  • Puppy's coat change can be a difficult stage for grooming, this video Mel and Sunni explain puppy coat change , why it happens and how to manage their coat through this time. Keeping up the grooming maintenance during coat change is super important . If your puppy's coat is not brushed regularly during the coat change the coat can matt and knot up easily and quickly.

      I am not sure, if your pup is going bald in places I would definitely speak with your vet.

      @@MelanieNewmanSalonEssentials ye did so, they mentioned demodax mites which is common in staffys and I was given a 3 in 1 tablet for wormin/fleein and that probably
      Could be seasonal alopecia as staffys can get or the fact staffs r short fur so it’s quite easy for the fur to fall out etc
      the bald areas are in the ear area which the breeders mentioned that the siblings have lil play fights which could be the reason but that was 3 weeks ago when I got him?

      That’s so great, sound like you are getting on top of it💓 it may take a little bit of time for the hair to grow back.

    We have an 8 month old Cavapoo and whe have not had his hair cut because we love his look and love it long. We do get him groomed but don’t allow them to cut his hair. Is that okay? Our groomer keeps telling us we need to cut it eventually but we’d rather not. He’s so beautiful!!!

    • @MelanieNewmanSalonEssentials

      Hi Drea, thanks for your note. If you maintain the coat well with regular bathing and brushing You may not need to cut your beautiful boys hair. If it does grow to long you can get a longer length trim using attachment combs or you could get a scissor cut only taking the ends off. You may change your mind once your beautiful boy goes though coat change and the coat may thicken up

    Do you recommend ear plucking for bichons? I have a 6 month old puppy who just had his ears plucked (apparently a lot of hair came out)and it ended up with a trip to the vet for antibiotics and pain killers. Is this highly unusual? The groomer said plucking is not a big deal so I went ahead with it.

      I don’t pluck my bichons ear hair, I just make sure the hair it trimmed and that no knots have formed in the outer ear canal. If performed incorrectly ear plucking can be very painful and may cause inflammation and infections to the inner ear. I will only allow my vet to pluck the hair as then my vet will be able to look down the ear canal to make sure there is no redness or irritation. Ear hair is important it helps protect the ear canal.💕

    I have been told not to cut a puppy's coat before 6 months old. Which I have done :( I have a Maltese Shihtzu puppy. Is it true that one is not to cut the puppy's coat until after 6 months?

    • @MelanieNewmanSalonEssentials
      @MelanieNewmanSalonEssentials  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Grooming a puppy is so important before 6 months old. It’s conditions the dog to the grooming process. It makes no difference to the coat if you cut before 6 months or after 6 months. I would recommend grooming and cutting puppies coat before 6 months, does not mean you have to cut short, the hair can still be cut long. 💕

    Hi Melanie. My Cavoodle puppy is 5 months old and her silky soft coat has become quite dry within a week. She's forming little mats (mostly on her hind end) all of the time which come away easily when I brush her. I'm having to brush her at least twice a day and her coat is looking quite thin. I'm wondering if this is her losing her puppy coat or something I should get checked by our vet?

    • @MelanieNewmanSalonEssentials
      @MelanieNewmanSalonEssentials  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like her puppy coat, they can knot and matt really easily when they go through coat change. If her skin is irritated I would get her checked by her Veterinarian or if her adult coat does not begin to grow through. Adult coat will normally begin to grow in at the base on their tail and then through their body.

      @@MelanieNewmanSalonEssentials Thank you for your very quick reply and help. Doesn't appear to be any skin irritation and I can't see any sign of her adult coat yet. I'll keep a close eye on her and will get her checked by her vet anway.
