- This my review of a ESP8266 wifi IOT relay board supplied by ICStation.com
This is a module which can be controlled over its own access point, or connected to your wifi network. It only supports TCP socket communication, there is no MQTT or HTTP support

thank you for your video, you saved me more than the seller which has nothing about controlling. The application is not very familiar, buttons can't be graphical arrange and a button can't control two states like a switch, pressed first time to send a code pressing second time sending another code. For the beginning it's good even like this. Thanks again.
Very nice video Csongor. Well done with all necessary detail. The pilot wire in our central vacuum is shorted somewhere. Since the wiring is inside the wall, I cannot repair it. The vendor said I have to rewire the system pulling the pilot wire under the carpet, inside the wall, through the attic and under the house crawl space. The cost of the wire will probably be $100, not to mention the cost of labor. They also sell remote vacuum turn on for $180. So I turned to IOT. Using your video, I made it to work. To answer your question about Dynamic IP of the ESP8266, I assigned static IP for ESP8266 in the router. Everything is working like a charm and I spent less than $10. To complaint, I do not like the Wifi TCP/UDP Controller interface. Every time we lose power, I have to press the reset button and reestablish the communication. It may not be the software issue. It may be hardware issue. Anyway, thanks again for the nice video. Keep it coming.

This can be flashed with custom / DIY firmware, it uses serial interface to switch the relays.
If you want static IP, you can just tell your router to always reserve a specific IP for the MAC address of this wifi relay device.
That is what I did.
Thanks for the review I was going to purchase one but after your review, I don't think I will bother I will just design and make my own with an 8266-01 and two replays to switch when I want so thanks for saving my pocket
Yes, it is necessarily odd design as the ESP can handle the same job without the additional MCU. But still OK for those who cannot roll their own board.

Top you are well. Stay safe have not seen much from you for a while.
If it is like the single relay version then you should easily see that two of the pins are not connected. One is ground because it gets its ground through the device itself and the other is the TX pin which is why your not getting a signal back.
Hey great video very helpful! I was just wondering is there a way to communicate remotely using the app ie not on the same network as the module? Or is there a new version that does support this?
Not really. I would not open these small units up to the wide internet. There is no security on these at all. Ideally these would communicate with a server on the local network and the server is accessible from the outside internet. But technically you can open forward the port on your router and it will be accessible from outside using the public IP.
Is there a way to get to permanent mode 2? Because after power cycling, need to press S1 switch again for it to enter mode2 and connect to your wifi ap or router.
Important: the Relay Board needs to be showing the RED diode and NOT the BLUE diode on the board. I was trying to switch the relay and nothing was happening. If you want to change back to mode 1 (with the red light) press S2 while booting the relay.

Yes, sorry I did not talk about it. I am out of home, I can't check it right now, but usually the middle connector is common and above and below is normally open and normally closed. So you connect to the middle and above or below it. It is a single pole relay.
I am trying to connect it to my home Wi-Fi but I can't. None of those Android apps work anymore. I took out the esp8266 hooked it up with an Arduino, and connected it to the home Wi-Fi using AT commands. After that when I put it back on the relay board, it connects to my Wi-Fi momentarily upon boot, and then disconnects. Any idea why?
I have the ESP-01 (1Mb flash) and was able to upload firmware using both Arduino and Mongoose OS for additional functionality.

Kedves Csongor! Képzeld működik a redőny! Egyik gomb fel, másik gomb le! Van egy olyan funkció, hogy stop command after release button, ha ott beállítod, hogy a gomb elengedése után adjon egy relé off parancsot, akkor csak addig működik a relé, ameddig nyomod a gombot!

Thanks to Johan Tullberg in the comments now I got it. You need to press S2 while booting the relay. Reboot it again and you should be fine after that
I love that power cord. Did you make it or buy it?
You can buy these on ebay. Makes it easy to use any random power supply with a barrel jack end.
The ESP relay card I bought recently doesn't have a controller on the main the gpio from the ESP switches a transistor directly to control it

Not a dedicated command. You have to send and on and off after each other (maybe with a slight delay)

To have a fixed IP address, just reserve the IP address that the module acquired first time, in the router's DHCP address reservation table.
How did you uploar code to ESP? I think all adapters to this small ESP needs additional switch or jumpers to upload code ;/
Yes and no. The basic ESP-01 UARTs are not designed as a programmer, but you can make some modification like I did: th-cam.com/video/6uaIWZCRSz8/w-d-xo.html. But I also have another programmer which has the switch built in as well, like this red adapter: www.aliexpress.com/item/32971337222.html
Can this unit be set up to determine or sense voltage as triggers? - ie; relay 1 high voltage signal, then relay 2 , then back to relay 1 and repeat ?
No, there is no voltage sense in this unit.

But, would the main power lead to this relay supposed to come from my solar charger or directly from battery? I'm somewhat confused as how to wire this up. Thanks
I think the battery output of the solar charger and the battery is the same. But definitely not from the solar panels and they can have much higher voltage.
Csongor , your right solar produces more power and charger breaks it down for battery current charge. Be well, Thanks. I think I might need two chargers in parallel for this to work. What's your take?

what's that board in front of your PSU? Can't remember in which video i've seen it, and what it is...
It is just a prototyping board with some pin male and female headers, which makes it easy connect dupont cables to the PSU.

If I understood correctly, you have to be in the same LAN to control the device? I have purchased a similar, but 4ch device and was hoping to remotely control the PSU of a 3D-printer. What would I need to control a device like this via the internet remotely ?
Yes, it has to be on the LAN. Technically you can open it up to the wide internet, using port forwarding, but this is not a secure connection, so you should probably not mess with that. As a standalone device I would recommend something which comes with a mobile app (and cloud service), like a Sonoff (Basic of 4CH).

You are directly communicating with the device. You could open up the port on your router and control it via your public ip.

Szia, nem hiszem. Illetve nem tudok róla, de nem is tudom hol kellene keresni. Viszont lehet ESP Easy-t tenni az EPS-01-re (ven erről egy videóm), és akkor lehet HTTPn keresztül vezérlni mondjuk egy böngészőből.

tiwar87 Not a separate video. They are all different. Http means that the device has a web server so you can navigate to a page from your browser. Tcp is simple data communication. In all these cases you are calling the device directly so you need to know its IP address. MQTT is a whole different story designed for such small devices. You can probably find a video which explains how it works.

Szia! Remek a videó. Hasonló esp8266-os delay-es modult vásároltam, próbálom azt csinálni amit itt a videóban bemutatsz, azonban amikor az ESP8266 Smartconfig-ot megnyitom az SSID: után jelenik meg, és sehogy sem sikerül a hálózatot azonosítanom, mi lehet a probléma?
Sajnos nem sok minden tudok erre mondani. Ezek vagy mennek vagy nem mennek. Legyen viszontleg közel a mobil meg a relé is a wifi routerhez, ezeknek gyengébb a wifi vevője mint a telefonnak. És csak 2.4GHz-es wifit támogat, az 5GHz-eset nem (de általában az alap az 2.6GHz).

What are the S1 / S2 buttons doing? Are they connected to any of the pins?
Setting up the various modes. I explain in the video. Those are only connected to the second mcu.
Is there any wifi relay like that which uses 240V AC as main supply? I cannot find them on aliexpress. I only found 5v, 12v and 24v.
I am not aware either. Sonoff Dual and similar relays run from mains, but those are "branded" models
You can locked down you IP address using DHCP. Assigning IP address to that particular MAC address.
Yes, I ended up doing that for my Google Home as well, but I did not know that when I was recording the video.

How do I activate the 2 relays in a custom code in arduino skect? What would it be like for me to drive 4 relays, since I only have 2 gpio?
I don't know. There is an another microcontroller on the board which is controlling the relays. The ESP talks to this microcontroller over serial. But I am not sure about how it is done. I have done a second video on this board where I flashed the ESP Easy on this. They have implemented the communication between the ESP and the micro. Maybe you could look at that code and figure out how it is done.

No, this will never work with eWeLink.

This only works when you are on the same network as the device.
ESP8266 smartconfig can't read my network ssid and not allowing me to write it my self

hello .. can someone help me please ? is possible to control a relay and for exapmle a step motor in the same time? becuase we have only one tx and one rx one the esp8266 module. can the arduino recognise the different data that the esp module is sending or is possible that the esp module sends a different data for each action? thank you in advance
I am sorry, but I don't understand you. The ESP-01 module only has a few outputs, therefore you can only control 1 or 2 devices. You can use a bigger ESP8266 like a nodeMCU or Wemos D1 mini, where you have more pins.

You can operate directly. It has a mode where it creates and access point and you can connect directly. I have seen that in the documentation, but I did not test it.

I have problem with my Sonoff switch, it is not working without moden/router, I unable to connect my phone directly to it....
Sonoff uses a cloud service. That will never connect to your phone directly. It does not work unless you have active internet connection.

Yes. But I would still recommend to have router. Even if it does not have internet connection, all devices connect to your router and when your phone connects to the same router you can control all of them, instead of having to connect to each of them individually. This is of course if you are planning to have more devices. And if you like Sonoff and don't want to build stuff on your own, you can also re-flash the firmware on that. You can write your arduino code, or use on of the available firmwares like ESPurna, Tasmota, ESP Easy and control them that way.
What is the name of app
Can we connect this to heroku server with a Node.js web app and then we can control this from any part of the world using mobile phone with internet.
Whenever we press the On button in the mobile phone, it should send command to Node.js web app in Heroku server. Then the web app will send the command to this module.
Is it possible like this?
If not possible, what else will you suggest ?
Sorry, but I am not familiar with these components that you mention here. I think many frameworks can communicate over TCP, it is just not as common and straight forward and HTTP or MQTT.

while i was trying to connect using this app ESP8266 SmartConfig, it fails, ,but on the module, the blue light is on, and green is blinking, but even after multiple attempts to connect from my android app, it didnt connect, any guesses why?

No, this is a cheap product for local control. It does not integrate with anything on its own.
I got that device, and got a payback for that because but it arrives 'broken'.: Symtom is Blue led from main board is not working ,... only red led of ESP is on.
Do you know how to reset it ?
Before taking the decision to flash ESP, I woul klike to know if somebody knows the consequence of that.
If I flash the esp , will it be possible to have response from the main board

The firmwares are all open source so I bet you could make it work in theory but these cards are cheap to buy so probably not worth

you can use this with the regular arduino firmware instead of the at firmware by removing the RX jumper and writing serial commands to control both relays, i forgot exactly how to but when i remember ill update this comment

with this you can control them using Blynk IOT, remoteXY or homeasisstant, or even with another microcontroller
I think it would be possible. But honestly you are probably better off buying a simple relay board and control them directly. Unless you need to save one output.

but yes in most cases individual relay boards are a better option, i found a board with 8 relays for around the same price.
the only benefit of this serial method is that it only uses 1 pin to control multiple relays, so if you're doing a massive iot project or your board has not enough GPIO, this could be useful

You remove the ESP-01 module and program it separately. I have a separate video on how to put ESP Easy firmware on it: th-cam.com/video/i_CnBcQgdGk/w-d-xo.html. I don't know how to program the STM micro controlling the relay, so in my example, that code remains the same.
When I look at the devices connected to my router, my router gives me the option of reserving the current IP address for that device.
Yes, I realized that. You can assign a "fixed IP" to a MAC address on most routers. I found this out after the video.

Sajnos passzolom. Nekem semmi bajom nem volt vele. Egyebkent latszik a esp altal generalt wifi halozat? Melegedes ok, de azert nem egetoen forro a chip. Van a rele nyak lapon feszultseg szabalyzo igy azzal nem lehet baj. De mivel kinai tomegtermekrol van szo az esp lehet hibas. De ha a wifi halozat latszik akkor az is mukodik...

Hi dear, I've bought 1 esp8266 module relay 12v 1ch and 1 esp8622 module 12v 2ch. I have used both esp01 for other arduino projects. Now I have a genuine esp01 ma it doesn't work with modules. Please, can you send me sketch to write into esp with Arduino ide? thanks 🙏

Why does it need extra, support circuitry... i thought it was WiFi on a chip... and its not!
I don't know why it was designed this way. But it is. ESP could handle the Wifi and switching the relay as well, it would not need a separate MCU.

10 minutes in and the board comes across as disastrous, in that it is out of date and cumbersome. To be avoided! There are widely available, inexpensive, modern and accessible alternatives with an API and (if ever required) customisable firmware. Thanks for the review.

That doesn´t help ! 1. the app doesn´t run , 2. AP Mode is on Red, 3. what means the blinking-code ? how to see which state is the modul ? there are many questions but no manual. This one wasted my time (days)
