You can adjust your finder. I've got the bigger brother LS60THA. The Sol searcher has holes that are slightly larger than the provided screws. Align the scope to the sun, loosen the two Allen screws, adjust the finder, and tighten them back down while holding it centered. Mine is spot on after that. If yours is way off, you may need to do front and back.

@@DylanODonnell you can also loosen the allen head screws that affix the vertical portions to the main backbone of the Sol Finder. This will allow you to shift orifice and the white 'site' window so that they align -- without shifting the Sol Finder on the tube itself.
@@linuxkidd Yup. That's my non-specific "front and back". Thanks for clarifying. Aligning the main portion ("backbone" as you call it) on the tube as much as possible will make that part easier if needed at all.

Could you give a feedback on these sunsport on your skin. I found your video, because I am looking for a sun filter to my son, who has several telescopes, and it seem that H-solar filter costs more than a entire complete sun-telescope. So you video was very helpfull.

I just got the 50mm about a month ago. It's F7 instead of F10. It's also pretty friggin' cool. Since I already live in Tucson I didn't have to wait for it to ship. At $750 U.S. dollars it's the most expensive telescope I've ever bought, and it was worth the money!

Usually the problem (other than conditions) is not being able to get enough light to see faint objects, I would imagine you have the opposite problem here. It's a lot of energy to deal with.

"Cheap" is relative in this hobby. "Portable" is another one of those words. :)
So is “bright” to anyone not in the hobby. Most terms is astronomy seems to mean, not as bad as it could be.
the 60 and 80mm Lunt scopes are both portable.
So is a truss tube Dob... assuming I remember the ramps to get it in and out of the car. :)

Amazing to see a star up close. I wonder what we'd learn if we lived in a binary system and could compare the two.
Equally amazing what a thin envelop of gases and a magnetic field can do.
btw, why are solar scopes are so expensive? I'm guessing there are some unique challenges in closely observing a star but still, why are optics so expensive after all the advances in manufacturing and materials etc?

I'm no specialist, but let me take a stab at it. Why they are more expensive: 1) The filter. Your nightime telescope doesn't have a filter, you can just drop in an eyepiece and look at distant stars. They are so far away the light isn't dangerous. But the sun is far closer, without that filter you will fry your eye. And the filter costs money (the material, the cost of manufacturing). 2) It's a niche market.
I found a really nice solar scope from celestron for 130 bucks. I love it. I even took it to work and let my co workers see the sun and all the details. :)
I've heard good things about the Lunt scopes. This thing is backordered here in the US (Like all astro gear). Good luck at the doc with the new freckles!

Best luck at the Skin clinic Dylan. They are so good at the one heading west from town(I had a level two melanoma removed two years ago there). I love looking at the sun with my old SME 40 Double stack. Looks like the Lunt has the upper edge. Congrats!

I don't know how many times I have been back to this video now, but every time that finger of mine gets one click closer to "Add to Cart" or "Checkout Now" 🤣They have a few different variants in stock at TS, which makes the temptation even higher!
nice one - I almost bought a Coronado PST but everyone's videos are shouting Lunt, and with a double stack etalon upgrade and the 12mm blocker it will be nice for photos with more detail 🙂

The Lunt35 was reborn. It seems it has finally a better helical focuser.
The bands are very likely Newton rings, an interference phenomena when the monochromatic light meets the surface of the camera chip.
There are many ways to get rid of them, probably the best and easiest is to try dither perpendicular to the rings with 1x speed (or slower) back and forth during capture.

Thanks for the video. I was wondering at what point in the video you can describe what it actually looked like visually. When I saw it on the computer screen in black and what it didn't look that good but the later photos that you show in color looked spectacular.

just to also let you know in case you didnt know but you probably did... Lunt will also be releasing a double stack filter soon for this scope as per their product info on their website so youll get even more detail!!!!
They look like lentigo lesions, or possibly seborrhoeic keratoses or naevi, Dylan. Not cancer, but they are a sign of sun damage. If you keep on the factor 50+ / tinfoil, lentigo will slowly fade. Keratoses can be removed without scarring with radiofrequency cautery.
Definitely worth a visit to the dermatologist. They should be able to have a look at them with a dermatoscope and reassure you there and then, so hopefully they won't need to be biopsied. Love from Ireland.

Dylan..Glad I found your video! Just bought one and nice to see your results and setup. Might I ask what is your image train with the ASI1600? Is that a Barlow in front of it? Are there some back focus requirements with this scope? I'm thinking of using my ASI294MM with it but not sure if I need some extenders or if it can achieve focus without. Thanks!
WOW, to get an idea of how small we are, how large are those solar flares? I had a pair of flares once when I was 11. I loved them.
Thanks mate, was unsure how this scope would perform for some basic solar photography after reading the forums, but your photo was amazing. Although not sure how it will perform with my asi462mc. FOV seems like it will be quite small.
You can upgrade the Coronado too though, by getting the double stack etalon option for it.
Not a cheap upgrade, but it can be done.
Either way, the focuser on the Lunt seems so much better! it's do-able with the Coronado, but not great.
Glad you're getting checked out ASAP. I know everything is meaningless and we're all going to die but there is plenty of time for the dying bit much much later! Anyway, you need to live so I can black mail you with the Wow! whilst looking through an eyepiece footage :D
The sun can be fun, but hot! I like to use a high tech piece of kit. Cardboard shield with a hole to slide the objective through for shade on the brain.
I'm sorry to say this, but last night i spent put with my telescope I found it quite funny to do basically only visual rather than only photos as normal lol. Hope thos dots aren't bad ones. Good video!
I received my Lunt 40mm solar scope last week and have been delighted with visual and imaging performance. Hope your skin spots turn out to be nothing serious
I thought this shipped with the BF400 as standard? I doubt that 40mm will give you enough resolution to take advantage of the BF1200 blocking filter Dylan. For imaging, you'll want to really invest and double stack this but I don't know if the 40mm can do double stacking or not. The 40mm wasn't available when I looked at a ha scope, so I settled on a Lunt 60mm with BF1200, no pressure tuning, single etalon. Expensive AF.
Yeh apparently they are making a b1200 specifically for the 40mm :)
@@DylanODonnell I'm surprised at that. Can you double stack with the 40mm? edit: looked at Lunt's product page for the 40mm and yes, you can double stack. Definitely worthwhile from what I've seen - should get better resolution with imaging and more detail with visual work. What camera were you using with the Lunt btw? Mono is better - you'll get less imaging artefacts and higher resolution cos of no bayer matrix and full pixel use.

When usung the Coronado PST and the lunt 40 visually is there a big difference.

With the total eclipse coming up in Mt area in a year what would you day would be the best for viewing? A 100mm regular telescope with a solar filter, a hersel wedge for it or a dedicated h-alpha scope?
Are you getting a full disc? What camera are you using? I’m guessing a B500 stands for 5mm. B600 is 6mm. So on. This scope is advertised as projecting a 3.7mm Sun image size. My ZWO ASI 120MM-S clips the top edge. It’s 4.8 x 3.6mm in physical sensor size. If I have this figured right I could use the B600 and it wouldn’t clip on the vertical side. You mentioned upgrading to a B1200. I’m wondering why. That’s all.

I had a Coronado PST, but sold it and bought a Daystar Quark Chromosphere and use it with my 4.5" refractor. Sadly, DSO imaging has turned me into a vampire and my Quark doesn't get the love it deserves.
You can line up the Sun by looking at the shadow, shadow minimal you're pretty close.
How come the original picture of the Lunt you showed in the Coronado PST video said it was $599, but now it's $1200???
Hi, I ask someone who had a ( good) pst . And he say that it was worth the upgrade! So, I think I will save for the Lunt 40. The Lunt has a better quality etalon, and use the full 40 mm aperture.
Can you tell if the sun rotates as well, or is it tidally locked with the Earth's rotation like the moon is?

Our sun sure is a busy and hot place - wouldn't wanna live there ;-) Hope those spots are nothing - fingers crossed for ya! And interesting scope, spose the price aint too bad.

The Lunt 40 doesn't look much different to the Lunt 35 that I own apart from the helical focuser being on the tube rather than the diagonal, I'm not a fan of the helical focusers but I guess they work ok. I also have two Coronado PST's one Ha & the other CaK & between the two Ha scopes for imaging I didn't find there to be much difference. However when viewing the Sun with an eyepiece I found the Lunt to be much better viewing the proms but surface always looks quite bright so you had to invert your vision a bit, whereas the PST is great for surface but viewing the proms a bit more tricky.
As for trying to view anything on the Sun in CaK using an eyepiece you've got no chance hence why they aren't made anymore but it does image quite well, talking of which I noticed on your video that you weren't getting any Newtons rings showing up in capture which is a good thing as that can be a real pain to sort out.
You also mentioned outreach & I have used my Lunt on many occasions hopefully when life gets back to normal again I can get back to using it at more events as I've really missed doing those.
If the surface is too bright, then you could use the focuser to dimm the brightness a bit- or not? And.... does this means that you can zoom more in on the proms with Lunt? Thanks.

Oh Dylan, if you need a skin lesion removed or pre cancerous thing removed. Go see a plastic surgeon to do that. They’ll make sure there’s minimal scarring as opposed to a normal dermatologist.
(My parents have both gone through that)

I have a question and probably a stupid one. Why would someone spend almost a grand on a small telescope for solar? Couldn't you just but a filter for well under half the cost and slap it onto a pre-existing scope?

I want to get a 50mm Lunt solar scope together with an ASI ZWO 120ms c camera to image the sun. Will I need an extension tube of some sort or will I be able to just slide it in the 1,25 inch tube and get focus?
how can we get full disk view with 224mc and lunt 40mm? also can this scope handle the weight of 1600mmpro or 2600mcpro?

Is it just the tilt mechanism that makes this scope unique? Is it really any different from putting a herschel wedge on a regular refractor?
I don’t know much but you can look into the tube of the Coronado .. you can’t with the lunt energy is blocked at the top and at the wedge. Also I imagine the thermal construction of the tube is different to a regular ota which would heat and warp. These things are heavy.

I think it’s just the image circle .. so it’s probably more important for higher focal length scopes and bigger camera sensors

Hope your ok Dylan? I'm concerned about your Sun Spots. Good video, I have never looked at this area of astronomy ie H alpha solarscopes. I thought you could use a regular refractor.. seems you can only use white light filters on them. Is there no way of using my 4inch refractor for H alpha solar observing?
You def can get a quark diagonal for the 4" I'm pretty sure! The bigger the scope, the bigger the heat issues though so big SCTs are usually the problem.

Can you use Coronado double stack for PST on this Lunt? Btw, I use the dome for shade when observing the Sun. Just turn the wedge sideways on.

oh and one more thing Dylan - are Bintel offering a 1 or 5 year warranty? If 1 year (like with Andrews communication) then Lunt offer a full 5 year warranty at no cost - the caveat is you'll need to ship the unit back to the US outside of the initial Aussie 1 year warranty. This was confirmed for me by Faye at Lunt (she's their awesome customer service rep and does all their videos on TH-cam). Just a heads up.
2 years in aus (even for Andrew’s, it’s the law). But generally the vendors support whatever the manufacturers warranty is too.
@@DylanODonnell 2 years? Australian standard warranty is 1 year, unless it's been changed recently? Andrews were adamant that it was ONLY 1 year. I raised that Lunt offered a 5 year warranty and they wouldn't budge. BIntel didn't stock the 60mm at the time, and Lunt US were out of stock...Andrews was my only real option. i'll eventually update the unit with PT and DS down the track when funds allow.

Amazing images, and this is a slow part of this "Solar Cycle 25" (max in 2 years, maybe)! Great decision to seek medical advice - although I have always thought your attitude to be akin to some modern-day Tycho Brahe, I do not suggest adopting his most famous physical attribute. :)
