There Is Lonely is the seventh track on Prince's 22nd album The Vault... Old Friends 4 Sale.
While specific recording dates are not known, initial tracking took place in mid-April 1992 at Platinum Studios, Melbourne, Australia (while also on the Diamonds And Pearls Tour, during the same set of sessions as Don't Talk 2 Strangers, The Rest Of My Life, Poor Little Bastard, Be My Mirror, Wow, 51 Hours and re-recordings of Make Believe and I'll Do Anything).
The song was written specifically for the James L. Brooks movie I'll Do Anything, and the track was re-recorded by unknown musicians for the movie, using Prince's original vocals; this version was included as the fourth track on a planned I'll Do Anything album.
While Prince was not directly involved in this version, it is included in the listing here as his own version was intended as a demo for the soundtrack version. When preview audience reactions to the music were overwhelmingly negative, all production numbers from the film were cut, and the album was abandoned. No further changes were made to Prince's original version before its release.
The lyrics refer to the Old Testament Biblical story of Cain and Abel, including the first instance of murder in the world, as told in Genesis 4

This projects such an overwhelming and all encompassing sadness. Just like the look on his face and in his eyes of all of the magazine covers that came out after he died. Such a heartbreaking sadness.

The world is still dark at the loss of the most incredible musician of anyone's time. He was everything wrapped up in the most beautiful gift from Heaven. Prince gave us his all in everything he accomplished in his short life on earth. Now we need to preserve his legacy no one as far as I am concerned can tarnish his life, his memory will live on 4 ever. Prince is in heaven with his son Amir & I believe the love of his life Denise, he is at peace now & may they all make beautiful music together in heaven. Peace to all & Love 4 one another & Be Wild.

Look at all those monuments around the world lit up in purple. Even a purple nebula in space photographed from the space station by Colonel Tim. Those 1st few weeks after his passing described perfectly in this song for many. Hoping they light them all up again on the 21st. One thing I have noticed after buying a bunch of his albums that have now suddenly become available is that you cannot play Prince's music low or have it as backgound. Its so much better loud where you get to hear all the little messages within the songs. On album no 12 and have not been disappointed yet. Jeez I could hold a block party with all his music I now have. Can the 21st be a celebration around the world please? Spreading purple joy and purple love 💜
