@@TheTurtleGirl Our red eared keeps biting/snapping/attacking his heater. So much that the light is dimming on it, so I just pulled the heater out of the tank. It's one of the auto temp heaters. I'm afraid he's either gonna kill himself or burn my house down! Average room temp in the winter is 70f. He good without it? Any thoughts as to why he's doing it or seeming aggressive? He's a bit over a year old. Has some floating toys, small fish that he snacks on now and then, otherwise they seem to be his friends. Suggestions? Thanks! *Edit* he's also in a 150 gal tank with an above tank built basking station. Plenty of room to play and explore.
      :Edit:
To add to this, about a week later now, he's being even more aggressive. Hissing, circling on his basking station, has ripped one of his hind nails off. What's up with this guy? How can I help him? Help me turtle girl 😩😩

We recently spent over $1000 on our Eastern Painted. She's (The Kraken) about 10 years old. We bought a Marineland C360 canister filter, a 75 gallon tank and stand, a Zoo Med Aquatic Turtle UVB & Heat Lighting Kit, and a Thrive Turtle Elevated Basking Loft. She used to have the large Zoo Med Aquatic Floating Turtle Dock. I eventually got two of them and stacked them together since she's gotten bigger so that she could get actually get dry. I saw your video on the above tank basking area and loved the idea of her getting completely out of the water and having a large area to stretch out and bask. Having more swimming space is obviously ideal as well. Unfortunately, we are at a loss as to how to get her to use the Thrive basking spot. She will not climb up the ramp and bask. We figured she'd eventually get used to her new spot, but she goes only about halfway. Any ideas and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

So I believe I have a 7 month old female Ridgeback map, turtle, and originally I had a 20 gallon tall tank with two small, floating basking areas(I had a reeves turtle too but he got aggressive so I had to give him away). She loved that basking area and would bask daily. I upgraded the tank about 2 1/2 weeks ago to a 29 gallon tank with an above tank basket area. She doesn’t seem very interested in it so I’m curious what I can do to help her bask. I’ve seen her climb all the way out for food and then dive back in so I know she’s capable of doing it, the water is full so idk what’s going on. Any suggestions? She seems happy, she swims around the tank a lot and eats regularly so maybe she’s still adjusting? I put a camera on the basking area to see if she’s basking while I’m away but she only goes up there to eat the food I’ve left for her. Her water temp is about 75 and her basking area is about 93 ish. I did hear ridgeback map turtles don’t like to bask that much but she basked daily with the other floating basking areas. Help. Haha

For the heater you could make a sort of guard with egg crate (the stuff she used to make the diy basking area) and surround the heater with it, so that your turtle can’t access it.
I’m not sure why he’s acting so agressive though, I only have females and they only fight between them. Maybe he’s too territorial and sees everything as a threat.

it doesnt make sense to have a floating basking dock that moves around the light stays in one place so should the dock as the animal grows so should the tank get bigger starte with a mini cup cake size red ear slider as he or she grows so to should stare a 10 gallon tank could home fish like blue 2 💙🦂 lobsters male and female give the lots of places to hide
I don't know guppies t have 2 💙 beta fish well 1 male I like the color blue all the fish
must get along I think the word would be comparable

Definitely above and non edible so the green goobers don't devour it and have the most amount of water in the tank. I tried using the first kind then it sunk and my little guys immediately started trying to take bites out of it. I don't know how these guys out lived the dinosaurs.

I have a DYI egg-crate above tank basking area. One of its benefits is you can design its size and shape so you can accommodate things like lighting. I place pieces of flagstone on the egg-crate floor for all-around ambient heating. I used to have an internal stand (the second suggestion) but now use it as a wallowing area (cut down to make it smaller), a place my turtle can chillax in the water while keeping her head above water. That's her favorite place to hang out.

Tip for suction cups that aren't sticking well- drop it in a mug of freshly boiled water for about a minute. It'll stick on great 👍 It's worked for me for cups that have got a bit less sticky over time, as well as a new one that had got deformed by being squished in the packaging.

My Red Ear Slider try’s to climb out on the sides since he figure out how to position him self to do so. I want to eliminate the clips and want to do like a piece of wood like how you have it set up. The only issue I have is my 40 Gallon was given to me used and it is a tank that uses a slide screen which has only three black trims around. Please if you can throw any suggestions because I tried egg crate and he just keep sinking my basking platform.

I think he "tried" climbing up it last night, but maybe he didnt get any traction? I dont know..but for a turtle that loved to bask, he refuses to climb or cant i dont know..we even put him up there a few times, he's very friendly, thinks he's a dog...but he flew down the ramp when we tried helping him up there..he's a red eared slider..

I called the pet store, thinking maybe he just couldnt get traction and they said they have a carpet that will attach to the ramp to give him better grip. Im not sure what I should do. He just tried getting up there again too..

I dunno if you would remember me but around 9 months ago I asked u about the black blasting sand for my daughters tank. We have a razorback musk turtle, since March of last year. Anyways the blasting sand is working perfectly but I have an odd question. Our turtle has yet to bask, ever...at all, since March. In fact I removed the basking landing from the tank because she just wasnt using it. She has yet to remove herself from the water more than 5% of her head in almost a year. I have it setup now where she could get out of the water on a rock if she wanted...she does not. She stays in the water except for the occasional tip of her face out of water only. She spends most of her time digging in the corner like a dog. Also, the only thing she will eat is meal worms, wont even touch the pellets that she came with. Question is: Do I have a broken turtle or is this just how some are? LOL

    • @TheTurtleGirl
      @TheTurtleGirl  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Musk turtles are actually one of those species that don't bask very often, if at all! I wouldn't worry too much. If you would like to still provide UVB, you could always use a tube UVB hood over the tank to light the tank and that way when she's at the surface she can still get some of the benefits of uvb. Hope that helps!

I purchased a basking area like yours (Penn plax) from Amazon and yours looks longer. The screen area on mine is so small that the light and heating element melted the clear plastic. What are the measurements of your turtle topper and is there a model numb er for it?

I think I may have the only musk turtle in the world who eats anubias. Devoured a nice size plant within a week. Second time I tried. Was hoping he would get sick of it but he just kept munching down like he was still hungry. I feed him a good variety the size of his head every other day but he wants more apparently. I'm afraid to feed him any more for fear he may overgrow. May have to just give anubias as his occasion vegetable.

I make top side basking box and used that for 2 months.
Now using again diy "semi" floating, wired to top edge aquarium wall.
    Reason:
    * Changed from submerged lamp to top side lamp.
    * Using top box filter system.
    * They not using as much as I used semi
floating wired type, maybe to lazy to climb up or hardly sering galvanis mesh ramp
I have to do lots improvement at my top side basking. As they will grow bigger and wired tension cannot support anymore.

Hi! I'm a fan of your videos you have helped me a lot with my new pet turtle! Im leaving this comment here bc I actually need advice!!?? Iv had this little guy for over a week and have tried multiple foods. For example
Flukes buffet blend as well as fresh meal worms that I got vacuum sealed...Iv tried feeding outside his tank in a separate bowl and also in his tank while he swims around. He doesn't seem interested at all and I'm worried about him. He's so small so I don't think big live earth worms will work. Any suggestions from you? Or people in the comment section!?
