I remember being a kid in south Alabama watching the helicopters from Ft. Rucker fly over my house all day back in the mid 90s. To this day I'll still run outside to see a helicopter fly over the house. It can be frustrating for me when I talk to people about planes for two reasons. The first reason is they never seem to quite understand how deep aviation runs in me. The second reason is they always ask if I'm a pilot and I always have to say no. See growing up we didn't have a lot of money. We did ok but I remember days of surviving off dollar store cans of soup and sleeping on the couch because we didn't have an extra bedroom at time. I think because of this my parents really never encouraged my passion for aviation. I ended up dropping out of highschool my senior year for various reasons but still ended up going to college for a nonsense degree that I never used. However I remember being like 21 years old thinking how was I ever going to convince someone to pay me $15 an hour. I'd been working on and off since I was 14 but never for more than just pennies usually. Then I met a girl and she got pregnant when I was 22. At that moment my perspective changed. To make a long story short I got busy and after years of late nights, tears, failure, and success I built a career in information technology. So here I am 11 years later interviewing for jobs over 6 figures. I've started getting back in touch with the aviation community over the last couple a years by volunteering with the Civil Air Patrol. Mostly because I wanted to be part of helping kids in the area have a program involving aviation. So now the next step is to get myself financially squared away so I can start actually flying. I saw all that to say that I like videos like this because it helps keep the dream alive.

I have been flying since 1991 and can truly relate to what you talk about in this video. No plane yet, just a commercial licence with a multi engine rating. Some day!!! Keep up the good work.
Fantastic story Charlie. Thank you for sharing. Really enjoying your channel. My story is almost identical. After flying (renting) 172s for almost 10 years, I just picked up a 1978 182RG. Absolutely amazing plane, and the experience is equally amazing. Keep sharing your story. Cheers.

Thanks Charlie, that was a great story. Getting my Peterson STOL Cessna 182 was a crazy story - it took years, and was totally unexpected. Will be doing a video on that story on my channel soon.
Your videos are refreshing and a simple and down to earth expression of yourself. Thanks for making them and especially this one. I’m getting back into flying myself as a retired Navy helicopter pilot. It was over 20 years since I flew a fixed wing aircraft, but it was just like riding a bike, although I can use a lot more proficiency. Keep these videos coming!
Just started again after 18 years off.. Solo’d last week after some quality dual time. Was an amazing feeling. I get your story.. thanks for sharing. I’m also looking at 182s. Be a great plane for up here in the Ontario.
Charlie, I love your story and your love of aviation. Watching you videos are very inspiring to me as someone who is just starting out in aviation. I would like to meet you one day and maybe fly with you. Your passion for flying is contagious. Thank you for makinf these videos and sharing your flight experiences.
Great story! I also remember walking around my local airport as a much younger man looking at Cessnas and Pipers (and especially the instrument panels) and hoping one day to know how to fly (before airports were fenced off after 9/11). I eventually did fly and even secured my CFI. Work and business commitments soon got in the way and I stopped flying for a time but now having retired I am back to looking for my own plane again (I previously owned 2 that were leasebacks to the local club). Once you fly it is VERY hard to stay away for long! Thanks for your channel and the great content.
Thanks for sharing more of your aviation journey! We are very blessed to live in a time when such a thing as owning and flying a plane is possible. Not quite there myself but making progress...enjoying the videos!
Thanks for sharing your story!! I know it'll still be a while until I can own my own plane but you inspire me! I can't wait to feel that deep gratitude for my own plane!! I have about 15 hours dual, I'm still working on getting my medical, it's been a little more complicated for me but I'm pressing on and spending the time (and money) to make it happen. It's been a while since I've flown but I have not and will not let go of my dream!! Cheers

Thank you for created this video. Have had a passion for flying like you have. Been trying to finally make the leap and start up some lessons. I am probably a couple of months out, but I am going to make it happen. This is inspiring. Thank You!
Great video and good info! Hopefully that can help me in the near future as I’m planning on starting my training soon and hopefully purchasing an airplane in the not too distant future!
Good video Charlie. I took a slightly different radial! PPL in my 6th decade (never give up) and I just purchased a 172. I agree that the 182 is a great all around airplane but I want to build experience and see if the rest of my family develops interest. The pros being lower cost across the board and I have a good trainer if the family shows interest. If we don't enjoy it (perish the thought) I'm not out as much and also, my first plane doesn't necessarily have to be my last! I did consider a few 182s but you have to act quick with todays market and as a first time buyer, I was a little more than apprehensive (read, not quick). I'll let you know how it turns out.
Awesome. I don't think you'll ever regret owning a 172. Looking back on my logbook I could have still accomplished 95% of the missions in a 172 vs. a 182. Glad I have the 182 but the 172 is an awesome machine. There's a reason it's the world's most popular GA aircraft.
I too am approaching my 6th decade and I am pursuing GA for the first time. I have two sons and a nephew that have some degree of love for aviation - hopefully, one becomes my partner and can let me fly when health goes the wrong way. Long term planning, even at our age! Best wishes too you!
Wow your story starts off exectly like mine! Dreamt of being a pilot since i was like 8 fought and fought and finally got my ppl at 25 and havnt been able to fly the past 2 years for Financials...cant wait to get back at it it kills me
D U D E ! ! ! Your story is OMG so awesome. You would crap if you heard how i got started in aviation and went to flight school. You are soooo inspiring with your stories and the way you explain things. You would be so fun to hang out with and fly with I'm sure. You are a lot like some of my other friends here that own there own Piper Cherokee's that i fly with. Good looking out dude. Love your channel. Keep up the great work. Are you into simming at all? I also have a really cool expensive flight sim setup. I fly the A321 on that. Fun airliner to fly.
Thanks for the positive feedback! Glad you are enjoying the content. And no I don't currently sim... I used to when I was younger and I'm jealous of the technology that is currently available. The new MSFS looks incredible.
My dad was a WW2 aviator and installed my love for aviation, but we never pursued that dream. This past Thursday, My son flew right seat with a friend who is a CFI 2 and I - he loved it! First GA flight - he took off and flew about an hour. Dad passed in February and my intent is to use the inheritance to purchase the GA aircraft, complete my PPC and hope my son pursues his in time to be my partner and eventually inherit the aircraft.
"Nobody does anything in Texas when it's cold" True... except maybe in deer season when the stand has a heater in it :) You're a good but younger than me but your story is similar. Loved flying, stopped flying (life), got back in the air 3 years ago, and instrument rating training begins again in about 2 weeks (I was almost there when I stopped flying). C182's and C172's are godaweful expensive :( But the C182 is on my list of things that I need to own... I don't need or want a G1000... just equipped for traveling.
Cool story bro!!! No, but seriously, I live a few hours away from you (SJT). I had the same feeling of being outside of the fence and always wanted to fly! I could never afford a plane, so I bought a paramotor instead! I Just registered on IACRA and have an instructor lined lined up, but I think that it is really awesome that you are trying to help others get a taste of flight. Awesome informational videos! One of these days I'll be flying too!
@@AirplaneAcademy you should definitely go for an introductory flight! You’d probably have to go on a powered parachute (PPC), but it’s a similar experience!!!
I am going on a discovery flight soon, hopefully going to get my pilots license , love watching your videos, what year is your plane? I was thinking about the 172, but I love the 182, yours looks great!
Nice video so thank you for that. Now that I can afford to fly or even buy a plane because of health problems I can’t get my PPL. I think I had around 6 hours back in the mid 80s but stopped because of finances. Family first always. I follow all you because I can’t fly so please keep up the videos.
About to finish up my flight training (commercial checkride this coming week) and I dream of having my own plane in the not to distant future. In my opinion the 182 (probably turbo for me because I live out west) is the perfect, do it all single for a first time owner that will mostly fly solo or with 1 other person. Cheers and be safe.
Awesome video man. I'm still on the other side of the fence. I absolutely cant wait to get my ppl. Just starting to try and get my 3rd class medical. On the .Gov website I cant find an AME near me unfortunetly.
I'd look into the nearest FSDO (Flight Standards District Office) and give them a call and ask for the nearest AME's. They should have a list. Don't give up on the dream! Excited for you.
Hey man Just getting started in aviation. I really want to but my own plane but my budget is about half of yours. Just feel like renting could be going towards my own. I’m out here in Lubbock Texas!
When i was 7 my Mum was driving me to footy training and because the town i lived in was so small 2 towns meged into 1 team and the training ground would alternate and we were at the othe town. As we drove into the town i was looking out the window and spotted what from memory looked like a 152 or 172 and that was when i promised that one day i would get that plane in the air
Trying to figure out the cheapest path to get a pilot license. Prices have skyrocketed the past few years appreciate if you found do a video on that topic
The more money I make, the more inflation and interest increases and the price of airplanes keep going higher and higher. If I rent it intereferes with saving for an airplane of my own. Been flying over 23 years and still on the outside of the fence looking in.
Nice looking plane . . . fer sure (spoken with a Texas accent). I was born Texan who later joined the US Air Force. Flew in the C-9A Nightingale. Anyway, I'm in the same boat looking for a decent plane that will get me places. I've narrowed it down to five planes- Kitfox LSA 914 UL, Rans S-21, Maule MX-7 180C (leading the list for tail draggers which I have no experience flying) Pipistrelle Panthera (for speed and efficiency but must be willing to cough up $600K) or it's look-a-like but much cheaper (under $200K)- the Risen- and its 1,800 mile range. I'm keeping a proverbial finger in the wind in case something else pops up but there's nothing like waking up and breathing the cool dry air of Texas to go fly.
They’re value fluctuates on many factors. Engine time, airframe time, aircraft logbooks, avionics, etc. Not only that, maintenance on planes in general is typically stupid good with annuals per FAA, which helps them keep their value.
@@mdye.04 errrr I don’t think annuals is why they keep their value. They keep their value because they have already lost all their value and have nowhere to depreciate. Think about a 10 year old car, a 50 year old aircraft is the same. It just won’t get any cheaper.
It's that second 100k that really hurts - engine overhaul, paint, avionics upgrade. I need a partner, but I have no intention of ever selling that aircraft. In that frame, the purchase price is irrelevant - maintenance costs is the issue.
Damn i wish i could meet you! I am as crazy about aviation as you are but yet flying oportunities is few and far between doesnt matter what can take me up i jump at every oportunity jiro, microlight, cessna, iwould even go up with a kite
I too own a '75 182. Nice airplanes. I'm upgrading to a twin, so if anyone is looking for a 182, mine is gonna be for sale soon. He's right though, they are awesome airplanes.
Sadly thx to Covid this is not a good idea today. 5 years ago you could buy a great aircraft for $50K or less. Today it's hard to find the same plane for $150K and most are junkers at TBO or in original condition that need an additional $50K in upgrades to get it truly airworthy with a decent cockpit upgrade.
I wish I could get my wife on board. It takes 3 1/2 to 4 hours to go check on her dad and my family but I could fly it in no time. We could also be at the OBX in no time. But she has no interest in flying
@@AirplaneAcademy We are at the point of purchasing and while the 182 would fit our mission perfectly, I am still finishing my licence and my partner is wanting to start. Would you recommend buying a 172 for us to both learn in and get at least 100 hours each before upgrading to the 182? We are looking to purchase because hire rates here in Australia for a C172S are AU$392.00 dual and AU$265.00 solo and approx. AU$100 more per hour for a 182.
PS, yes, not sure how hard it is to flare the 182 as it's heavy in the nose. I know I will need to use trim. I do not have the strongest of hands. I do really like the 182 and I am currently a student pilot.
Definitely not too late. Not at all. As for working and training, just have to try to find a rhythm where you can dedicate time to it and try to not have to take long pauses in your training. For most people this looks like flying on the weekends and studying during the week. Some people can squeeze in a lesson at 6am at first light and still get to work on time. Just depends on your schedule. But if you decide you really want to do it, I'll bet you'll be able to find a way.
If you select someone from Northern Illinois/Southern Wisconsin, let me know. I can take them up for free. I'm an airline guy, but also an active CFI with over 20,000 hours experience. I enjoy giving first flights to aspiring pilots.
So cool. Thank you for that offer! I'm trying to think if there is a way to connect willing pilots and folks interested in flying and way that is feasible from a logistics and liability perspective. I want to start by paying for the discovery flights through a school, but there are many generous pilots like you that would also like to participate. I'd like to find a way to connect the dots.
dope af....been watching your channel for a while, how come you didn't become an airline pilot? Im hoping to eventually be in a financial situation where I too can buy a plane.. hopefully I can hit you up for assistance
Thanks! It's a good question. I have thought for countless hours about becoming a professional pilot, but I really love business and entrepreneurship and have decided I would rather own and run my own business that afford me to fly how and when I want, rather than to fly for the airlines.
@@AirplaneAcademy I have have heard that statement from multiple folks. Let's face it, being a ATP may pay well, but it's still a job - no freedom like we have in GA.

Hi there - the first 3 discovery flights will be for US-based applicants, as the form suggests, however I would still encourage you to apply. There might be other follow-on activity that happens as part of this initiative. There's been way more interest than I even expected so I'm trying to sort through it all.
Hi, Charlie! Thanks for your great videos. I'm starting my instrument training soon and want to know if you have recommendations for online instrument ground schools?
Awesome! I did King School's for commercial ground and really enjoyed it. Their humor is quirky but if that doesn't bother you too much, the information is super solid and it's very digestible. That's the only one I have personally used.

I took am looking forward in getting me a 182 also. Thanks for supporting the dream.
Just started again after 18 years off.. Solo’d last week after some quality dual time. Was an amazing feeling. I get your story.. thanks for sharing. I’m also looking at 182s. Be a great plane for up here in the Ontario.
5:24 wow you see how things work out for you and how everything WILL get aligned when you go for the things that you really want
Excellent as always.... you really should consider writing a book. I would buy it.
Thanks so much! Really appreciate you saying this.
Charlie, I love your story and your love of aviation. Watching you videos are very inspiring to me as someone who is just starting out in aviation. I would like to meet you one day and maybe fly with you. Your passion for flying is contagious. Thank you for makinf these videos and sharing your flight experiences.
Thanks so much! I really appreciate your kind words. I'm so glad the videos are helpful.
Great Video!!! Thanks for your encouragement!!!
Wonderful story, Charlie! Thanks for your sincerity and positivity!
Fortunate enough to have the bug bite me at an early age and now I fly for the Navy. I love what you are doing man. keep it up.
That's awesome! Thank you so much for your service!
Thanks for sharing your story. I can relate to so much of what you are saying. Congratulations on getting back into it, that is so so awesome.
I've been watching these videos and really enjoy them and want to thank you for giving to the general aviation community.
Thanks so much! I'm glad you are enjoying them!
Great post!...Securing my hangar at KDWH was actually harder than finding a plane.
Congratulations on buying your own plane. I too am on the hunt though for an older 182.
Great story, loved it. desire, visualization, work, good advice. man everything lined up... amazing. congratulations...
Thanks for sharing more of your aviation journey! We are very blessed to live in a time when such a thing as owning and flying a plane is possible. Not quite there myself but making progress...enjoying the videos!
Yes, definitely blessed! Glad you are enjoying the videos!
Great video! Congratulations to you on all your aviation successes!
Great story, thanks for sharing..
Cheers
So awesome. Never let go of the dream!!
Such an awesome story thank you for telling.
Glad you enjoyed!
Hey Charlie, thank you SOO much for these videos. Much a blessing! I am super inspired! Keep 'em comin'!!
So glad you enjoy them!
so sorry, trying to reach my old college mate who is from India and met you.
Nevermind? I'm at Corpus Christi Naval Air Station, located in southeast Texas, on the southern coast of Corpus Christi Bay. I'm working as the Cyber information consultant and CCTV information carrier naval officer. Don't post much here, but you can reach my official Gmail at (megsaudibert@gmail.com) and drop a DM massage for me,so I can reach directly to you! hope you stay safe.
Thank you for created this video. Have had a passion for flying like you have. Been trying to finally make the leap and start up some lessons. I am probably a couple of months out, but I am going to make it happen. This is inspiring. Thank You!
So awesome. Don't give up on the dream!!
That was a great video. Thanks for sharing that story and the the details of your purchase experience.
Sure thing! Glad you enjoyed.
Awesome story and very inspiring!:)
Great video and good info! Hopefully that can help me in the near future as I’m planning on starting my training soon and hopefully purchasing an airplane in the not too distant future!
I love your video. I have had a similar experience, in flying & would like to own a plane also. Stopped flying in 2008.
Great video..I'm inspired
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed.
Really great video that will ring so true with many many pilots including myself !
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Love this! Awesome story! 👍🏻👌🏻
Glad to learn that I'm not the only one who has a PPL and can't afford to fly because of college.
Thank you for making this. It's very motivating for us.
Great story!!
Fantastic! Paramotor is on my bucket list. Sounds like you're going to have an absolute blast.
1975!
Great story 🍾
Dood we the same age! I've always been interested in flying more than driving. Always been more interested in planes more than cars.
I need to go quite a bit cheaper to start with but I can't wait.
I don't know if you've ever considered an airpark, but if you do, check out Aero Country in Mckinney, TX.
OUTSTANDING!!!
Thank you!
Great deal on that aircraft. The plane went up in value.
That's awesome! Best of luck and keep us posted!
@@AirplaneAcademy Happy to report both ME and SE comm check rides passed. Off to CFI training.
The brain short out had me cracking up! 😂😂😂😂
@@AirplaneAcademy Absolutely, thanks so much for the reply. I will give them a call this afternoon.
I have my PPL but rent airplanes. You make me really want to own one.
I didn’t know he is your dad, I enjoyed his tbm930 videos
Trying to figure out the cheapest path to get a pilot license. Prices have skyrocketed the past few years appreciate if you found do a video on that topic
Absolutely beautiful story. I’m in with Marloncito. Write the book:)
Beautiful video
Thank you!
The more money I make, the more inflation and interest increases and the price of airplanes keep going higher and higher. If I rent it intereferes with saving for an airplane of my own. Been flying over 23 years and still on the outside of the fence looking in.
Awesome video
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed.
Very cool. Keep us posted. Also, THANK YOU for your service!
@@AirplaneAcademy Will do. Won't buy until January (so I don't have to worry about taxes until 15 months later). Should be fun.
Great video!
Something is fundamentally wrong with aviation though, 100k for an ancient airplane... ouch :)
Still totally worth it.
Very nice story, how many hours on it when you purchased ??
single thousands
@@AirplaneAcademy ok thanks
Damn i wish i could meet you! I am as crazy about aviation as you are but yet flying oportunities is few and far between doesnt matter what can take me up i jump at every oportunity jiro, microlight, cessna, iwould even go up with a kite
I too own a '75 182. Nice airplanes.
I'm upgrading to a twin, so if anyone is looking for a 182, mine is gonna be for sale soon.
He's right though, they are awesome airplanes.
is it for sale yet?
@@chocolatcolumbo9484 I sold it. 165K. 1975 182 P 3700 hrs, 800 hrs on the engines
@@chocolatcolumbo9484 It was on the market for 4 days when sold
Sadly thx to Covid this is not a good idea today. 5 years ago you could buy a great aircraft for $50K or less. Today it's hard to find the same plane for $150K and most are junkers at TBO or in original condition that need an additional $50K in upgrades to get it truly airworthy with a decent cockpit upgrade.
I wish I could get my wife on board. It takes 3 1/2 to 4 hours to go check on her dad and my family but I could fly it in no time. We could also be at the OBX in no time. But she has no interest in flying
How long did it take to save up
I've been trying to get back in the air for 12 years. Medical is holding me back. It's tough to be young and not be considered fit to fly.
I'm really sorry. Have you considered light sport? Less stringent medical. Hope you are able to return soon.
@@AirplaneAcademy I have but it's just not the same for me. I'm just going to keep trying, however long it takes.
How many hours did you have when you bought the 182? How many in a 182?
I think I had around 200 hours, about 30 of which were in a 182, 120 were in a 172, and 50 were in a super cub. Give or take.
How where you able to manage working while training? Do you think 35 years old is to late to earn a private license
@@AirplaneAcademy Thank You very much for the motivation.
What model of 182 is it?
I guess I didn't mention that in the video, huh? Oops. It's a 1975 P model.
Hey man how can I contact you directly. My name is Dustin and I’m almost done with my private at Grand Prairie airport. I love your videos btw.
This sounds like a aviation make swish story 👍
Hey Budd
I’m sold lol
I’m looking for a 182
Lol
Thnx
Hey Charlie, I really enjoyed this video!
I was wondering if you saw my comment on your last video, I really wanted to enter the competition, and share my story with you, but I still don’t know if the contest is available only in the states or worldwide, since I’m not in the states, but I really really want to enter the contest. I really want to realize my dream, and I would love the opportunity! Please let me know if its open for everyone in the world, and not just in the states!
Thank you 😊
Hi there - the first 3 discovery flights will be for US-based applicants, as the form suggests, however I would still encourage you to apply.
That's the only one I have personally used.
geez, you'd be lucky to find a mediocre 172 for 93k now...
Love your videos! Too late to spell "hangar" correctly, though? I insist!
Ah crap. Oversight.
Hold up, u couldn't fly due to finances but ur dad owned a plane? I'm so confused
