Robert R to me its the novelty of it, its a long motion but its a funky kinda sneaky punch and it you dont over use it you can usual catch your guy unawares
vernon yes dude, or when you are just in the zone that day and you are schooling your opponent. I like incorporating styles when Im feeling loose during sparring.
Shane, massive respect on mentioning Ceferino Garcia with the Bolo punch, and the motion with the Machete. In Filipino Martial Arts, the strike with a blade is the 'angle 3', where the weapon is chambered low on the weapon hand side, and cuts at a 45 degree angle upward and in, across the center of the eyes. at the 2:43 mark, you demonstrated a variation of this where you whip the fist upwards once before throwing the punch, that actually comes from a more advanced blade tactic in FMA called 'Florete/Echekete', or 'thrust/slash'. the First motion either thrusts into the weapon hand or 'draws out' their slashing attack, the second movement 'follows' their weapon strike and either cuts the weapon hand or the body. Empty hands version you're drawing out their guard and following their arm movement back to neutral position as you land a body shot. it's a 'fake' of sorts. Outstanding demo, I'm a big fan of your work.
Yeah in saber fencing its also called cut 3 i think. They go like cut 1 you cut down at angle from your dominant side across number 2 same cut, but starts from opposite sides then 3, and 4 are cuts downward up
I just wanted to thank you for not being a typical channel that just tries to sell there website you honestly wanna make people better fighters and have pushed my interest from straight boxing to Muay Thai that I've grown to love don't sell out and keep it up not many good coaches get a wide audience like the internet
Shane I usually throw the bolo punch after blocking a punch with the helmet guard. So like you said throwing it on his own leeds you up for a counter attack but if you use the bolo puch as a counter it usually works for me and lands.
if you wanna land and uppercut from other than clinch there is no set up to the uppercut with punches. it very rarely works cause once you start punching your opponent immediately puts his guards up and you don't get through that from a punching range. in the punching range the best way, at least when I did it it worked against some karate guy, feint a bit. dont throw it very often. when you're in a sparring just throw regular punches like 1,2 and just make him think that you only go for the basic punches. then once you both stop for a second thinking about each other's next move dont do any moves and just pop it in there, the lead long uppercut is good. I did it the way I explained and it almost popped the guy's headgear off. Bolo is good when your opponent is backing away and is trying to kind of push away your punches, then his chin is wide open for that bad boy ;)
if timed correctly, you can make your wind god fist into an electric wind god fist, making you burst lightning out of the punch and if it gets blocked the opponent gets pushed away so there is no punish attack afterwards. Wait wrong channel...
Loyal2law by the time you only use the normal wind god fist you should be just to ir already, but you are right, besides you can dodge an attack with the wavedash and still get the electric wind god fist, but that is more advanced
Thanks for the tips! I just came across the Bolo punch while researching boxing schools and techniques and you gave me the best and clearest example of it. Had to subscribe after watching that. Im putting the Bolo punch into my work out. Keep coming with the great vids!!
funny you mentioned the ‘bolo punch’, i actually landed one on my friend while sparring a couple weeks ago since he kept bobbing and weaving and dropped the level of his face down near my torso. sidenote: cefarino garcia was a filipino boxer and i happen to be filipino as well. in fact we do swing our machetes that way to cut grass (; we also swing the machete around our head in a circular motion to gaurd against machete on machete attacks, then continue the motion of the swing (similar to an ‘upside down mirrored overhand’) or diagonally to counterattack.
i must say Shane i've been following you for over a year or two and I've got to give it to ya you've grown a lot as a martial artist I can see that, but you've also helped me grow not only as a martial artist but also as a person, you showed that you can't judge a person on his looks and that you have to realize that this person could be capable of seriously injuring you. but as you always say "fighting should only be done in self defence and BULLIES SUCK :D
Shane your a champ! I notice that you have a habit to close/blink your eyes when throwing a shot, as you already know keep them eyes open specially when your throwing or blocking
ive been stuck watching old videos and finally saw new videos. and saw your haircutand thought I should comment that it is a nice cut and suits you great
Shane I been following you for many years I learn a lot from you thank you . Can you please make a video how to do a spinning back fist or the famous capoeira kick
Bolo is a Filipino word for Machete. Early Filipino martial artist invented this move and it became mainstream in combat sports when Boxing Hall of Famer and former middleweight world champion Ceferino Garcia introduced it during the 1920's.
I was sparring with one karate guy and few time I caught him with the lead long uppercut. no actual setup. just feinting a little bit, moving around, then stopped for a second looked him in the eyes, showed him my right hand and then just popped in there that lead long uppercut. I didn't put much power into it but it almost popped his headguard off. When you're closing the distance closely and get into the punching range not into the clinch range I recommend that bolo punch is pretty useful and even if you miss it's a perfect opportunity for the lead hook
Shane! What about foot placement? Because I've had different boxing trainers teach two different things. One emphasuized the "sideways" stance" and the other emphasized a feet pointed toward the target stance. I've always opted for a 45 degree toe-heel alignment, but what are your thoughts?
hey Shane I would love to tell you a move here it is so you throw the lead or left leg and kind of fake it to get them to check the inside then replace the right leg and use the left to pivot and get behind the shoulder and kick them in the hamstrings and plz reply my muaythai trainer taught me this
Jc Conway kushondeck have I said anything incorrect? No. The guy is doing some McGregor dickriding comment which is laughable cause all Conor ever does is miss that punch it's hilarious he through it fucking loads in the first round vs Nate trying to KO him with it and he just about landed it once he was punching the air most of the fight and gassed out from it. It's funny saying he has a nasty bolo when if anything his attempt to use it has only ever done more bad than good.
Ruairí Because Brimage was 5ft 4in and utter shit fighting at a weight class way too high with a glass chin. Go and watch the first Nate fight and watch how he spams the same punch barely landing it and wasting a shit ton energy as he can't land it for shit on Nate whose 9 inches taller than Brimage. I said overall it does more bad than good not that it's never been successful.
Great video thanks for sharing i have actually wondered about this for a while now. any suggestion's on take downs on larger opponent's? I'm a smaller guy compared to must but i love to wrestle and take people down cause there not expecting it:)
Man Shane! I've just been bullied by 2 street fighters: a muay thai fighter and a boxer! They were so fast! I was only lucky that my body was tough enough to put up to those punches before my friends come! Now how to beat opponents like them next time?
I had to apologise to my sparring partner after I went for a lead bill uppercut when he went for a rear hook from southpaw and dropped me 🤣My jaw is killing me
Yo Shane, can you do a video on setting up a right hook for an orthodox? IE Jab, Right, Uppercut, Rear hook... I ask this because my power shot is my rear (right) hook... and I'm struggling to set it up as most of my combos rely on the left hook which for me is a weak punch in comparison to my rear
In your opinion Shane, when I throw an uppercut, should my elbow be in front of the pit of my stomach, or out of my central line? I know that this is commonly not taken into account, but what's your take on that?
1:03 what does pivot the foot mean is that the right foot that's going on the toes or the left foot that's completely on the ground dug into the ground sounds like it'd be more stable to move your hips
victor cuevas 60% of your weight should remain on your back foot, it doesnt matter too much in boxing but when kickboxing or doing mma sweeps and takedowns are involved so then it does matter. pivot is not just about turning the foot but twisting out the heel to turn your hips and shoulder in. your pivoting your entire body to get all your mass behind your punch for power. so if you reverse punch with the right hand then pivot the right foot but keep 60% of your mass on the right leg, dont shift your weight on to the lead leg, its means your pushing off your back foot and not pivoting properly/fully. if you lead punch with the left hand you can pivot the left foot but keep 60% of your weight on the right leg, dont lean backwards.
I have a question, I try to learn and incorporate from every martial art I find useful. But I try not to use my left arm at all with the exception of blocking, redirecting and grabbing because I have a serious rotator cuff injury that causes chronic migraines. If I get a migraine I can't train. Are there any rotator cuff stretches that could help or strategies I could use to work on for fights?
nothing like landing a clean bolo punch, my favorite punch in boxing
I feel you on that
My favorite is the munchkin punch. I practice it everyday
What's the advantage of it? It's obviously slower and telegraphed more. Is it just a pure power for speed tradeoff?
Robert R to me its the novelty of it, its a long motion but its a funky kinda sneaky punch and it you dont over use it you can usual catch your guy unawares

0:15 - Short Uppercut
1:25 - Long Uppercut
2:05 - Bolo Punch
Thanks for mentioning ceferino Garcia. People tend to forget old Filipino fighters.
Gurren Gambit eskrima!🥊⚔️⚔️⚔️
Well you kinda have to mention him when talking about bolo punch. Well you dont have to, but you should
I just wanted to thank you for not being a typical channel that just tries to sell there website you honestly wanna make people better fighters and have pushed my interest from straight boxing to Muay Thai that I've grown to love don't sell out and keep it up not many good coaches get a wide audience like the internet

if timed correctly, you can make your wind god fist into an electric wind god fist, making you burst lightning out of the punch and if it gets blocked the opponent gets pushed away so there is no punish attack afterwards.
Wait wrong channel...
Kachucho still,oddly applicable.
kaioken times ten + super god fist = gg
Shouldn't you master the wavedash first, though? It just makes it smoother.
Loyal2law by the time you only use the normal wind god fist you should be just to ir already, but you are right, besides you can dodge an attack with the wavedash and still get the electric wind god fist, but that is more advanced
I was caught in that way too many times to count. Freaking Mishimas........
Very short, sweet and informative.
I appreciate it that you mentioned caferino garcia. Many people don't even mention it
Bolo for life
Thanks for the tips! I just came across the Bolo punch while researching boxing schools and techniques and you gave me the best and clearest example of it. Had to subscribe after watching that. Im putting the Bolo punch into my work out. Keep coming with the great vids!!
wat happened to muay thai vs everything
it's called knowledge
Gabriel Flash Elorde's father was a balintawak Eskrima champion. He adopted this bolo punch from kali plus the eskrima footwork too.
funny you mentioned the ‘bolo punch’, i actually landed one on my friend while sparring a couple weeks ago since he kept bobbing and weaving and dropped the level of his face down near my torso. sidenote: cefarino garcia was a filipino boxer and i happen to be filipino as well. in fact we do swing our machetes that way to cut grass (; we also swing the machete around our head in a circular motion to gaurd against machete on machete attacks, then continue the motion of the swing (similar to an ‘upside down mirrored overhand’) or diagonally to counterattack.
The second one is a snap punch. The others are push or thrust punchs. Good video.
Read my mind as I needed help on uppercuts :3
Are you Green Arrow?

i must say Shane i've been following you for over a year or two and I've got to give it to ya you've grown a lot as a martial artist I can see that, but you've also helped me grow not only as a martial artist but also as a person, you showed that you can't judge a person on his looks and that you have to realize that this person could be capable of seriously injuring you. but as you always say "fighting should only be done in self defence and BULLIES SUCK :D

hi shane. your fashion sense is great. you can do vedios on ur lifestyle or style.
Thx this worked well on my 2 yr old cousin who kept taking my fidget spinners!
Mabye
You have to disguise the bolo punch, Gustafsson is the master of the bolo uppercut imo.
Proud!
Owwww!!! That boi got hands 👐
Hey Shane, have you considered doing a video collaboration with Nick Drossos and Master Wong?
Nice tan, buddy.
great video can you post a video of you shadowboxing muaythai
hey Shane I would love to tell you a move here it is so you throw the lead or left leg and kind of fake it to get them to check the inside then replace the right leg and use the left to pivot and get behind the shoulder and kick them in the hamstrings and plz reply my muaythai trainer taught me this
Mcgregor has a nasty bolo
Jon D A he can't land it for shit though, he swings it constantly and just gasses from it lol
Conor 'Run to win' Mctapper holy shit dude, discrediting conor all over youtube channels. hating grind on point
Jc Conway kushondeck have I said anything incorrect? My high school football coach used the bolo undercuts on his own nephew in locker room fight after a game.
bro w ha t
Caught many noobs with a hook to the head when they tried using a bolo.
Good one👍
I love escrima.. bolo punches are awesome
Super! Thanks.
Great video thanks for sharing i have actually wondered about this for a while now. any suggestion's on take downs on larger opponent's?
I'm a smaller guy compared to must but i love to wrestle and take people down cause there not expecting it:)
My instructor also likes what he the "rock 'em sock'em". It's basically an upwards vertical punch. He says it's how Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots punch

Hi Shane, what is your height and weight if you dont mind the question? You are super agile im trying to get faster.
Man Shane! I've just been bullied by 2 street fighters: a muay thai fighter and a boxer! They were so fast! I was only lucky that my body was tough enough to put up to those punches before my friends come! Now how to beat opponents like them next time?
I do Kali silat the bolo punch is great if you train weapons
Violence isnt the answer, but you can always dodge or make peace
i added the bolo punch to my arsenal after conor did it so if i get myself in the ufc one day im gonna land that haha
Did you?
It will happen
I had to apologise to my sparring partner after I went for a lead bill uppercut when he went for a rear hook from southpaw and dropped me 🤣My jaw is killing me
I'm a kick boxer and I love using upper cuts

Your awesome dude
so the bolo punch is more for if someone is rocked or when someone keeps slipping whiteout looking ?
Shane could you do a video on the smash? its a punch made by Donovan the razor Riddick. plus could this move be translated over to MMA or Muay Thai?
Show us the Tiger Uppercut and the Shoryuken.
nice, thanks
what are some solo wrestling drills
In your opinion Shane, when I throw an uppercut, should my elbow be in front of the pit of my stomach, or out of my central line? I know that this is commonly not taken into account, but what's your take on that?

Tryin vr boxing and it keeps registering my punches as hooks so kinda had to look this up lol
TURN UP THE VOLUME TURN UP THE MUSIC
liked. for bolo punch with a little Pilipino-American history!
I have a question, I try to learn and incorporate from every martial art I find useful.

How many weeks before do we have to start preparing for a boxing tournament? Or a taekwondo tournament ??
In an "amateur" combat level,
QuantumGeeks Good luck to you.
