I cannot believe the dog just sleeps through woodshavings being dropped on him like that. What a pup!

The old boy has certainly got some graft in him, and a large amount of skill.
He puts most of us today to shame, lovely to see.

The sound that very sharp chisels and wood planes make is music to the ears, to be able to read wood grain to gain strength and flexibility the man has huge talent. It was a pleasure to watch, thank you.

This series is interesting as much for it's technical skill being shown in the titular "hands" of these craftsmen and women as it is for the human stories you can glean from what they choose to talk about that isn't just aimed at what they're making. The brother who ran off to the merchant marines and came home, the personal philosophy that one is best dead in short order when they're no longer able to look after themselves, the eyes of the middle-aged "helper" trying to glean the skill of his elders, the choice of what breed of dogs are best, even the way an old man almost openly talking about his mortality grabs a hot board and skips around like a kid, piping hot plank in hand. Every one of these shows alludes to countless stories that only brush up against the boat, the clay pot, or the reed baskets being made in them. The world could do with more shows like this.

This series fills me with awe and sadness.
Nowadays everything is driven by making money, but then it seemed like there was more to life.
Many of these individuals are not highly educated, but it would seem they have found happiness and are content.
They enjoy the small things in life.
      Their hands produce beautiful things.
      The balance has been lost.
But, it will return oneday soon.

Fascinating how most of this pretty Hull is build by hand.
Lots of traditional terms are still used in Scandinavian boat building, e.g. "Klink".
These Viking boat building terms are still traceable along their Voyage routes. As far as Spain.
The ideal 18' length for a small sailing boat were chosen as well by Utzon constructing his canonical Ålborg Jolle, especially for Danish Seascouts.

    After Aughrim's great disaster,
When our foe in sooth was master,
Twas you that first rushed in and swam the Shannon's boiling flood.
And through Slieve Bloom's dark passes
    You led your gallowglasses,
Although the hungry Saxon wolves were howling for our blood.
    And as we crossed Tipp'rary,
    We raised the clan O'Leary
And drove a creagh before them, as their horsemen onward came.
With our spears and swords we gored them,
As through flood and light we bored them,
Ah, but Sean O'Duibhir an Gleanna, we were worsted in the game

"The gunnel adds strength to the garboard strake and completes the hull." That is indeed a remarkable statement. Look at the bend thru 90° of the centerline at the stem and bow. Beautiful woodwork.

You are correct. The top strake is called the sheer strake and on sailboats is often made of a tougher wood to hold the chainplates for the rigging. See Howard Chapell's Boat Building
