- India's massive, six-week national election is now entering its final stages. We're going to zoom into a small district in the politically crucial state of Uttar Pradesh, which sends 80 lawmakers to Delhi; that's fifteen percent of the Parliament. The district of Raebareli is the last bastion of the Nehru-Gandhi family, the dynasty that ruled India for more than 50 years.
DW Delhi bureau chief, Sandra Petersmann, went to Raebareli to find out whether this election could mark the 'political' end of the Gandhis.

Indira Gandhi's husbands name actual name is Feroze Jehangir Ghandy. Hence Indira Gandhi's name should have been Indira Ghandy. It looks as though somebody fiddled around with the spelling of their surname.

This family is most hated in India for the following reasons: 1. They misruled/mismanaged our country and made India one of the poorest countries in the world. 2. They brought in family politics in the country which deprived the country of meritorious people not being able to work for the country. 3. They are the most corrupt and cunning family and people's welfare is their last priority. 4. They thought that by uniting the so-called minorities in a so-called secular country and dividing the so called majority community based on caste equiations to get certain number of votes they will get 30% of all votes to rule the country. They succeeded initially when people are not informed of their misdeeds to some extent, but since this bluff is now called by Mr Modi, they are facing irrelevance. History will remember the family as the most treacherous as they failed on every country and cheated the Indian people. This dynasty thing should end. India has grown out of this mindset that foreign is best, and now wants competent Indian rulers who can give them a sense of pride in their ancient civilization and modern day aspirations.
What I never understood about India is it has all the ingredients for democratic backsliding, widespread disillusionment, high illiteracy, rampant corruption, raging populism, deep ethnic and religious divides, eye watering social inequality. Yet somehow Indian democracy turns out to be more robust than in some western countries. More power to them and I hope they rise to become a great nation, but I remain puzzled as to how they do it.
Democracy in India is based on cultural instinct. You might falter and find problems on the way, but that doesn't mean you forget your identity. If your cultural instinct is to find solutions through violence, you might go that way, whether internally or externally waging a war. If your instinct is that violence creates more problems and doesn't really solve any, you go towards democracy. Most democratic nations are built on culture. Either you have it, or you don't.

India only has 3 casts, the rich, the poor and the middle class. the rich don't care who comes to power, the poor can't be helped because not only are they poor but they also have no skills that can be upscaled and then is the middle class who get taxed the most but ate left to fend for themselves as far as government incentives are concerned.
Any party that ties to reform the system gets voted out and the next lot dare not try the things that got the last lot pushed out of power. Sometimes I fell democracy is the worst form of government for poor countries, specially those that are trying to Industrialize. Look at all the failed democracies in Africa, South America, at the bottom end of economic ladder. Yet China became a success, Russia didn't collapse under economic sanctions, it appears autocratic governments are better at delivering results, at the cost of human rights other luxuries that the 3ed world doesn't have anyway.
