    I've heard some people allege UB40 of cultural appropriation, since they have white members in a reggae band. I always thought that assertion was ludicrous. The fact that they paid proper royalties to the original Jamaican artists whose songs they covered makes me respect UB40 even more, in addition to always loving their music.

      I was 14 when I first saw them (Food for Thought on TOTPs). Since then I've seen them live many times & saw Ali & Friends live at the Royal Albert Hall. I used to DJ and worked as a Radio Presenter & am happy to say... I've never heard anyone sprout such nonsense about UB40 and cultural misappropriation. Reggae & all music, is for everyone - regardless!

      Some time I eat Chinese food. And sometimes I eat tacos. I'm white. Is that cultural appreciation or cultural appropriation?. People who say stupid things are stupid people.

    Not all the band members were claiming benefits. The late great Brian Travers was an appretice with NG Bailey and Robin was also an apprentice. I knew that it all started with Ali getting into a bar fight and using the compensation money to buy musical instruments. Ali was originally gonna be the drummer until it became apparent that Jimmy couldn't sing. The Campbell brothers were the sons of the late great Ian Campbell so they grew up with folk music. RIP Brian Travers & Astro.

    Why didn't you mention that Ali Campbell is the son of famous folk singer Alex Campbell, that's why I really don't believe the beginning of this video, as Ali would of had access to all the instruments he needed, and have access to recording studios.

    • @fF-jb4gs
      @fF-jb4gs ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because they didn't have the instruments they needed. No drums, keyboard, trumpet, sax etc in folk music

      @@Stephen_WattsExactly right & also in response to the original post Ian hated them for being a Reggae Band & not a Folk Band & as for the instruments Folk is primarily Acoustic Guitars, Banjos, Pianos, Harmonica’s & Ukuleles none of these instruments are necessary or adequate for producing Reggae music.

    UB40 lost a few notches in quality while they transitioned from roots reggae to pop reggae (much like Aswad). They went from truly great to not bad. Their pre-1990s albums are their best.

      I know Paul McCartney did, because he said it live on TV. Sadly, John would only have heard the first album before he was tragically murdered.
      A similarity with Beatles and UB40 songs, is the chorus often comes first, before the verse... it's a very rare thing in pop music, i think 🙂

    🔒🎺🎸🎙🎷3 Members left after 30 Years but They've still only Made perfect Albums from Signing off right up to UB45 but Ali & His Session Musicians only ruin UB40 Songs Playing them atrociously Wrong.I detest how 5 Years into His Solo Career due to poor Ticket Sales & Cancelled Dates He then started to use His former Bands Name & since He has told Lie after Lie getting nastier & nastier 📻💥🎵

      How do you know that they are lies? Only those directly involved know the truth.
      But I don't really believe Robin, he's just a good salesman but there's something dubious about him. Ali seems more credible to me personally.
      But that's just speculation, because as I said, only those directly involved know the truth.
