  • I'm demoing the brand new Tone King Royalist MkIII head that is launched TODAY!! (Sept 13th 2023). In this video I play it with a Gibson Les Paul 1959 Standard Reissue. I'm using three different cabs; 1971 Marshall 1960B, 1964/1967 Marshall 4x12 with Celestion Alnico Blues and Silvers and a 1972 Dan Armstrong with T1976 Greenbacks.

Royal Amps make some killer vintage Marshall clones as well as Hiwatt. They have Jimmy Page series and they nail his live tones . They have a clone of his Hiwatt a clone of his 69 super lead when it was stock and they have a version of his 69 Marshall after it was modded for more clean headroom and KT88 tubes . All 3 nail those 4 eras of his tone . The modded 69 Marshall clone is slightly Closer out of the 3 but all three are super close .Metropolis makes some amazing sounding Marhshall clones I saw some Videos of JD Simo testing out some Metropolis heads and they sounded deadly close to the originals.

Absolutely steller stuff from Tone King! Now I really want one of these! I've always thought the Fargen Mini Plex had a cool concept with the decade switch and love to see this concept in the Tone King.
Off topic but a cool suggestion for you Johan, what about a video on the bang for the buck tone of the Bassman Ten? It's not the "desirable" Bassman but still has fantastic tone for guitar and is very cheap for a vintage Fender! The closed back 4x10 even gives it a tiny bit of the Marshallesque vibe.

This amp seems to check all the boxes if your looking for a boutique, vintage-styled, Marshall-type amp. The 3-way tone switch adds more dimensional possibilities and flavors to the amp and dual attenuators is cool. I wonder if the tube rectifier is used for all 3 settings or just for 1964 to be vintage-correct. I understand that Tone King uses military grade PCB's for this amp. It would be a lot more expensive if it were handwired, but better...who knows? The Magnatone Super Fifty-Nine M80 competes with the Royalist, but it's not as flexible, there's no attenuator yet it's pricier because it's handwired. Dr. Z's EMS amp would compete closely too, but I'm pretty sure they're out of production.

I'm just guessing about the 1660, but based on the 60w power rating and its appearance, probably a Vintage 30. Vintage 30's are also currently very popular with boutique amp-makers. Greenbacks would be more papery and vintage-sounding if they are in fact like V30's.

Shit, I just went and ordered one because of this video. Return Policy, so not concerned but so not me to impulsively jump on something. It just nailed to my ears what I’ve been wanting to hear from modern versions of those amps. Especially ones that say they do different era’s where they don’t really. Johan, your commission check is in the mail….lol

What about the 2023 setting where you can’t afford it

When you said that the 1970 was metal plate, do you mean the 2203 (JMP/JCM)? Or are you referring to some other Marshall? I'm not super familiar with all the models of that time :)

I don't know about 40 watt amp especially the modern 40 watts too loud if you're playing in stereo. I think the 40 watts is equivalent to 300 watts from years ago way more sensitive quality wiring. Now the 20 watt with attenuator would work for stereo

Dying to play this. I loved the mki. Not sure why I sold it. I ended up with metropolous amp with some channels. But now that this has two channels, i would like to set one for crunchy 64 setting with lower gain, then another for more of gained superlead

Love the channel! How do these stack up to the vintage Marshalls in feel and tone? I was close to buying a dr. z remedy but im seriously considering one of these now.

I wish you had all of the Satellite Amps stuff. There needs to be mote sound examples of their amps and you're who i would want to demonstrate their power.

I don’t hear any chime or sparkling. It might be caused by the two Iron Men. I had the same issue when
I used an Iron Man attenuator with my amp.

Anything that gets into the path of sound kills it, bit after bit.. If you want the real deal, just plug straight in, you cant have your cake and eat it 🤠 ... it hurts your ears, though

Does the amp feel like a JTM 45 in the '64 setting? And does it feel stiffer and more like a plexi in the other settings?
