I hope some day we can create search only icon when we want to add search on the navigation area. Currently we can't add search only icon WP 6.1. Thank you for your good work!!!
Hi there. Appreciate your kind words. Thank you. I understand that you would like the ability to add an icon which represents "Search" to the Navigation menu. Is that correct? What would happen when you click on that icon? Do you have any example websites which show how that might work? Looking forward to hearing back. Much appreciated.

Hey Dave, thanks for the overview of 6.1. Overall based upon fooling around with it a bit this morning, it seems to be a step in the right direction of improving the finer details of WordPress features. That said though, the organization and placement of these WordPress features as a whole still seem to need improving upon, as the new user experience is still pretty confusing in terms of trying to make sense of where things are. Like I'm looking for basic stuff (i.e. add/remove underlines on site links) and I'm not still finding it where I'd assume it would be (i.e. Styles > Typography > Links). Beyond that though, what I'm specifically interested in is the ability to add more short form content options to WordPress (as I think its long form content capabilities are amazing now). As an example of this, I'd like to figure out ways of emulating Post Format types using FSE but I'm not seeing how to do this yet. For example, Pixelgrade has an old Wordpress theme called Hive that allows you to add a pull quote with a background image and display it in the list view without anything else (i.e. no post title, date, category, etc), so it really pops and stands out. While I can easily emulate the post content of this now using a Pullquote block embedded in a Cover block with a background image, I see no way to hide or remove the Post Title, Post Date, and Categories from that specific type of "quote" post in the list view, nor figure out a way to designate it as such so I can easily apply it to another new post I create. Is there a way to do this in 6.1 yet? For example, you covered starter patterns but that just seems to be for the content within the post content area, right? How can I selectively hide / show certain post theme elements on a post by post basis? Here's another quick example of what I mean. Say for a Book Review, I want the book cover as a featured image but instead of it being placed above the Post Title, Post Date, and Category, it's placed to the right of the Post Title, Post Date, and Category in a second column. How can this be done? But only be done for just these book review type posts? PS. A lot of what I'm talking about here, I've already achieved using a heavily hacked Twenty Twenty theme on my own WordPress site but I'm just wanting to see if there is a way to actually build it now without hacks using the default WordPress 6.1 FSE.
Hi Nollind. Thanks for your feedback and the questions. Very much appreciated. Glad to hear you're seeing 6.1 as an improvement. I agree there's always more that can be done but the direction of travel is good so it's a case of continuing to iterate and improve. Your question about Post Format support in the post listing is a good one. The block that handles that is typically the Query Loop block. I've asked around to see if I can get some information for you as it seems like something that we should be able to do. I'll come back to you...
My understanding is that this isn't possible...yet. I would be great if you would consider raising an issue in Github about this 🙏 github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/new/choose
Once again, an awesome and informative review. As far as features possibly missing? I will have to work a bit with 6.1 once available. For now, watching this and other videos has me more convinced I made the right decision to opt for Gutenberg/FSE for a site I am updating. I initially thought of going the elementor route, which is a very full featured approach, but I was very disappointed in where they arbitrarily made functionality premium vs free, and also with being locked in to their plugin and editor. Keep up the great work. I have seen steady improvement, and like what I see for 6.1.

The Block Editor must natively allow the creation of Mega Menus for the Navigation Block. Including native blocks for Popups and Forms is also essential for the survival of the Editor when thinking about making it even more usual for any type of user.

I can't wait for the day where Wordpress has a similar set of controls like figma or webflow to create a design that is beyond a minimal boxed layout. The most interesting feature here for me is the fluid typography scale. But everything else is still super basic in terms of design adjustments. So far, I've been using kadence and I really don't understand why it takes so long for Wordpress itself to catch up with 3rd party developers when it comes to the basic layout / design features, let alone creating a design system that allows to have 2 types of buttons :D I'm not trying to downplay the progress in recent years. I think wordpress is going into the right direction with the block system. But I want to understand the constraints that the wordpress team has. Maybe it would be a great Q&A video idea to have a conversation with the core team.

Thanks Bud 🙇 I hear you on that one! There are always improvements needed. Sometimes folks are keen to suggest things that need fixing/reworking rather than new features. I get that. Let's hope we can continue to iterate and make WordPress better for everyone. All the very best
Thank you for your suggestion. It's an interesting question. I'm curious, do you have a specific use case you are trying to address? Is this a common requirement for websites you work on? My instinct is that adding that functionality could be problematic and would likely lead to invalid HTML and/or accessibility problems. The reason for this is that the HTML spec defines nested links as "illegal" (www.w3.org/TR/html401/struct/links.html#h-12.2.2). So let's imagine you had a chunk of content with some headings, images and a couple of paragraphs with links within them. Then you grouped that all together and applied a link around them (as you suggested). That would result in invalid HTML because you'd have links nested within a link. The block editor tries to be extremely mindful of encouraging best practices and avoiding accessibility issues. As a result I doubt we'll ever see the functionality you suggest. If you really need this, I guess there's nothing stopping you entering "Code view" and adding anchor elements manually around other HTML, but I wouldn't encourage it. Thanks again for your question.
Hi, I design and dev a lot of sites and clients always want the whole block to be a link not just say the text or the image… So if for instance there’s a cover block with a header and text inside. That would be fully ‘clickable’. At the moment I have to write JavaScript to get the link then wrap the link around all the elements by using classes. It would be much easier to build if I could set the link in Gutenberg around those elements… I hope that makes sense :)))) Update: I know this breaks the html rules but the reality is websites do this all the time by using javascript to jump on top. Anyway thank you for all the videos btw they are a huge help for me :))
This is a big help Dave. Could you share the code? I'm assuming I'd still need to make a separate file for the pattern itself but I can handle that - I think.
Sure. Here is a Gist gist.github.com/getdave/5e58a168de744d5637aa1ab4f6813bc9 This one is registered to a Post Type of "book" but you'd need to change that to whichever post type(s) you want to target. Also this assumes the file is inside a directory named `patterns` in the root of your Theme. I hope that helps?
@@DaveOnWP It did. Starting to get it. I registered the pattern to "post" and then did it for "post, page" and it worked for both. So cool! WOW! What power. All one needs to do is create or copy/paste block code with the proper header in the file. Does this work for all block themes?
Hi there Are you referring to this Theme? themeforest.net/item/scent-model-agency-wordpress-theme/7868093 If so then it says it comes with Visual Composer. This is not a default part of WordPress or the Gutenberg block editor. I won't be able to help you with that as it's a paid product that I have no experience of. You could try starting with a standard free WordPress Theme. Try either: - wordpress.org/themes/tags/full-site-editing/ - wordpress.org/themes/search/photography/ ...to see if you can find something you like. Wishing you the best of luck.
Hello, I installed WP 6.1 but now I have a bug with my woo commerce cart. When I click on a product from the shop even if the product has mandatory add-ons it is going directly into my cart without any add-ons selected. Is there any incompatibility between WP 6.1 and woo commerce? I saw this error right after I update my WP to 6.1. Now I have returnted my website's old version of WP and I do not have this problem anymore. Is anyone familiar with this problem? Am I the only one facing it?
Hi Peter. I'm sorry you had trouble here. I've not personally heard of any bugs with Woo Commerce but it's always a possibility. I would advise rolling back the update as it may be that some 3rd party Plugins you are using haven't yet caught up with 6.1. Give it a week or so and then try again. If you can get the upgrade to land gracefully it will be worth it. All the best
I love your tutorial, but I have a question can you do a tutorial on how to use swiper js to add a post slider in WordPress am having difficulty in adding swiper js to my WordPress theme when developing my theme PLEASE help me
Thanks for the feedback. Great to hear it was helpful. > can you do a tutorial on how to use swiper js to add a post slider in WordPress Whilst I appreciate these types of tutorials are useful, I hope you'll understand when I say that a slider tutorial would be a little outside the type of content I'm aiming for on this channel. I'm focused on the latest developments in the block editor rather than "build your site with WordPress" type tutorials which are often covered at length (and at great quality) by other channels. I wonder whether you've considered an existing block-based solution such as the Jetpack slideshow block? jetpack.com/support/jetpack-blocks/slideshow-block/ wordpress.org/plugins/jetpack/ Other options are also available which you can check out here: wordpress.org/plugins/search/slideshow+block/ I hope that helps and best of luck with the slider.
Another “big update” but still barely good enough to create a basic blog layout, terrible user interface, and a drought of web design tools necessary for real full site creation (for any half reasonable website).
Hey Jason. Thanks for your comment. It's useful to have another contrary perspective and I respect your viewpoint. Nonetheless, I'd really like to understand where I can pass along specific feedback to contributors who are working hard on all the elements you mention in order that they might be able to improve them. Let me address your points directly. > still barely good enough to create a basic blog layout I don't agree that this statement is accurate. Many talented folks have been creating excellent block themes with really nice blog layouts. Certainly basic layouts (as evidenced by the 2021, 2022 and 2023 default Themes) have been achievable for some time. Are there any specific basic blog layouts you can point to which you or others have been unable to achieve using the block editor? > terrible user interface I respect your opinion but I can't agree Gutenberg UI is terrible. Not fully optimal sure, but it's improved a lot since the early days and noticeably in 6.1 vs 6.0. Are there any specific examples of terrible interfaces you can point to? > a drought of web design tools necessary for real full site creation (for any half reasonable website). Obviously it's going to be hard to reach a shared definition of "half reasonable". Nonetheless, the design tools have improved a lot in 6.1. I'm expecting they will improve again for 6.2. Which design tools are you finding you are missing? Are there specific examples? Thanks again for taking the time to comment. All the very best 🙇
Hi there I wasn't sure if you found my tutorials boring or not. No worries if you did but I'm curious to hear how you feel I could improve them in future. For more "tutorial" style content I would recommend checking out the official learn.wordpress.org/ video tutorials. There are more and more quality tutorials there which I hope will help you. All the best with your site(s)!

Thank you Andrew. I really appreciate it 🙇 > I will have to work a bit with 6.1 once available Yes that's a good point. Perhaps once you are more familiar you might consider letting me know your thoughts? It's super helpful to receive feedback from active users such as yourself. > For now, watching this and other videos has me more convinced I made the right decision to opt for Gutenberg/FSE for a site I am updating This is excellent to hear. For what it's worth I think you made a good choice and 80% of the time avoiding 3rd party plugin dependencies is a good idea. There will always be a place in the market for Page Builders but Gutenberg is now improving to the point that it's much more effective for most people. > ...also with being locked in to their plugin and editor. This is a great point. With Gutenberg your content is always available and can simply be dropped into another WordPress website and carry on working. The same often cannot be said for 3rd party Plugins. > Keep up the great work. I have seen steady improvement, and like what I see for 6.1. Thank you very much. I know every who puts in a lot of effort into Gutenberg will be pleased to receive feedback like this. Aiming for steady improvement and showing we're actively listening to the community is what we aim for. I'm glad that's coming across to folks such as yourself. Thank you again for taking the time to comment and provide such great feedback 🙇

WordPress will likely always be behind the perceived "curve" when compared with 3rd party developers. This is because Core must by definition move more slowly than the extender community who build on top of it.

This is a big help Dave. Could you share the code? I'm assuming I'd still need to make a separate file for the pattern itself but I can handle that - I think.
Sure. Here is a Gist
gist.github.com/getdave/5e58a168de744d5637aa1ab4f6813bc9
This one is registered to a Post Type of "book" but you'd need to change that to whichever post type(s) you want to target.
Great to hear! Yes it should work for all block themes.
I bought Scent theme for my photo biz and cannot work out anything, it’s exhausting and I’ve got nowhere, three days later, it’s so complicated
Hi there
Are you referring to this Theme?
themeforest.net/item/scent-model-agency-wordpress-theme/7868093
If so then it says it comes with Visual Composer. This is not a default part of WordPress or the Gutenberg block editor. I won't be able to help you with that as it's a paid product that I have no experience of.
You could try starting with a standard free WordPress Theme. Try either:
- wordpress.org/themes/tags/full-site-editing/
- wordpress.org/themes/search/photography/
...to see if you can find something you like.
Dave - you are a real hero 🌹🌹🌹 - don't know what to say...Just simple perfect video 👍👍👍👍 : keep up the great job!!
Thank you Martin. Very much appreciated 🙇
I love your tutorial, but I have a question can you do a tutorial on how to use swiper js to add a post slider in WordPress am having difficulty in adding swiper js to my WordPress theme when developing my theme PLEASE help me
Thanks for the feedback. Great to hear it was helpful.
> can you do a tutorial on how to use swiper js to add a post slider in WordPress
Whilst I appreciate these types of tutorials are useful, I hope you'll understand when I say that a slider tutorial would be a little outside the type of content I'm aiming for on this channel.
I'm focused on the latest developments in the block editor rather than "build your site with WordPress" type tutorials which are often covered at length (and at great quality) by other channels.
I wonder whether you've considered an existing block-based solution such as the Jetpack slideshow block?
jetpack.com/support/jetpack-blocks/slideshow-block/
wordpress.org/plugins/jetpack/
Other options are also available which you can check out here:
wordpress.org/plugins/search/slideshow+block/
I hope that helps and best of luck with the slider.
@@DaveOnWP thank you I will check them out
You are most welcome 🙇🏻♂️
Another “big update” but still barely good enough to create a basic blog layout, terrible user interface, and a drought of web design tools necessary for real full site creation (for any half reasonable website).
Hey Jason. Thanks for your comment. It's useful to have another contrary perspective and I respect your viewpoint.
Nonetheless, I'd really like to understand where I can pass along specific feedback to contributors who are working hard on all the elements you mention in order that they might be able to improve them.
Let me address your points directly.
> still barely good enough to create a basic blog layout
I don't agree that this statement is accurate. Many talented folks have been creating excellent block themes with really nice blog layouts. Certainly basic layouts (as evidenced by the 2021, 2022 and 2023 default Themes) have been achievable for some time. Are there any specific basic blog layouts you can point to which you or others have been unable to achieve using the block editor?
> terrible user interface
I respect your opinion but I can't agree Gutenberg UI is terrible.
Too Much tutorial....Make me Boring...Until now....I have not finished my Website...It so difficult to follow and learn it....
Hi there
I wasn't sure if you found my tutorials boring or not. No worries if you did but I'm curious to hear how you feel I could improve them in future.
For more "tutorial" style content I would recommend checking out the official learn.wordpress.org/ video tutorials. There are more and more quality tutorials there which I hope will help you.
All the best with your site(s)!
Thank you Andrew. I really appreciate it 🙇
> I will have to work a bit with 6.1 once available
Yes that's a good point. Perhaps once you are more familiar you might consider letting me know your thoughts? It's super helpful to receive feedback from active users such as yourself.
> For now, watching this and other videos has me more convinced I made the right decision to opt for Gutenberg/FSE for a site I am updating
This is excellent to hear.
