Bought an R90S back in the mid 70's. Fitted with Krauser bags and small rack for strapping a duffle. Put lots of miles on long trips and it purred along. That got me hooked on sport touring. The cafe fairing caused the front end to lift going 100mph+ so don't assume the new model does anything good for aerodynamics. It might keep some wind and rain off, but not much. After 60+ years of riding, Beemer are still my choice. Yeah, expensive but for rideability, durability, reliability, easy to work on boxer engine, you can ride these for 400,000 miles if you maintain it.
One area I would criticise is the gap between the headstock and the petrol tank. A longer forward extended tank, slimmed down in the front to allow for the forks full swing, would be an improvement. Minor criticism only. Beautiful bike.
Here was my dilemma. I was in the US Army, in Korea, in 1975. I saved my pathetic $200 per month paycheck (minus $50 for spending each month) to buy a motorcycle when I got back to the states (13 month tour back then). Here were the prices. Harley FXE - $2995. BMW R90S - $3995 and Kawasaki KZ900 - $1900. Guess which one I bought? Yep, just like this new R12S, the price will make or break the model. It will be too expensive for most riders to buy, just like in 1975.... Starting at $22,000 is way out of most youth's pocket change range. Unless they live with mom and dad in their basement!!!!
My brother-in-law was in Korea near the same time (back to back tours), CW4 Berlinsky, AH-64 pilot with 1-227th Regiment of the 1st Cavalry, "Flying Fighters"... He went for the BMW himself but this particular interest did not live long.
@@gordoeinstein I was with the Army Security Agency (ASA) at Camp Humphreys and the 329th at Camp Page, which became the 332nd ASA when I was there for my 2nd tour. Then, I was with the 2nd ID on my 3rd tour. I was there as an E2 to a E6, then I got out at 10 years, in 1983 (married life and unaccompanied tours of 1 year were not for me). 1973 to 1983. I intercepted Korean Language and Analyzed Chinese Communications while in Korea (98C and 98G). As an E2/E3, you did not get paid much back then so the cheaper Kawi was in my price range....
@@alzinifelshoni2602 Hopefully, they feed you too or maybe you will come up short on the insurance and DMV fees that go along with that $22,000 initial cost. A little fake plastic Christmas tree will do fine in that basement... Take care and thanks for the laugh.
One of the first BMW's I ever rode was a new R90S. Friend still has it. My first BMW I owned was an R100RS. Like to have an R9T version of it. I've had 26 BMW's so some more twins were in the stable. I have an Urban GS now along with others. I've seen prototype shots of a couple designs for a new version. All good guys from east Kentucky USA
Whilst these bikes are pretty pricey when new, I picked up an ex-demo welded tank 2019 RnineT Sport, UK dealer spec. and tricked it out with some upgrades, Kineos, Ohlins, full Akra Ti pipes, Brembo M4's, floating discs, RCS m/c, and Gilles rear sets for reasonable cost, and I couldn't be happier.
Oh, what a beauty! Stirs up the same emotions in me as my Diablo Red 2016 Thruxton R with its Club Racer Fairing. I know I have space for it beside the Triumph and am tempted to reserve one at the local dealer.
I had an R90S back in the mid-70's, and liked it's look, but hated it's crummy performance. It was in my quiver for only 6 weeks, as I sold it for what I paid for it and bought my Moto Guzzi 850 LeMans MkII. The Guzzi was a much superior bike, as it handled a lot better, with a lot more stability as the BMW would wander and weave at 100mph. The Guzzi was also 20 mph faster on the top end. This one looks great, and as it's built on an excellent chassis, so I would expect it to perform very well. I look forward to checking out the road tests that are inevitably soon coming from Euro journalists. The price is of no consequence, as BMW's are luxury items, not intended for average riders. I see this bike as one of several in a motorcyclist's garage, not a daily rider to commute upon. BMW is finally learning some of the lessons Ducati has been teaching the motorcycle industry for years : how to make a profit by building superb bikes. Harley has proven that it has no clue at all, and will soon will become just another nearly forgotten memory, likely turning into just a provider of low quality, logoed cheap fashionwear.
My current bike is a R1200 R which has the same engine as this bike. It's a FANTASTIC engine with tons of character. No, it's not a sport bike. But it's such a great power plant.
The basic R Nine T is around $16,300, so if you add all the extras included with this bike, including all the 719 option parts, to the Nine T, the price would be about the same. Also, apparently they were out of Detroit Lions caps when you bought that Eagles cap. You'd be able to correctly pronounce 'orange' if you were wearing one!
I rode the original R90S. It had two big side panniers like the RT. It was more like the modern sport tourers, very useable every day and very fast for its time. Great motorbike but not a caféracer.
Beautiful bike, I will hold to see if they produce the R20 which is my first choice. Sold my 2015 GS I'm ready for something new unapologetic, bold and anti woke. Please give us this R20
I had 2 Air-oil Boxer, a cafe, and an R9T-719...I frankly got sick of the Agricultural sound and feel of the Air-oil engine. And when you need work on these Dry-Clutch Transmissions You literally half to break the bike in half to get to the clutch. Nice Torquey engine, but it gets old pretty fast.
...For us real old guys I would like to suggest a retro R 5, please. Modern slight upgrades, but still that gorgeous R 5. Not to pricey, just a beautiful re-production, respectfully ordinarychuck hotmail... Blessings...
Wow , looks amazing, But 20+ k is a lot of money, would buy you a very nice car, or deposit on a home, no wonder the motorcycle industry is in trouble,
Wow, love it. Well done BMW for giving us a modern classic.

Absolutelt stunning. IMHO, i think this might be the most beautiful motorcycle currently made.

@@Gregorio-d3q Oh..and a fuel gage please!😆
One of the best handling bike I have ever driven was a BMW R 100 S.
They really nailed it with this one. Nothing looks out of place. There are so many "retro" bikes now, but this one is spot on.
Really nice looking bike. BMW rocks that retro look!
Very glad the R90s is back! It was modern tech in its time and so is this one. BMW got it right again, includine the Daytona orange paint
$22k and in a year it’ll depreciate to $12k. Nice bike, very nice bike. With the current state of the German economy, BMW may want to re think this.

Gorgeous.
Just drop dead gorgeous.
And practical.
And sporty.
And...not as affordable as I'd like.
Oh well, you can't have everything I guess.
The biggest drawback is the OUTRAGES price tag for this bike! $22,285????
I totally fell in love with the bike until you said the price..
I was gonna say the same exact thing.
At $18K I might buy one.
Not at $21K though!
Same!

Loving retro bikes like this & royal enfields ❤

I still have an almost perfect 82’ R100 CS. Have to say this new model looks very interesting.
Look forward to a ride review
Now we need an r 12 g/s modeled after the r 80 g/s
We want a basic air cooled stripped down 1200 or 1250 with real suspension. Like the h2 back in the day. Well I do any way 😂

This is the bike I want but not in orange
Opposed twin 👍. Beautiful bike ❤
Horizontally Opposed (Boxer) was the term for which you were looking.
Sweet, I think I’ll stick with my 1975 R90S for now. 😁
Badass cycle for sure.
Awesome but too expensive
Wow, Love it! Thanks fella’s
The only retro look for me on the bike is just the paint colour…
cool reminds me of the kawasaki z900rs cafe.
But nowhere near as good.
@@Zed_Solo_RS yea the bmw is nice.
@@Zed_Solo_RS I think i like the z900rs better though.
Good looking scooter 👍🏽
Nice. Now can we have an R12 RS?
Guys: 1975 and it was Daytona Orange…. Thx😉
Horizontally opposed twin
Cool Bike, comes with a pricetag, sure.., but HD is even more expensive
Looks like a caricature in the photos. Hopefully better in the metal. Is it really 20% more than a speed twin? A bit like ‘73…😂

The Incomparable Ainsley Jarvis would have had one of these if he was still alive.

I have a 2000 R1100RT and it is a clunky machine, but a joy to ride. I get a kick out of the way the engine twists.
NGL.....looks sick!
Today BMW design amazing bikes! But... Today BMW design horrible cars!
Kawi z900rs cafe all the way!
Very interested
Absolutely gorgeous! But way out of my price range...
I rather get the motoguzzi v7 corsa
Way down on power, but much more affordable.
R18 style with 1200 engine would be nice...R18 as it is now is too big
The r 12 already exists
I live in a country with a 100% import tax, so starting price for me is $45,000
Just get an XSR900. Everything is cool about Alex except for his love for the Eagles.

If it weren't for the price, I'd be interested. Good looking bike, but way overpriced compared to similar bikes.
Cool!
"Tubeless Spokes"....Do your research
I love the look but it's to much money... I'll will keep my 21' R9T Urban GS.

Too much $$$ for a beautiful paint job
Too bad the bike is so small.
Moto guzzi styl. moto guzzi v7 stone corsa.
I love everything about it except for the sound. I just can't stand it and wish it was a V or L twin.
Instal DNA air filters to add an induction sound, it won’t burble but should sound better
@georgek8545 so then it won't sound farty and has the deep low rumble?
100hp for $23k
funny how the first five comments are fake.
aren't the top ones the most recent ones?
