I actually prefer the SD-1's sound over the SM7b's on Bandrew's voice. It doesnt have that resonant stuff in the mids compared to the SM7b. A good alternative to the SM7b imho.
For $300 I personally think it would be hard to justify getting this when the sE Dynacaster exists… that mic just has way too much functionality for the money
I'll give you some inside baseball. Internal Shockmounting is kinda a keystone to SM7b's take apart any of them and you'll see the rubber doughnut. every company does it slightly different of course. Shure has a whole AES paper on the topic and sells the shockmount mechanism as a stand alone shockmount. a big part of the tone of the mic has to do with the capsule membranes relation to the metal body. A microphone is an electro-acoustical mechanical device. we had to get that right and consistent. Don't forget UA purchased Bock Audio. This didn't go out before it passed through our hands for input and we had a list. I can't go into it in detail but I assure you its different than the mics rebranded under different company names. the changes we made are proprietary to UA.
Thank you very much for the input. You may find a video coming out today comparing the UA SD-1 to Music Villa MV-3 so people can hear how they compare. The sound is significantly different to me so it doesn't seem like a simple rebrand. I think there will continue to be pushback on it though because people will just assume it's the same $80 Thomann or $175 MV3 with the price cranked up. Some kind of explainer from UA discussing how you have done everything would probably help the perception a bit, because I imagine some people are thinking that there's not an additional $220 or $125 value added. That's just my take as a reviewer on youtube after looking at the comments. Best of luck.
...it actually sounds great Like, I'd take it over an SM7B personally for less money. The SM7B sounds a little more cozy and dark, the SD-1 a bit more condensery. I'd take a guess and say that the SD-1 might be a little better for people, who are not only using the microphone for broadcasting, but also singing, which seems like a pretty common combination.
I never liked the SM7 as a voiceover mic. Cozy and dark is a nice description for its sound but it comes across to me as muffled sounding in the mids and boomy due to a strong proximity effect. RE20's are much better to my ears.
The SM7B had very washed out high end/Mid frequencies, the UA SD-1 Was FAR more clear, the only comparison I could make is the RE20, which did have better response all around, but I believe the SD-1 beats it when you bring price into the mix. $120~ cheaper is a significant difference.
I'm glad it's a lot more clean sounding than the SM7B. I never found a use for it on any of the projects I did during my college courses for audio work, it was just too muddy for me
Having used the Shure SM7b for a long time, I think I can use this mic to supplement a group of Sm7Bs. I can use it solo too for broadcast and recordings. I agree with Bandrew, the neutral setting's where you should stay at.
For anybody interested: There was a UA mic before :D it was just sold in kit form and doesn't even seem to have a proper name! It's labeled with "volt"
This seems like a great microphone for people looking to play acoustic guitar and record albums with a home setup. Not as good as the competition as a podcast type microphone IMO, but for musicians looking to play some non-electric guitars and maybe do some vocals with them it seems to be quite great.
I was waiting for this video since day 1 it was announced. About the windscreen, I think there is some difference in the top end. Not a big deal, like the SM7b And in the comparison, the Behringer sounds so cool to be that cheap. But the SM7b and the RE20 beat the SD-1. The mic is not bad but it definitely doesn''t sound better that the one it tries to beat.
Great video, as always. The first thing I noticed is that it doesn’t look quite as pleasing as the sm7b and other mics. I think the white finish would work in an empty space or a studio designed with looks more prominently in mind (such as Sanjay C’s video where he discusses this mic.) i personally like your studio better, as I think a more “cluttered” )for lack of better words) environment makes for easier productivity. However, if I were designing a microphone I would want it to look right in any camera frame and in any room. I think it looks very pleasing, it just sticks out too much for my liking.
@Bandrew After the presence boost test and before the UA preamp you should have done another bit with the mic in "normal mode". This would help give a better idea of the presence mode setting and also help show the difference between the Scarlett preamp and the UA. Being super picky here but as you are normally so incredibly amazing with every aspect of how you compare things I thought I would mention. Very good competitor to SM7! As a musician and former Radio Master Control Room Operator, I can say that the majority of these mics would suffice if the pricing was under budget --- except for the MXL: That was pure rubbish!!! In fact it was so bad I have to ask if the mic is not in damaged condition. I have 2 of their mics; 990 and V67G and especially the latter is a first class act.
Wonder if we should stop using the word "competitor"? Cuz I've noticed especially with the release of this mic the recording community tends to get unnecessarily Territorial and competitive about these things lol(not saying you). Really it's no competition for us, just a new option! As all these mics will perform slightly differently from the other, but I fully agree with you, the MXL stood out as a terrible sound amidst all the rest of these especially at the price point that they're asking

By the way, your point regarding the need for a UA interface in order to use the SD-1 Presets is another 'red flag' that conveniently is not clearly stated in the UA promotional material for this mic. In closing I should say that I'm a huge fan of UA gear. Even though it's expensive, it delivers exceptional value. I use the Apollo Twin for VO work and love it. And I've always thought of UA as an innovator. And that's precisely why I'm so disappointed in this microphone offering. I have no idea about the T-Bone BC500. I haven’t used one, so I can’t say that. UA did post on gear sluts about it though saying it’s the same factory and factory as the Music Villa MV3 and Advanced Audio DM7 but they have made changes to it. I don’t have either of those mics yet so I’m unable to do any kind of direct side by side comparison. To address the point of a person on a budget…if the mic were to sound the same as the T-Bone, then absolutely it would make sene to get the mic that is under $100 instead of paying $300. Unfortunately I don’t have it so I can’t speak to that at this time though.
You have hands down the best reviews on mics my dude. I want to get a simple USB mic and I'm looking at the Samson C10U Pro from your best under $100 video but my main hesitation is the lack of controls on the Mic. Do you have a review or any thoughts on the Samson Satellite? Otherise, I might go with something like the Mackie EM-USB.
Normally I really like UA stuff, but it's too similar to the Music Villa MV-3. Same specs, almost the same body and enclosure besides the grill. I want to hear an AB test between the two before I'm convinced they're not the same mic.
would you recommend this mic for voiceovers? Now you can use it with any interface. Cause UAD Spark Native plugins. Get the Hemisphere and voila. No need Apollos anymore. So its even a better deal this SD1 and sounds great!.
This mic sounds awesome. I've been looking for a mic for recording my paino while I stream, only issue is I'm not very familiar with mics. Would this be a good mic for beginners? And would it be good for streaming?
That looks exactly like the Shure SM7B lol but a very nice Mic nonetheless. I like the Software that comes with it. I see Shure going after these guys If it gets popular due to the similarities.
I say it's crazy for a respectable company to make their product so close to another product. I mean you can see it a mile away. Shure can win anything they will demand if it came to that but I hope not.
I surprised how great this mic sounds. I like it better then the procaster and mv7(x), as well as the podmic. Looks like this is the smb7 killer, for $100 less. Better the most mics in that price range.

For me this mic sounds much better than the sm7b for voice work. I hate how the sm7b makes my voice sound thin and nasally. Not sure I’d get it because I have the icon pro too, but it sounds pretty good. I’d do a custom paint job on it though because the white is not for me at all.
Looking to get my first dynamic mic, and I was looking at something with really good shock rejection, and this seemed great. But I don't have UA interface :( But do I actually need to have it though? Or would you recommend another mic?
Hmm. I was actually surprised. I have all condensers and 1 sm58. I actually thought the sd1 sounded better than all of them (besides the Neumann of course). I want a dynamic and am between the sm7 and this one. I actually didn’t think the sm7 sounded great here. The uad maybe sounded a bit more thin but I thought the clarity was much better.
Not a fair comparison indeed hahaha that Neuman is so beautiful but all in all for the price that SD-1 isnt bad though I think for the price the Warm Audio WA47jr is a better deal.

@@Podcastage - Ya they just released a new condenser that comes with modelling but thanks to that, they're upgrading the SD-1 with some models as well. I tried it out and its not bad, but I have nowhere near the knowledge and time into mics as you have. So would really love some technical thoughts on how close the modelling is and what the cons are over having the real mic

Totally agree with Borut above-dynamic is the way to go! What are you going to be recording? That might help determine which dynamic mics would be best for you.
Personally I don’t recommend any studio condenser in an open area even nt1 even with any “portable” studio even it might looks like u are professional. For use in open area, stage performer is always the one to go for, if u really want a condenser try to get a handheld condenser, otherwise podcasting dynamic is an option as well, go to check Brandrew’s SE Dynacaster review maybe that's ur go for if u want something looks more professional than those handheld ones... Even I don't think that should be a concern...
Hello Brother! As always great review and a very wholesome opinion, I would just want to state that this is a kinda nice sounding microphone, definitely has that shine to it, which personally I am not a fan of, but a lot of people are, but I still feel that the handhelds gave this guy some very nice competition, infact the 8500 & the V7 sounded very nice, my favourite out of the broadcast form factor mic comparisons was definitely the Shure SM7B very closely followed by the Procaster which is a great value for money tbh and it continues doing that time and again. I have had this complaint with UA for some time now that they make most stuff compatible with just their high end interfaces which many beginners or podcasters can’t even afford, so that makes it utterly pointless, also I think most manufacturers these days just bring out broadcast mics claiming their product is an alternative/killer of the SM7B, but they somehow discount the fact that there already exists a worthy alternative and that is the RE20, all these just look like rip-offs and that sometimes makes me laugh, infact paint this guy black & most won’t be able to even tell which one is the SM7B, lol. Overall I think its a fine mic, has the UA branding and an acceptable sound, but it doesn’t get me too interested, however your videos are as always super amazing and I love you, please take care and you have my best wishes and warm regards as always🙏🏻😁

I bought 3 pieces 6 month ago and was shocked. Please, please, find the new one and make comparison!!!!! Rode answered me by email that they did not changed anything, but i made 1 to 1 test and the sound of all 3 mics are DEFINITELY not the same as the old one. The old one sounded very close to SM7B.

RE20 is my favorite dynamic mic. I used RE20"s for nearly 20 years in my radio broadcast days.

It sounds good, but the Dynacaster seems more flexible at the same price point, and I prefer the Dynacaster's spoken word sound.

My room is not sound-treated so I'm having a hard time using a condenser mic but my worry is having to turn up the gain for this dynamic mic so it can pick up my voice ( I've noticed in some reviews that the SD-1 has a low hiss). Now you can use it with any interface. Cause UAD Spark Native plugins. Get the Hemisphere and voila. No need Apollos anymore. So its even a better deal this SD1 and sounds great!.
This mic sounds awesome. I've been looking for a mic for recording my paino while I stream, only issue is I'm not very familiar with mics. Would this be a good mic for beginners? And would it be good for streaming?
Technically, you could use UA satellites to get at the presets. Still an expensive way to get at features the manufacturer intends you to use...
That looks exactly like the Shure SM7B lol but a very nice Mic nonetheless. I like the Software that comes with it. I see Shure going after these guys If it gets popular due to the similarities.
I say it's crazy for a respectable company to make their product so close to another product. I mean you can see it a mile away. Shure can win anything they will demand if it came to that but I hope not.
I think it sounds musically exciting on singing vocals… was surprised by that!

I surprised how great this mic sounds. I like it better then the procaster and mv7(x), as well as the podmic. Looks like this is the smb7 killer, for $100 less. Better the most mics in that price range.

Can you please make a video of the recommended microphones for nasally voices please? 🙏 Been searching which dynamic mics could handle those kinds of issues my nasally voice is facing in audio.
For me this mic sounds much better than the sm7b for voice work. I hate how the sm7b makes my voice sound thin and nasally. Not sure I’d get it because I have the icon pro too, but it sounds pretty good.
I’d do a custom paint job on it though because the white is not for me at all.
I sometimes wonder if those that make an SM7B-like microphone has at least one person involved in making the SM7B itself

Looking to get my first dynamic mic, and I was looking at something with really good shock rejection, and this seemed great. But I don't have UA interface :( But do I actually need to have it though? Or would you recommend another mic?
It will work with any interface, but you just won’t get the presets as those are only with the UA interfaces.
I like it, it's either this or the Dynacaster right now.
But I just got the RE20 yesterday because I got bored with how dark the SM7b is... dang

Hmm. I was actually surprised. I have all condensers and 1 sm58. I actually thought the sd1 sounded better than all of them (besides the Neumann of course).
I want a dynamic and am between the sm7 and this one. I actually didn’t think the sm7 sounded great here. The uad maybe sounded a bit more thin but I thought the clarity was much better.
Not a fair comparison indeed hahaha that Neuman is so beautiful but all in all for the price that SD-1 isnt bad though I think for the price the Warm Audio WA47jr is a better deal.

Is this a better deal then AT2035? I'm wondering what to do... I like it because it's dynamic but not sure about the overall quality. Price is pretty similar in my country.
Can you do a comparison / review of this mic now that it's got Hemisphere modelling. Especially since it tries to model the SM7b and the RE20? I'm curious how good or bad that modelling is in your opinion.

@@Podcastage - Ya they just released a new condenser that comes with modelling but thanks to that, they're upgrading the SD-1 with some models as well. I tried it out and its not bad, but I have nowhere near the knowledge and time into mics as you have. So would really love some technical thoughts on how close the modelling is and what the cons are over having the real mic

To my ears, Shure SM7B sounds classier, very pleasant to listen to.
I too would pick the SM7b every time over this. It's just one of my all time favorite mics. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it as well.
It looks a bit like the t.bone bc500 from Thomann., which is quite a bit cheaper

Hey podcastage! I’m gonna be ordering a rode nt1 mic, my question is I’m gonna be in a open area, will the rode nt1 microphone be good in a open area, (with a kaotica eyeball or acoustic reflection panel?) I’m an 12 yro artist and producer btw!
Condenser microphones pick up more of the room. I think a dynamic microphone would suit you better (if I understand "open area" correctly). Good luck!

Don't get a condenser mic if youre going to record in your living room
Personally I don’t recommend any studio condenser in an open area even nt1 even with any “portable” studio even it might looks like u are professional. For use in open area, stage performer is always the one to go for, if u really want a condenser try to get a handheld condenser, otherwise podcasting dynamic is an option as well, go to check Brandrew’s SE Dynacaster review maybe that's ur go for if u want something looks more professional than those handheld ones... Even I don't think that should be a concern...

Hello Brother! As always great review and a very wholesome opinion, I would just want to state that this is a kinda nice sounding microphone, definitely has that shine to it, which personally I am not a fan of, but a lot of people are, but I still feel that the handhelds gave this guy some very nice competition, infact the 8500 & the V7 sounded very nice, my favourite out of the broadcast form factor mic comparisons was definitely the Shure SM7B very closely followed by the Procaster which is a great value for money tbh and it continues doing that time and again. I have had this complaint with UA for some time now that they make most stuff compatible with just their high end interfaces which many beginners or podcasters can’t even afford, so that makes it utterly pointless, also I think most manufacturers these days just bring out broadcast mics claiming their product is an alternative/killer of the SM7B, but they somehow discount the fact that there already exists a worthy alternative and that is the RE20, all these just look like rip-offs and that sometimes makes me laugh, infact paint this guy black & most won’t be able to even tell which one is the SM7B, lol. Overall I think its a fine mic, has the UA branding and an acceptable sound, but it doesn’t get me too interested, however your videos are as always super amazing and I love you, please take care and you have my best wishes and warm regards as always🙏🏻😁

hey,man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! please compare your old PROCASTER with the new one!!!! Seems like RODE changed it and placed into PROCASTER podmic capsule. I bought 3 pieces 6 month ago and was shocked. Please, please, find the new one and make comparison!!!!! Rode answered me by email that they did not changed anything, but i made 1 to 1 test and the sound of all 3 mics are DEFINITELY not the same as the old one. The old one sounded very close to SM7B.
