As an artist, I struggle with this so much. There is a big project that I've been planning and brainstorming on for years. I have so many expectations for how I want it to come out, but when it comes to actually WORKING on and sketching out scenes and environments, I just freeze. Because I know that I don't currently have the "skills" needed to create what I'm envisioning. But because of that, I'm not really making any kind of progress on this dream project of mine. I really need to just start making it and refine it over time. I will never grow until I get out of my comfort zone. I don't want more years to pass me by and this project remaining just a dream. 😭

It is tough! You have to acknowledge that, and realize that its okay that it is hard. But yeah, if you don't want to regret it later...at some point, you have to dive in!

I used to get stuck in the planning part and got bogged down in actually starting a piece because I was afraid of messing it up. In the last year I have started to just go for it, and treat each piece as practice. Practice doing the whole project, in completing something. This way I find things I didn't know were issues and can focus my learning on that thing before trying again. I tend now to think "Oof! I don't want to do THAT again!" instead of the old unhelpful "That sucks! It's awful!"

Perspective is so much of the equation!

My experience has shown me for this to be True. I had some health problems from 2018 till 2020. I wasnt able to move and had to relearn how to sit up, move my arm, move any muscle. I really believed that was the end of my drawing adventure. Now almost 4 years later and a lot of trying im finally able to make art a couple days in the week for 15-20minutes. It couldnt make me more happy to know im still was capable to make the same art. I really had to adjust my expectations due to physical limitations not necessarily skill. It will just take me a lot longer to achieve the same result.

I am so sorry! I am glad to hear that you are starting to move back into things, but yes...I think that hits the same sort of things. Limitations can seriously hamper expectations and such, and what is actually possible. But...they can be changed, manipulated, and used for the future!

I feel like this video was meant for me😂 I have high expectations and wants…In my mind I have so many ideas of what I want to do but I also know that for many of them, my skills aren’t there yet. I still try them because I learn something each time and maybe later I can do them again and do better 🤞

If you don't try, if you don't keep moving forward...nothing happens, and that is likely the worst thing that can happen! If you keep developing the skills, you get closer and closer to that end goal, and I think...that is basically the point.

I can’t create anything… I can copy stuff but creating something original seems impossible.

But copying is often the first stage. What kinds of things do you want to create, what would be your ideal?
I spent most of my art time copying, before I realized that copying while analyzing is how you build up the skill and knowledge base to create from your mind.

@@zack_feldman When do you think is a good time to stop copying and start trying to make your own original ideas? I am still not good at copying yet but I do not know when it would be a good time to stop.
