- Recent horror films have gone great lengths to scare viewers. "The Invisible Man" employed a performer in a green suit to throw Elisabeth Moss' character across a table. Jordan Peele's "Us" used facial replacement CGI to allow characters to act alongside their doppelgängers. While movies like "Crawl" needed CGI to make its alligators as terrifying as possible, many horror movies still rely on practical effects to scare audiences. The 2019 "Child’s Play" reboot built an animatronic Chucky controlled by puppeteers, while "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" went all out creating makeup effects and costumes to turn its cast members into monsters.

The most scariest horror experience is when I close my eyes at night and overthink about my future and that I'll never be successful in life and probably end up homeless and alone. Especially when I think of college, dam the anxiety.

I see how what they did could be seen as funny, but it was funny in the same way that it was in the first place that was commented on in this video, you aren't adding anything.

Knowing that there is a whole team behind every terrifying element of a horror movie helps me not get scared by them. In some ways its good, because I can just actively enjoy consuming horror media, but I also kind of miss experiencing genuine terror.

I haven't seen "Scary stories to tell in the dark" yet but I can tell that they did an amazing job with the costumes! Every monster in this movie looks fantastic and as scary as the pictures!
I wish more studios utilized practical effects over CGI. They are so much more immersive.
I think the best technique is to do what the Scary Stories guys did and lean on practical effects while sprinkling in CGI for that extra layer of magic.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and Ready or Not may be the best Horror movie for me. The amount of thought and deliberate focus on the details of the monsters just to bring a book to life and the effort put in the different stages of wedding dress, the worn, the blood and gunk is so natural. I love both these films
Movies are really works of art. How sounds are created, how effects are swarmed ... In the film it all looks so simple, but when I think how many people are involved in the production, I am shocked.

Scary stories to tell in the dark for sure was a fav of mine including a quiet place. The former was so freaky and scary with the different stories and the monsters scared the heck out of me I had to make sure I watched a behind the scenes TH-cam video so I could take myself out of the movie and show myself it was all just a clever and amazing combination of acting and art work for the suits

I appreciate that you dedicated a segment to a digital effect and detailed the reasons why the director decided to go with a digital effect instead of a puppet or animatronic. Movie fans are all too keen to shit on digital effects, believing that putting forward a "practical effects are always better, CGI is the work of Satan" attitude will make them look like discerning film-buffs. In reality, they're both tools in the director's toolbox that are useful in different scenarios. Demanding directors only ever use practical effects like demanding an architect only use wood and nails in his building.

30 million cubic kilometres = 30 million x a million billion litres. Now divide10 million by 30 million billion x by 100 over one and you get a vanishingly small percentage.
Edit: there is actualy about 20 million of penguins so its even less than that.

I can attest to the entire cat section. We have 8 cats, and there are a couple rooms in the house that they’re not allowed to go in. If they’re let into the room, they sniff EVERYTHING. and this doesn’t just apply to the first time they’re let in, they could be let in the next day and still feel the need to thoroughly explore the room. Kudos to anyone who can train cats.

I’m a film student right now and I’ve been less afraid of horror films after my professor made us break down 4 horror films like how the props and effects were made. After that, every time I watch one I just flinch and start observing the sfx of the ghouls and shit.
I think scary stories to tell in the dark was a really good movie that didn’t get enough hype! The scarecrow part itself was amazing. And the jangly man. Like? Hella underrated.
