  • Every year, communities across Milpa Alta, Mexico, come together to cook a massive feast known as the junta. The meal is cooked by 500 volunteers, who work around the clock making over 3,000 kilograms of tamales, mole, and rice.

    I love how they came together as a community to worship and fellowship with one another. That's what's missing in the US right now. I hope they were able to reach their goal. God bless them! ❤❤❤

    They are not playing holy cow. I thought making a thousand tamales was a whole thing. Their process is hardcore and that mole looks like heaven 😂😍😍

    after reading about the maya I was reminded that masa is still around, & that canned corn is doing no good to my sensitive body. I made really bad pupusas, & had a revelation as to why tamales have survived 600+ years

    You should try banana leaf tamales, common in south mexico, 2 versions, colado and torteado, colado is soft like sponge cake
    And torteado is firm
    I prefer the consistency of torteado

      @@big0ben209 they were also boiling onions and stuff in plastic netted bags. Safe to say i'd pass on these although trying one probably won't hurt much in the long run.

    Wouldn’t the plastic bags holding the tamales in the metal barrels melt when the fire is lit under them?

      you've heard of the trick where you can put a closed water bottle in a fire and the bottle wont melt, right? because the water inside can't get above the boiling point? the pressure helps keep it below 212F.
      i'm guessing something about the evaporating water, the steam, helps keep the bag around that temp.

      the tamale you mean. that is so the corn paste with the bean paste in the center, the masa, steams and becomes cooked. at home it's just steamed in a pot with a lid.

    I just can't help but think that plastic trash bag lined oil drums with fire underneath of them would pretty much make everything in that drum extremely toxic and full of PFAS

    Yes they are preparing a lot of food but don't kid yourself.... If you checked out online you can find kitchen and groups of people in various countries cooking for 150,000 people everyday... In India at the temples they cook from 500,000 people a day..... Everyday

    What a beautiful society. I love all races but I see no benefit to mixing them all together. Look at America with all of its hate and violence on every side along with mental illness. We need to be with those with the same heritage where a name means something.

      A little more than 2 pounds. 1kg=2.20462262 pounds. The kilogram is the standard measure of weight. In my country we don't know what a pound is. 😂

      It’s a community event in a small town. The people cooking are most likely someone’s grandma, grandpa, father etc. Also everything has been cooked to high temperatures. If you are going to be afraid of the next person sneezing next to you, then you are better off staying home forever.

      Actually it is, gloves can be troublesome as even the thin one can reduce sensitivity. The steam process is hot enough to kill bacteria.
