, because it is established and you know exactly what you are playing (1, 2b, 2, 3b, 3, 4, 4#, 5, 6b, 6, 7b and 7) - and also which swara produces which emotion. It is so much more helpful to create atmospheres and to recognize music by ear. In western, what comes the closest to a Raaga (even though it is not even close to the complexity of Raag) is Church modes and scales.
Basically, you put a scale on a key signature - the same way you put a raag on a shruthi. Hope it clarifies the terms.

Vanakkam Sir . Sir, i have a little question. Sir choose the Pitch D for tuning the Violin, is this because it matches Sir's singing pitch? Sir, how do we know what pitch we should tune in to? apologies Sir. I'm still learning. thank you for the Video Sir.
You can tune to any pitch you like. I was just giving an example. Every song has a different pitch and mainly Carnatic and South Indian songs are in D, D# or E. I usually provide the pitch of a song in my notes, so you can follow. To know a sounds shruthi by your self, you might need some practice and experience.

When I start tunning and tightening my violin, it returns to its place again(pegs). What should I do?
Push the peg inside when tuning. It won't turn back 😊
Take the peg out...rub it slightly with the rosin..and it shud fix it.. done it, worked fine for me..
Also, ensure u inserte string through the entry and exit of the hole..not jst poke it halfway before u start turning and tightening the string..
