I live at the other end of Dartmoor near Shaugh Prior and we have several of the stone viaducts along the old Plymouth to Tavistock railway, now for the most part a cycle way and they are just gorgeous feats of engineering as are the tunnels. This one would make a great cycle way but I guess the money will never be found for all parts as is the same at my end. If only the old steam trains still thundered along these beautiful railways.
Great Video, I have driven the route (ish) a few times just can't see Waitrose letting trains down the fruit and veg isle at Holsworthy! LOL Halwill Junction looks possible with a loop around but who actually owns the land the houses are built on, the railway or original land owner? anyway great video Thanks!
'Living sleepers breathe forever, Under the earth like hidden treasure, Waiting...sleeping...lucid dreaming, For a time of people streaming Through a station all renewed, As they arrive, once more......in Bude.' (lyric from 'The Last Train to Bude' by Bude Youth Theatre March 2016) Let's reverse Beeching, reconnect this disconnected community, and 'level up' all the way to Bude! Join Connect Bude and this can happen sooner than you might think....
Is Connect Bude thinking there might be a need to buy up all the property built on the line of the original route, or is the idea to find an alternative way round that property ? Just so you know, I support the idea.
It's a nice idea but it'll never happen unfortunately. The properties and businesses alone would cost billions to purchase and bulldoze, let alone the billions needed to actually build the infrastructure for a railway which wouldn't see all that much use.
@@algill89 they said that about the Waverley route and reopening Okehampton, to name but two. Determination and persistence. Money too, of course, but that comes with determination and persistence.
I think this beautiful video shows how much of the track bed has been taken back by nature and human property building. One can and should dream. Bude, Holsworthy and Launceston too need reconnection to the rail network. Perhaps when electricricty an petrol eventually become too expensive for private car use ...
Whilst I would love to see Bude reconnected to the railway network, I don't think it would have enough usage to ever justify the cost of rebuilding the line, upgrading structures and demolishing buildings such as Waitrose in Holsworthy. The North Cornwall lines to Bude and Padstow via Launceston should have never been closed by BR. I do believe the best option would be restore the railway to Launceston and Padstow instead and have a connecting bus from Bude to Wadebridge.
