A fascinating short documentary on the manner in which the United States Marine Corps trained its recruits in 1959 at Parris Island, South Carolina, home of the larger of the two Marine Corps Recruit Depots. Recruits are shown arriving at the base, being shorn of their hair, fitted for new uniforms, and taught military discipline and bearing. Training in hand-to-hand combat, marksmanship, close-order drill, and first aid is provided, and physical training through exercise, obstacle courses, and swimming is emphasized. Recruits who succeed in their training graduate as United States Marines.
An incredible time-capsule to the era just before the stresses of the 1960s and the Vietnam War era on the USMC.

an error was made in this movie. What was described as the " Confidence course " was the obstacle course. I ran that obstacle course twice a day at Parris Island in 1965.

They need to bring back this type of boot camp. Sadly today's boot camp has gotten weak since they allow joint male and female boot camp. It's now summer camp now...

I went through MCRD San Diego in 1961 at the age of 17. I was in receiving barracks alone for a few days since I got there a few days before Christmas. We spent all day watching football games on
New Year’s Day. It was boring. Then the next day the shit hit the fan.

Pre hormone and chemicals being shoved into food. I don’t think Americans are just eating fast food by intense numbers but I do believe the food has been altered.

Serious question: I graduated MCRD Parris Island in 1992. It felt a lot tougher than this video portrays. Did MCRD get tougher since then or was this video intended to show a less intense version than actual training at that time?

What was the point of the music played over the film? Certainly, this is all in the Public Domain by now. Especially since it was released as a 'Public Service Message' by the DoD to encourage voluntary enlistment... It's distracting hearing two music tracks over each other; I had to look to see if one of my background programs had audio playing!
