    i watch all of rick beato, adam neely, ben levin, jazz tutorial, 8 bit music theory, mangold project, jeff schneider, 12 tone, sideways, and so many others stuff, but you, amy nolte, and piano pig are by far the best at teaching how concept can be applied towards multiple contexts. as jacob collier would say, you bring the music closer to us, rather than a far-off goal.

      But hey ... take care not to get lost in this Piano-YT-realm. I talk from experience. You can discover a lot of nice thinks and at the end you don't know where to start to practice.
      That is what I like at Oliver Prehn, He gives you a great fundamental base with a smart practice routine. (At least in Jazz).

      nupfe oh and as for your other comment Nahre Sol is a real talent but all the vids ive seem from her are more of briefly explaining what creative prompt is behind the vid and then performing it. if she has more in depth informative stuff ill have to check it out. her classical funk mix had some of the most colorful melodies ive heard in a while.

    I have never had so many musical Damascene moments in my life before I watched your videos.
    I was totally amazed to find some one teaching piano music in a similar fashion as to how I learned guitar. That is, using patterns. The difference is, that the music theory is then able to be explained more simply. Which you do with aplomb.
    More , please, Oliver. And if you choose to make it commercial, I would be the first to subscribe.

    Nice rich sound, thank you very much once again for a very helpful and calm lesson. It helps in training my left hand. I overlooked it, focussing mainly on playing chords with the right hand (since this is an easy way to get a good sound when you're just starting on the piano). Now I sometimes sit on my right hand, forcing me to play things with my left hand.
    This 5-finger voicing is a pretty mouth full, especially with the right hand crossing. But we'll get there!

    I was not lazy and have practiced your grips 1 and 2 so far.
    Okay, I admit I could have done more.
    But with the grip 3 the practice time is even more fun.
    It sounds really good. This new grip is not too hard,
    because I've learnt the pentatonics in all keys allready.
    (But more in the right Hand).
    Thanks a lot, dear Oliver.

    Grips are really a lifesaver when you don't want to overthink and just enjoy the music! I like to customize the grip 2a sometimes in the II V I progression, moving the thumb a minor 2nd below. It sounds nice (perhaps more traditional) especially when the bass moves down chromatically from the II to the I. Thanks!

    Hi Oliver,
    Thank you so much for sharing all your ideas and tips, this is great !
    The main problem for me is that if I play and improvise with the right hand, either I am wrong with the left or I slow down and lose my rhythm. Or I make a very bad chorus with right hand. But maintaining quality on both sides at the same time is very difficult.
    How to acquire this independence between the two hands? This is the biggest problem for me.
    Did you address this question in one of your videos? Do you have specific exercises to acquire this independence?
    Thanks again. Pleasure to read you.

    Hello Oliver, I just had a question about these fantastic grips! I know these chords are rootless and require a bass note to define them. However, is it possible to improvise over a 2-5-1 let’s say in C major, without having a D,G, or C bass note? I know that without let’s say the D bass note, the chord is just F maj7, but I would love to practice and improvise the grip 1, 2, and 3 movements without having to cross over my right hand to put on the bass, or having a backing track. Or will that be bad habit? I know You did a little bit of improv at the end of this video but still would like to know, thanks!

    I think that is a lot to digest. A few more suggestions: put a blue dot on what the right hand plays in the bass. Talk about grip 2a to 3: common notes and new notes.
    Introduce motifs for right hand all along the way to keep it fun, since the progressions alone are not fun.

    Hi Oliver,
    very useful lesson... at 24:25, when you start the improvisation, what progression did you play... I can see you start with a EbMaj, then go up a fourth (or down a semitone) to resolve on a (II-V) Gmin7, then C7, etc... How did you construct the progression? And most important: did you apply a particular technique to improvise on that chords?
    P.s.: probably...the pentatonic technique (starting from the 1st, 5th and 9th) on the minor 7 right? And on the dominant chords?
    Thank you. :)

    • @NewJazz
      @NewJazz  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi : Marco :) You got far into this video... and you ask some tricky nice questions. A great student you are!!! When playing the little "fool around" solo I do actually not think very much! I move the grips in a way so they are placed closely together, and I have of course done the exercises with grip 1, 2 and 3 so I'm used to move the grips in 'natural' progression.
      Now we have not added the bass note in this little solo but if we should analyze some of the chords anyway it could be these chords: Eb69 - D7alt (a fifth down if not tritone substituted) - Gm7 (a fifth down) - C7 (II-V) - Fmi7 (fifth down) - Bb7 (II-V) - Bbmi7 (major to minor sub) - Eb7 (II-V) - D7alt (down with a fifth if not tritone sub) - Gmi7 (fifth down) - C7 (II-V) and so on...
      On grip 2 I often think triad upper structures as shown in this video th-cam.com/video/3FcuCR14Lmw/w-d-xo.html - In that lesson we name the inversions "1" and "2" instead of "a" and "b". A little confusing, sorry. I do not necessarily play all notes from the upper structure triads - but in this solo I just think in that way and play some of the notes.
      On grip 3 I play pentatonic hand grips as shown in this lesson: th-cam.com/video/61bI3dgdXMo/w-d-xo.html
      On grip 1 I play Dorian scale. In this solo I often just play step 1, 2 and 3. For example on Fmi7 I circle around the notes f, g and ab.
      I hope you can use my answer. And as I also mention in the video - we still need a lot more about the right hand improvisations ;) It will come sooner or later ;) The best and warm regards Oliver

      NewJazz I was going to ask the same questions and you both made it easier thanks. So to summarize your approach: on grip 1 we can play all the dorian scale as it is very consonant, on grip 3 we use the pentatonic scale avoiding the so called “avoid notes”, and on grip 2 we enphasize some of the available tensions through upper structure triads. Right? Thanks for this beautiful lesson and I see us coming closer and closer to Keith Jarret Köln Concert sound in the next few months!

    Can we use these same voicings for the right hand if we’re comping for a singer with our left hand doing a walking bass, and the right hand doing chords?

      Hi :) In this PDF I have made some suggestions to different bass notes we can apply: www.newjazz.dk/Compendiums/left-hand-chords.pdf
      In our case the bass note is always analyzed as the root. Cheers from Oliver

      Hi :) from about 23min35sek and forward in this lesson th-cam.com/video/3FcuCR14Lmw/w-d-xo.html we build up the 2-5-1 progression in minor by using only the left hand Grip3.

    • @NewJazz
      @NewJazz  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi :) Well, I mix some different techniques. Mostly I use the pentatonic hand grip as explained in this lesson: th-cam.com/video/mOCyAo5ZfIw/w-d-xo.html (we walk through 8 steps, at step 5 we add the right hand).
      I also use the triad based hand grip in the right hand as explained in this lesson: th-cam.com/video/3FcuCR14Lmw/w-d-xo.html
      Then I occasionally also play stepwise on the Dorian scale I can see/hear...

      Well, I try to demonstrate that with only 3 basic grips we can play almost every chord. In the lesson below I gather all the 3 grips and we play a chord progression containing the most common jazz chords: th-cam.com/video/hACDMj5QGZY/w-d-xo.html
      But we can alter the grips, creating new grips, to an infinite extent...

    Hi Oliver, My name is Bo from Canada. this is my first comment in your channel. I want to say thank you for your great teaching! I spent sometime to practice Pentatonic scale and Church modes before, so this grip 3 looks okay to me. I start following your great instruction to practice grip 1 and grip 2 and also looking at the melodic scales now. But in this video the "fool around" part, I am confused. While you are playing grip 1 and grip 2, you use a right hand grip, which is neither pentatonic nor upper structure. The hand grip looks like what in this video: th-cam.com/video/ayTl-VF6-nk/w-d-xo.html . Are they the same thing? I paused to look closer. Are you putting right hand thumb on the first note of the scale? If I am wrong, I hope you can reply some tips to me. Thanks again.

      Well, As you know, this lesson is only about the left hand, but I like that you find the right hand interesting anyway - you are thorough with your work ;)
      And you are right; when I play "grip1" in the left hand I tend to play a stepwise right hand grip like in the lesson you refer to with the thumb on the first note of the Dorian scale that the "grip1" fits.
      When playing "grip2" in the left hand I play mainly Major triads (add9). You can learn a lot more about that technique in this lesson: th-cam.com/video/3FcuCR14Lmw/w-d-xo.html
      I hope this was helpful :) Warm regards Oliver

    Hi Oliver, sorry for so many questions that bother you again. I understand that this series of left hand lessons are rootless. But I am still interested in adding bass keys and exploring the qualities of the chords. In this video th-cam.com/video/3FcuCR14Lmw/w-d-xo.html, you mentioned that we can add bass key that is on the any note of that melodic scale the grip fits, but that one is grip 2 and melodic scale. Do you have any tip or trick for me about how to add bass keys and explore the qualities for grip 1 and grip 3? Thank you so much again!

    • @NewJazz
      @NewJazz  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't be sorry - just reach out and ask all you want :) On page 4 in this document I show some different flavors to grip 3 by using different bass notes www.newjazz.dk/Compendiums/left-hand-chords.pdf
      On page 2 I show only two options on grip 1 - but there is of course several more (I haven't added them yet). Try to make grip 1 playing for example the Cmi79 chord, Now try to change the bass note to the other notes on the C Dorian scale and you got 7 different flavors... Best regards Oliver
